Chapter 1: The Blood on the Border

Sinnoh Region

The Sinnoh League’s promotional pamphlets always showed the Great Marsh as a sun-drenched sanctuary. They featured smiling tourists boardwalk-strolling over the sparkling waters, throwing treats to docile Wooper and watching pristine flocks of Staravia drift lazily across a sapphire sky.

They didn't show the rot. They didn't show the quick-mud that could swallow a grown man in ninety seconds, or the swarms of wild Yanmega whose wings vibrated at a frequency capable of liquefying human eardrums. And they damn sure didn't show the predators that hunted in the deep, unmapped miasma where the sanctuary fences ended and the lawless black zones began.

Naruto Uzumaki crouched on a decaying mangrove root, his boots submerged an inch into the black, sulfurous sludge. The air was a thick, humid soup that smelled of stagnant water and old death.

"Movement at two o'clock," Naruto whispered, his voice low and gravelly, barely carrying over the ambient drone of the marsh insects.

Beside him, blending seamlessly into the twisted, moss-draped roots, Lucario shifted his weight. This wasn't the regal, blue-and-black creature found on elite League stages. This was a wild-born brawler. His left ear was jaggedly split down the middle, his steel chest-spike was blunt and cross-hatched with deep scratches from territorial territorial disputes, and his coarse blue fur was caked in dried swamp clay to mask his scent.

Lucario didn't drop into a meditative stance to read the world. He dropped his snout, his black aura-appendages flaring outward like sensory antennae, tasting the air for the unique, chemical trace of violent intent.

'Three of them,' Lucario’s telepathic pulse grated against Naruto’s mind, rough, non-verbal, a direct transmission of raw instinct, heavy with the concept of poison-fangs and submerged ambush. 'Drapion. Feral. They’ve been tracking the scent of the bog-oil on your coat for the last half-mile.'

"Let 'em come," Naruto muttered. He reached into his heavy, weather-beaten canvas coat, pulling out a pair of thick leather wraps. He began winding them tightly around his forearms, securing the skin. "We need those venom sacs if we’re going to pay off the mechanic in Pastoria for the new alternator on the rig. The League keeps the price of antidote ingredients artificially high, which means the black-market brokers are paying premium coin this week."

He didn't carry a belt of standard-issue Pokéballs. In the black zones, relying on a digital capture device to tame a feral beast was a good way to get your arm bitten off before you could press the release button. True bonds out here weren't forged in a red-and-white plastic capsule; they were hammered out in blood, shared rations, and mutual survival.

A sudden, unnatural stillness fell over the immediate section of the swamp. The ambient hum of the bug-types vanished.

The surface of the black water five yards away rippled. Then, with a sickening, wet explosion, a massive, violet-scaled horror erupted from the mire.

It was a wild Drapion, but it lacked the glossy sheen of a captured specimen. This beast was easily seven feet of armored malice, its body covered in jagged, irregular spikes, its massive front claws snapping with enough hydraulic pressure to shear a human torso in half. Its eyes were milky, filmed over with cataracts from a lifetime spent in the dark muck, but its multi-segmented tail whipped through the air with terrifying, lethal precision, the stinger at the tip dripping a viscous, pale-green neurotoxin.

Before the first Drapion could fully clear the water, two more broke the surface to the left and right, effectively boxing Naruto and Lucario against the trunk of a massive, ancient mangrove tree.

A standard trainer would have panicked, fumbling at their belt, shouting standardized commands from a safe distance behind a protective barrier.

Naruto didn't move an inch backward. He didn't have Chakra, this world's physics didn't recognize the spiritual energy pathways of his memories, but his soul had stubborn violently adapted to his new flesh. It had taken the latent, biological life-force inherent in every living cell and weaponized it into something monstrous.

When Naruto inhaled, his pupils didn't just constrict; they dissolved into a brilliant, molten gold. Wisps of heavy, sapphire-blue light began to bleed off his skin, rising like hot steam in the damp swamp air.

The central Drapion roared, a harsh, metallic clicking sound, and lunged forward, its massive claws spread wide for a Cross Poison strike that would render Naruto down to bait.

