As the artist, I guess I should be providing context and properly establishing the situations I put the characters in. But even though I have my own ideas about what's happening, I'd rather leave the interpretation of my illustrations up to you.
(Pro tip: If you're an artist too, DON'T do what I do X.x. Most people actually prefer it when artists create their own little universe instead of leaving everything up to interpretation. )
