DESCRIPTION
Achaemenid Persian Cavalryman, 5~4th centuries BCE
This drawing is based on a silver rhyton currently housed in the Erebuni Museum of Turkey. This rhyton is in the shape of a Persian nobleman riding a horse. The man is wearing the typical attire of the Persians of this time. He is wearing an iconic round hat (so-called “Median hat"), which was made famous by the Persepolis reliefs. However, unlike the plain Persepolis example, his hat is decorated with a falcon with its wings unfolded. This falcon is similar to the motif used in the Achaemenid royal standard. The long-sleeved tunic has triangular hem ornaments and a rosette band in the middle. For trousers, he is wearing a checkered anaxyrides. He is armed with an akinakes dagger and a bow.