"Lucario, take the right one! Keep it busy!" Naruto barked.

Instead of retreating, Naruto vaulted off the slippery mangrove root, throwing himself directly into the path of the central apex predator.

The Drapion’s right claw came down like a guillotine. Naruto didn't dodge. He slammed his left arm upward, his golden eyes flashing with sudden, violent intent. "Shield!"

A solid, crystalline plate of blue aura erupted from his forearm wraps, forming a barrier six inches thick and wide enough to cover his torso. The Drapion’s claw slammed into the sapphire glass with a deafening CRACK. The sheer kinetic force forced Naruto’s boots six inches deep into the swamp mud, the shockwave rippling across the water and shattering nearby reeds, but the barrier held. The biological density of his life-force was so concentrated it felt like striking solid titanium.

Through the translucent blue energy, Naruto grinned, a feral, teeth-bared expression that mirrored his partner's aggression.

"My turn," he grunted.

He dropped the shield, his right hand flashing forward to grip the Drapion’s heavy, armored snout. He didn't just hold it; he drove his fingers into the soft tissue beneath the violet plating.

Aura Burst.

Naruto didn't project the energy outward this time. He kept it internal, forcing a massive surge of raw biological power directly through his own muscle fibers. His bicep visibly strained against his heavy canvas sleeve, the fabric tearing slightly as his arm expanded from the sheer volume of blood and energy pumping through it. With a guttural shout, Naruto utilized the pure, augmented physical strength to lift the seven-hundred-pound Drapion clean out of the mud and hurl it violently into the second scorpion-type rushing him from the left.

The two massive Pokémon collided in a chaotic tangle of heavy armor, snapping claws, and screeching wood as they smashed into a dense cluster of roots.

To his right, Lucario was already a blur of blue and gold. He didn't wait for directional commands; his bond with Naruto was rooted in a shared tactical consciousness. The jackal Pokémon caught the third Drapion mid-lunge, his paws glowing with the unstable, white-hot light of Extreme Speed.

Thud. Thud. CRACK.

Lucario’s palm strikes hit with the cadence of an automatic rifle, targeting the soft joints between the Drapion's armored segments. Each strike left a smoking, singed mark where his own aura detonated against the beast’s hide. The wild Drapion hissed in agony, its massive tail whipping around in a desperate counter-attack, the poison-stinger aiming directly for Lucario’s throat.

"Lucario, dodge!" Naruto yelled, already sprinting across the muddy expanse, his gold eyes blazing as he trailed blue sparks from his heels.

Lucario dropped low, letting the stinger slice through the empty air where his ears had been a split second prior, and extended his left paw backward without looking.

Naruto slid through the mud, his hand slamming firmly against Lucario’s extended palm.

The moment flesh met fur, Naruto’s massive biological reservoir flooded the connection. It wasn't a gentle, harmonious synchronization; it was an aggressive, adrenaline-fueled injection of raw power. Lucario’s crimson eyes blew out, the golden rings around his irises flaring to life. The black aura-sensors on his head stood completely rigid, crackling with static electricity.

"Bone Rush. Take the legs," Naruto commanded.

A massive, dual-ended staff of solid, blinding yellow energy materialized in Lucario’s grip. With his physically augmented strength tripled by Naruto’s direct injection, Lucario spun the energy weapon with terrifying velocity.

CRACK. CRACK. CRACK.

The staff struck the third Drapion's multi-segmented legs with bone-shattering force. The massive scorpion collapsed into the muck, its mobility completely neutralized, its heavy armor cracked and oozing dark fluid.

The first two Drapion were untangling themselves, their primitive minds finally registering that the two bipeds in front of them weren't prey, they were an entirely different tier of monster. They let out low, defensive clicks, backing away slowly into the deeper water, their stingers raised defensively.

Naruto stood in the center of the clearing, his chest heaving, the golden light slowly receding from his eyes back to their natural sky-blue. He wiped a mixture of black swamp water and sweat from his forehead, looking down at the crippled Drapion struggling in the mud.

