I was thinking of revisiting my old Utopia project. Utopia is/was a strategy game for the Amiga 500, SNES and DOS. Think of it as a mix of Sim City and tower defense (but very slow paced). Part of the appeal of the game is just seeing the little buildings and tanks, and finding out what will attack you (a neighboring alien colony). It's very different from modern RTS games which are mostly competitive. Perhaps it's closer to RimWorld in feel.
Back in 2006 this project sidetracked onto my usual underpants weirdness path, I started a comic, and then the project fizzled out. I don't know what to do with it now. I used to dump that stuff on DeviantArt but that place has turned undead. Anyways, I just retouched one of the old pieces, but more because I kinda like the tentacle-bike. I also designed a lot of variant units for some reason. My art then was done with a hard crisp black brush of some sort, with shade and colours in separate layers. Despite the crispness of the lines the details are a bit nebulous and in need of iteration.
I'm perhaps more tempted to play around with the sprites though. A lot of Amiga games were 16 colours because they were also for the Atari ST, but Utopia actually used 32 game-global colours iirc. The palette is decent aside from some strange skips in the blue ramp. I wonder what it would look with some tweaks...
