Bandits of the Utter Islands
DESCRIPTION

If you haven't checked already, I've been updating the NPC section of the SWORDS AGAINST HEAVEN webpage. Here are what the Bandits of the Utter Islands are like.

Bandits

They are the new landlords of the broken world. Their title deed is a loaded gun. They are the world's bad debt. A profit carved from the wound.

Their flag is a tooth in the mud.

Their law is the geometry of a drawn blade.

They see a weeping child and calculate the weight of its ransom in joss-stick ash.

They are not poor. They are speculators of ruin. Their capital is your last breath, bought cheap and sold dear.

Their kingdom is the space between a trigger and its firing. A temporary nation of one.

They do not believe in heaven. Only in the interest compounded on a borrowed life.

They are the world, mended wrong. Another wheel to be shattered.

Synergy

The bandits operate with the desperate coordination of cornered animals. The Crag is their anchor, a living barricade who uses Shield Covenant to intercept attacks meant for his fragile allies. While he holds the line, the Mauler applies overwhelming pressure, forcing enemies to engage him. This chaos is the Blight-Wife's canvas; she uses Tox to bleed her victims dry from a distance. The Gutter-Snipe capitalizes on this, using Longshot to pick off weakened targets, while the Huckster shatters the enemy's will with Ridicule, turning their discipline into doubt. They are a pack: the Crag is the jaws, the Mauler is the claws, the Blight-Wife is the venom, the Gutter-Snipe is the sting, and the Huckster is the panic that makes you run right into the trap.

Threat Level

A full bandit crew is a Challenging to Deadly encounter for a standard 4-player party of Wretches. They lack the refined training of soldiers but make up for it with vicious, adaptable tactics. The combination of the Crag's interception, the Blight-Wife's poison, and the Gutter-Snipe's ranged attacks can overwhelm an unprepared party. The Huckster's ability to inflict Off-Balance can tip a close Clash in their favor.

Weakening the Band

To survive, the party must break the bandits' opportunistic rhythm.

Priority 1: The Huckster. His words are a weapon that weakens your own. Eliminating him removes the debilitating Off-Balance status and protects the party's morale.

Priority 2: The Blight-Wife. Her poison magic can whittle down health with Sap. Taking her out removes their lingering damage and control.

Priority 3: The Gutter-Snipe. She is the bandits' only dedicated ranged threat. Force her to move and engage in melee, where her effectiveness plummets.

The Mauler and Crag are dangerous, but they are close-range brawlers. Kiting them and using terrain to avoid the Crag's interception is key.

Loot

Bandits carry the scrounged, practical gear of survivors-turned-predators. 2-in-6 chance they have one of the following:

Mauler: 25js, Strong Coffee (Drink to gain +2 Speed, -2 Meditation, lose 2 Health).

Crag: 20js, Abaca Fiber Rope (10 hexes long, sturdy).

Blight-Wife: 30js, a Bundle of Joss (equal to 10js).

Gutter-Snipe: 35js, 5 extra Bullets.

Huckster: 30js, a Pack of Joss (equal to 20js).

Mauler

Duty: Vanguard

His body is a debt-collection. A shoulder hewn from firewood. Knuckles like quarry-stone.

He knows the arithmetic of breaking. Counts your ribs with his hammer.

When he smiles, a tooth is a missing headstone.

He invests in pain. Your suffering is his dividend.

Basic Ability: The Fury. A roar that is also a challenge. Clash. Taunt target until their next turn end.

Weapon: Karma-Cleaver. A massive slab of iron scavenged from a collapsed temple bell, its surface still bearing fragments of sacred inscriptions now used to break bones rather than chant prayers (Heavy Melee).

Armor: Sutra-Stitched Hide. Thick hides crudely sewn together with pages torn from holy texts, the sacred syllables providing unexpected resilience against blades (Light Armor).

Crag

Duty: Vanguard

He is the wall the world leans on. His shield is a door taken from a house that burned. The lock still holds.

He does not move. The fight must come to him. A rock in a river of knives.

To pass him is to let the river in.

He is the final argument of a collapsed roof.

Weapon: Rictus-Blade (Light Melee) & Wailing Bulwark (Heavy Melee, Shield). The shield is fashioned from the massive, bronze-faced door of a desecrated monastery, still bearing the dents where worshippers once pounded for entry during a long-ago purge.

Armor: Pilgrim's End Carapace. A mismatched suit of lamellar assembled from the armor of countless failed ascetics and pilgrims who never reached their holy sites, their collective failure creating a bitter, protective energy (Heavy Armor).

Blight-Wife

Duty: Saboteur

She drinks the silence between heartbeats. Her robes are stitched from burial-shrouds. They smell of wet earth and old copper.

She does not curse you. She reminds the world you are already rotting.

The knife in her hand is only to remember what it is to be open.

She is the final creditor, collecting on a debt you never knew you owed.

Weapon: Sorrow-Needle. A long, thin ritual dagger made of fossilized bone, used to pierce the subtle body and release its vital energies (Light Melee).

Armor: Shroud of Unmourned Ghosts. A cloak woven from the burial clothes of the forgotten dead, each thread humming with residual grief that deflects hostile magicks (Mystic Armor).

Gutter-Snipe

Duty: Partisan

Her god is the straight line. She is a stillness at the edge of your vision. A held breath.

The gun is a length of cold pipe. An argument settled in one syllable.

The bullet is not fast. It is that the world has already decided where it belongs.

She is the final audit of your existence.

Weapon: Mandala-Patterned Rifle. A custom long gun whose barrel is wrapped in a spiraling, etched mandala; each shot is a prayer for annihilation, the recoil a mantra against existence (Heavy Ranged, Gun).

Armor: Ash-Smeared Garb. Clothing stained with the soot of burnt temples and libraries, the residue of knowledge lost making her harder for spirits and seers to pinpoint (No Armor).

Huckster

Duty: Saboteur

His truth is a fever he gives you. His coat is too bright. A wound that hasn't closed.

He does not lie. He offers you a simpler, crueler story.

You will give him your coin. Or your attention. Both are a kind of blood.

He is the architect of your doubt.

Weapon: Truth-Razor. A wickedly sharp knife that seems to bend light around it, perfect for cutting purse strings, truths, and throats (Light Melee).

Armor: Cult-Leader's Castoffs. A flamboyant coat that once belonged to the prophet of a now-dead cult, its vibrant colors and tinkling bells designed to draw every eye and distract from the knife in his hand (No Armor).