"Good lookin' out, pal," Naruto panted, unhooking a long, specialized surgical syringe and a heavy glass vial from his tactical utility belt. "Let's harvest the venom quickly. The smell of this much spilled blood is going to draw the local Carnivine pack within ten minutes, and I don't feel like burning through another half-day of energy fighting off a bunch of overgrown pest."

Lucario stood guard, the energy staff dissipating into blue mist, his breath coming in short, efficient gasps as his muscles settled back to their standard density. His crimson eyes scanned the dark tree line, his primitive instinct still entirely tuned to the harsh reality of the border.

They were alive. They were paid. And out here, that was the only thing that mattered.

The boundary line between the Pastoria City limits and the unincorporated wastes wasn't marked by a wall. It was marked by a smell. On the northern side lay the pristine, chlorinated drainage systems of the League’s coastal bastion. On the southern side sat "The Shallows", a sprawling, lawless shantytown built on stilts over the brackish flats where the marsh met the sea.

Here, the air tasted of salt, diesel exhaust, and cheap illicit tobacco.

Naruto guided his heavily modified, matte-black overland rig through the rutted mud tracks of the settlement. The truck was a beast of necessity: reinforced steel plating welded over the wheel wells, high-clearance suspension caked in dried clay, and a heavy-duty winch mounted to the front bumper. Inside the cab, a customized ten-inch touchscreen monitor hummed on the dash, flickering with local radar data and untraceable radio frequencies, while a three-channel dash camera silently recorded the suspicious movements of the heavily armed locals loitering outside the scrap-metal drinking dens.

In the passenger seat, Lucario sat perfectly still, his eyes closed, his aura-sensing appendages pressed flat against his skull to muffle the chaotic, noisy sea of human malice and desperation surrounding them.

"Almost there, pal," Naruto said, shifting the truck into a lower gear as they crawled past a group of men skinning a wild Seaking on an open wooden dock. "We get the cash from Valerie, drop off the venom, grab the new alternator, and we’re back to the high country before the evening patrol boats leave the harbor."

He parked the rig behind a weather-beaten warehouse with a rusted iron roof that bore the faded emblem of an old logistics company. It was now the headquarters of the most reliable contraband fence on the southern coast.

Naruto cut the engine, grabbed the heavy glass vial of Drapion venom from the floorboard console, and stepped out into the humid sea breeze. Lucario moved smoothly beside him, his boots clicking softly against the rotting timber boardwalk.

The heavy iron door of the warehouse creaked open before Naruto could knock.

"You're late, Uzumaki," a sharp, feminine voice called out from the dim interior.

Valerie stood in the doorway, leaning against the frame with a practiced, lethal casualness. She was a striking woman in her early thirties, a former elite League Ranger who had been dishonorably discharged and blacklisted after refusing an order to torch an indigenous village in the northern zones. She wore a faded olive-drab tactical vest over a tight black tank top, her dark hair pulled back into a messy bun, and a jagged scar cutting through her left eyebrow down to her cheekbone. At her hip rested a heavy-caliber revolver, and lounging on a stack of cargo crates behind her was her partner, a massive, scarred Floatzel whose flotation collar was covered in dark burn marks from some long-forgotten skirmish.

"Ran into a family reunion in the deep muck," Naruto replied, tossing the vial of thick, glowing green venom through the air.

Valerie caught it effortlessly in one gloved hand. She held it up to the dim light of a hanging oil lantern, swirling the viscous fluid with a critical eye. A slow, appreciative whistle escaped her lips.

"Pure, unrefined Alpha-grade neurotoxin," Valerie murmured, her sharp eyes flashing as she set the vial down on a metal workbench. "And you didn't even use a dampening field to preserve it. How many did you have to put down to get a yield this clean?"

"Three," Naruto said, leaning his hip against the workbench, his hand resting casually near his utility belt. "They were hungry. We had a disagreement about who was at the top of the food chain."

Valerie let out a dry, throat-deep laugh. She stepped closer, her analytical gaze sweeping over Naruto’s torn canvas sleeves and the faint, lingering smell radiating from his skin. She reached into her vest pocket, pulling out a thick, grease-stained envelope packed with unregulated regional script, the untraceable paper currency used by the border folk.

"The Pastoria pharmacy syndicate is going to pay me double for this," she said, tapping the envelope against his chest before handing it over. "The League just passed a new mandate. All antidote manufacturing is being centralized in Hearthome City. They’re chipping the price up by forty percent. Out here, a regular fisherman gets bit by a wild Tentacruel, he either buys black-market venom to cook his own cure, or he loses the leg."

"The League loves their monopolies," Naruto muttered, stuffing the cash into his coat pocket. "They call us outlaws, but they’re the ones bleeding the frontier dry."

Valerie’s expression softened slightly, her gray eyes narrowing as she looked past Naruto toward Lucario, who was quietly monitoring the perimeter from the edge of the loading dock.

"Speaking of monopolies," Valerie said, her voice dropping to a cautious whisper. "The Silph Corporation just rolled out their new 'Mark-V' tracking registry in the city. The Rangers are setting up checkpoints along the main roads out of Pastoria. They aren't just checking licenses anymore, Naruto. They’re running bio-scans on every fighting-type within fifty miles."

Naruto’s jaw tightened. "Let 'em scan."

"They'll find a ghost," Valerie countered sharply, taking a step into his personal space, her tone heavy with genuine concern. "Your Lucario doesn't have a digital signature. No ID chip in his shoulder, no capture log in the League mainframe. If the central computer catches a blank reading from a creature with that kind of muscle density, they don't fine you. They deploy a containment squad. They’ll treat him like a wild threat and treat you like a poacher."

"He's not a pet, and he's not League property," Naruto said, his blue eyes flashing with a cold, stubborn fire that made Valerie instinctively take a half-step back. "We bleed together. We eat together. If some desk-jockey in a uniform wants to try and put a compliance collar on my partner, they better bring more than a badge."

Valerie stared at him for a long moment, witnessing the sheer, unyielding weight of his presence. It was the same quality that made him a legend among the border-runners, a man who lived entirely outside the system, not out of malice, but out of a fierce, feral commitment to absolute freedom.

"You're a stubborn bastard, Uzumaki," she sighed, shaking her head as she walked back toward her desk. She reached underneath the counter and pulled out a heavy, grease-covered iron component, the replacement high-output alternator Naruto had ordered three weeks ago. "Here’s your part. It’s military surplus from the old Canalave defense lines. It'll keep that rig of yours humming even if you submerge the engine block in a swamp."

"Appreciate it, Val," Naruto said, lifting the heavy iron component with one hand, his reinforced aura subtly easing the mechanical strain on his wrist.

"Don't thank me yet," Valerie warned, her face turning grim as she looked out the window toward the gray, misty horizon of Mt. Coronet. "There's a rumor coming down from the archaeological sector. The high-ups in Celestic Town are hiring private muscle. Something big was discovered in the old northern ruin networks, and the League is clearing out every independent handler within twenty leagues to keep it quiet. Watch your back up there. The air is getting thin."

Naruto slung the alternator over his shoulder, a cold, confident smirk playing at the corner of his mouth.

"Let 'em clear it," Naruto said, turning back toward the door. "The mountains are big enough to bury a lot of uniforms."

As he stepped out into the humid air of The Shallows, Lucario fell smoothly into lockstep beside him. The money was in his pocket, the truck parts were secured, but the wind coming off the northern ridges tasted different today. It tasted like a storm was brewing, one that wouldn't just bring snow, but the kind of heavy, oppressive authority he had spent his entire second life running from.

The coastal humidity of the marshlands died a violent death the moment the overland rig cleared the lower foothills of the mountain range. Up here, the air was thin, biting, and choked with the gray, slate-colored dust of ancient granite. The winding dirt track, an old logging route abandoned by the League after the local forest-types slaughtered the construction crews twenty years ago, was the only way to bypass the official highway checkpoints leading into the heart of Sinnoh.

Naruto threw the rig into third gear, his calloused hands firm on the steering wheel as the massive tires bit into the loose scree. The heavy iron alternator he’d bought from Valerie sat in a wooden crate in the back, shifting with a dull, rhythmic thud against the truck bed every time they hit a rut.

Beside him, Lucario’s notched ear suddenly twitched. His crimson eyes snapped open, fixed instantly on the dark, vertical shadow of a gorge half a mile ahead.

'They’re waiting,' Lucario’s mental pulse was jagged, laced with the metallic taste of adrenaline. 'Not wild beasts. Machines. The smell of cold grease and static electricity. Three human signatures, four Pokémon.'

Naruto didn't slow down. He reached over with his right hand, flipping a toggle switch beneath the custom ten-inch dash monitor. The radar screen flickered, a red perimeter line sweeping across the local topography before locking onto three distinct heat signatures positioned right at the narrowest bottleneck of the gorge.

"Rogue rangers or syndicate bounty hunters?" Naruto muttered, his blue eyes darkening. "Valerie said they were clearing the independent handlers out of the sector. Looks like we made the list."

"Lucario," Naruto said, his voice dropping into a flat, deadly register. "Check the harness. If they want to play asset-seizure, we show them how much it costs to collect."

Lucario reached across his chest, ensuring the heavy-duty leather buckles of his tactical harness were locked down. He didn't look afraid; he looked hungry. In the wild zones, a confrontation with humans wasn't a sporting match with a referee and a medical tent waiting at the sidelines. It was an execution unless you broke the other side first.

The truck rounded the final bend of the gorge, and the trap snapped shut.

Two heavy, armored industrial transports, painted a drab, unregistered gray, were parked completely nose-to-tail across the single-lane track, creating an impenetrable steel barricade. Standing in front of the vehicles were three men clad in reinforced canvas tactical vests, their faces obscured by ballistic smoke-masks. These weren't League officials in clean blue uniforms. These were sector mercenaries, licensed bounty hunters who operated in the gray space where the League wanted dirty work done without their branding on the paperwork.

The central mercenary, a massive man with a heavy scar burning through the exposed skin of his thick neck, raised a high-output flare gun, firing a brilliant crimson streak directly into the air above Naruto’s hood.

Naruto slammed on the brakes. The heavy overland rig skidded to a halt, the tires throwing up a massive cloud of gray dust that choked the narrow canyon walls.

"Out of the vehicle! Hands on the dash!" the lead mercenary roared through a megaphone, his voice echoing off the sheer rock faces. "By authority of the Sinnoh Regional Wildlife Command, this vehicle and all un-chipped biological biological entities within are subject to immediate seizure and quarantine! Comply or face lethal deterrence!"

Behind the three men, the rear doors of the transport trucks hissed open. Stepping out into the cold mountain air were their enforcers.

Two Aggron, colossal, bipedal mountains of gray iron and jagged steel plates, slammed their massive claws into the earth, the impact causing the gravel beneath Naruto’s tires to vibrate. Beside them stood a Magmortar, its arm-cannons already glowing with a low, churning orange heat that caused the surrounding alpine air to shimmer with volatile thermal distortion.

"Two steel-types, a heavy fire-type," Naruto analyzed coolly, his gaze sweeping over the deployment. "They brought the heavy hardware just for a lone handler."

'They don't want you,' Lucario pointed out, his lips curling back to expose long, white fangs as he stared at the Magmortar. 'They smelled my muscle density. A wild-born, unregistered Lucario with an active aura core fetches fifty thousand credits on the Hearthome black market. They think we’re an easy paycheck.'

"They think wrong," Naruto said.

He pushed the truck door open, stepping down into the cold mountain wind. He didn't reach for a Pokéball belt. He didn't lower his head. He stood in the open space between his rig and the mercenaries, his heavy coat flaring behind him like a dark sail. Lucario dropped down from the passenger side, matching his position, his scarred ears pinned back, his black aura appendages floating horizontally on the breeze.

The lead mercenary looked at Naruto, then down at the lack of standard League equipment on his belt. A dry, muffled chuckle escaped his smoke-mask.

"A ghost handler," the mercenary sneered, gesturing toward the Aggron. "You’ve got five seconds to step away from the jackal, kid. The League pays a premium for clean specimens, but the contract doesn't say anything about keeping the driver in one piece."

"I’m going to give you one chance," Naruto said, his voice quiet, completely stripped of emotion. It was the voice of a man who had already died once and didn't find the concept of mortality particularly intimidating. "Move the trucks. I’ve had a long day in the swamp, my knuckles hurt, and I’m out of patience."

The mercenaries didn't bother replying. The leader simply dropped his hand in a sharp cutting motion.

"Magmortar, Flamethrower. Burn the tires off the rig. Aggron, Iron Head."

The Magmortar raised its left arm-cannon, the internal chamber roaring as a massive, swirling torrent of liquid fire exploded outward. The canyon vanished behind a wall of blinding white-orange heat, the temperature skyrocketing instantly as the flora along the cliffside withered and turned to ash. Simultaneously, the lead Aggron lunged forward, its iron-plated skull gleaming with a heavy, metallic energy that threatened to pulverize anything in its path.

Naruto didn't flinch. He took a single, deep breath, reaching deep into the absolute core of his biology.

He didn't have the coiled chakra networks of his past life, but his soul was a stubborn, violent thing. It had carved a new path through his flesh, transforming every red blood cell, every muscle fiber, and every nerve ending into a localized generator for raw, unrefined life-force.

Aura.

When Naruto’s eyes snapped open, the sky-blue irises were gone. They burned with a brilliant, molten gold that cut through the smoke and heat of the oncoming flames. Wisps of heavy, sapphire-blue energy erupted from his pores, rising like hot steam around his shoulders.

He jammed his boots into the stone, throwing both hands forward, palms flat against the oncoming inferno. "Repel!"

A solid, crystalline dome of blinding blue aura erupted from his body, expanding outward in a split second. The Magmortar’s Flamethrower struck the sapphire barrier and split, the liquid fire washing harmlessly around the sides of the dome, scorching the canyon walls into black slag but leaving Naruto and his rig completely untouched.

Before the mercenaries could even register that a human had just absorbed a heavy fire-type attack with his bare hands, the lead Aggron slammed its iron skull directly into the front of the dome.

CRACK.

The impact sounded like a structural failure. The sapphire barrier didn't shatter; instead, Naruto absorbed the immense kinetic force through his bones, his gold eyes flaring with sudden, agonizing focus. The skin across his forearms tore open from the internal pressure, bright crimson blood welling up only to be instantly vaporized by the heat of his own rising energy.

"Lucario...NOW!" Naruto roared.

He didn't just command; he acted as the catalyst. Naruto slammed his hand back onto Lucario’s shoulder harness, bypassing the need for spiritual synchronization. He forced a massive, violent injection of his own raw biological life-force directly into the Pokémon’s nervous system.

It was a chemical overload. Lucario’s muscles instantly expanded, the coarse blue fur along his spine standing completely rigid as his crimson eyes blew out with a terrifying golden ring around the irises. The air within five yards of them began to crackle with heavy static electricity, the loose gravel lifting off the ground as if gravity had suddenly lost its grip.

"Close Combat...Shatter the line!" Naruto barked.

Lucario didn't just move; he vanished.

The Extreme Speed was so violently augmented by Naruto’s aura injection that it left a localized vacuum in his wake. He appeared directly beneath the lead Aggron's jaw before the twelve-hundred-pound steel-type could even drop its defensive posture.

A brutal, blinding sequence of strikes followed. Lucario’s palms hit with the cadence of an industrial piston, each strike detonating inside the Aggron's iron plating. Naruto’s injected energy didn't just bruise the surface; it bypassed the armor entirely, sending high-frequency shockwaves through the beast’s internal energy reservoirs.

Thud-thud-thud-CRACK.

The colossal Aggron, a creature built to withstand artillery fire, was lifted three feet off the ground by the sheer upward velocity of the strikes before being hurled backward into the second transport truck, its massive iron torso deeply dented, unconscious before it even hit the steel chassis.

"What the hell is that?!" the second mercenary screamed, his hands fumbling wildly at his belt for another Pokéball as he stared at the golden-eyed demon standing in the middle of the road. "He’s boosting it without a Keystone! He’s using raw energy!"

"Magmortar, maximum output! Hyper Beam!" the leader shrieked, the professional composure completely draining from his face as he realized they weren't fighting an outlaw handler, they were fighting a biological anomaly.

The Magmortar locked its twin cannons together, the air between them condensing into an unstable, white-hot sphere of pure destructive power.

Naruto didn't wait for the beam to fire. He sprinted forward, trailing blue sparks from his heels, his golden eyes locked onto the fire-type. The physical strain of holding the previous barrier was tearing at his muscles, his vision swimming with a faint crimson hue from the sheer volume of energy he was forcing through his veins, but he didn't slow down.

"Lucario...Bone Rush!"

A massive, dual-ended staff of solid, blinding yellow energy materialized in Lucario’s grip. With a fierce, animalistic roar, the jackal Pokémon vaulted off Naruto’s shoulder, using the momentum to propel himself high into the air above the canyon gorge.

The Magmortar unleashed the Hyper Beam. The white-hot torrent of energy tore through the center of the path, vaporizing the stones and turning the mud to glass.

Naruto didn't try to block it this time. He dove to the left, his heavy coat absorbing the blistering heat as the beam missed him by inches, the sheer displacement of air tearing his canvas sleeve completely away from his shoulder.

Mid-air, Lucario brought the energy staff down with the force of a falling meteor. "Break!" Naruto commanded from the ground, his gold eyes flaring one last time to push the remaining reserve of his power into the strike.

The bone staff struck the Magmortar squarely across the skull. The explosion of energy was deafening, a shockwave of yellow and blue light ripping outward that shattered the windshields of both mercenary transports and forced the three men to throw themselves onto the ground to avoid the flying shrapnel.

When the dust finally settled, the Magmortar lay face-down in the cratered stone, its cannons smoking, completely neutralized. The remaining Aggron stood frozen, its primitive survival instincts completely overriding its training as it looked at the scarred jackal Pokémon spinning its energy staff with cold, predatory precision.

The three mercenaries lay in the dirt, their smoke-masks cracked, their weapons scattered across the gravel. The leader looked up, his face pale, his breath catching in his throat as a shadow fell over him.

Naruto stood over him. The golden light had faded from his eyes, leaving them a cold, winter sky-blue, but the sheer, oppressive weight of his presence was heavier than any aura projection. His right forearm was covered in shallow, smoking lacerations where his skin had split from the energy density, blood dripping slowly from his fingertips onto the mercenary’s vest.

"You... you're a monster," the leader whispered, his voice trembling as he stared up at the blood-stained outlaw. "The League... they’ll hunt you to the ends of the region for this. You can't run from the grid forever."

Naruto reached down, gripping the mercenary by the collar of his tactical vest and lifting him effortlessly off the ground until their faces were inches apart.

"Tell your handlers in Celestic Town something for me," Naruto whispered, his voice a low, gravelly promise that made the mercenary’s pupils dilate with absolute terror. "The grid ends where the mountain begins. If they want my partner, tell them to stop sending boys to do a monster's job. Next time, I won't just break the tools. I'll break the hand that holds them."

He dropped the man back into the dirt, turning on his heel without another word.

Lucario fell into lockstep beside him, the energy staff dissipating into faint blue mist as they walked back to the rig. Naruto climbed into the driver's seat, his muscles screaming in agony from the biological backlash of the aura override, but his face remained a mask of absolute, unyielding stone.

He threw the truck into reverse, backed up ten yards, and then slammed it into first, gunning the engine. The heavy overland rig surged forward, its massive tires tearing over the hood of the mercenary transport, crushing the steel frame under its weight before clearing the bottleneck and disappearing into the rising, snow-choked ridges of Mt. Coronet.

Behind them, the storm finally hit, the first heavy flakes of winter snow falling over the broken steel and unconscious beasts left in the wake of the Aura Outlaw.
