ENGLISH/ESPAÑOL
Hello everybunny! The end of the Summer is getting close. We hope you have enjoyed your days despite the heat.Before getting to the post, we want to thank you all for the support we received on the Lizard expansion pack, and say hi to all the new patrons. We hope you enjoy our content and that you stay here to see our plushmaking journey for a long time!That said, let's get to today's post :D We warn you that it will be long and with lots of WIPs
We can officially say that we are the plushie designers for the "I Think I Like You" webcomic. It's a comic we personally love and have followed from the beginning. So when Heru, the illustrator, contacted us for this project we were super excited!!In one hand, we loved all the characters and designs (the main character is a bunny! hehehe), and on the other hand, we have wanted to make more furry plushies for a long time. We have made very few until now and we want to create our own furry plush base in the near future to make YCH commissions with it. It's always cool to make customer's original designs, even cooler if they are fursonas or important OCs >w
Long story short, it was a chance we couldn't let pass. So this is how we started working with Heru and Syd.
Since it's quite a popular comic, they wanted us to design and make the plush prototypes for their characters, and send the patterns to a factory to mass produce them. This kind of work is more difficult than it seems, because even if we're used to making patterns to give as rewards, it's not the same to design a plush that will be handcrafted, than one that will be mass produced. All the seams needed to be 100% machine sewn. We could only leave the hole for stuffing. Embroideries needed to be as simple as possible. And the clothes, easy to sew for the factory.
Basically, we had to design everything in a very different way than we usually do. It was a big challenge, and we were afraid not to meet the expectations. But we trusted in our work and skills, so we got to it.
Their first order for the comic was none other than Sky, the main character. This character had already been into a mass produced plushie with Leon, the other main character, but while the hellhound turned out pretty good, their Sky was... ugly. The head and muzzle looked like a donkey, the bod was super compact and small, without any defined shapes. And the clothes were super tight on him. We literally had to rip its seams to take it off! It was also way smaller than Leon, and the idea was that they could swap clothes with each other hahaha.
So our goal was to remake the plush. It had to match with Leon, with a similar body shape so they could swatch clothes, matching size and proportions... The idea was that he was in a similar style as Leon but with our quality levels. We were limited by having to keep close to the other plushie's shapes, but we could handle it.
With that said, it was time to work! So as always, we started with the head.
Sky's head shape is a bit unique. It's not just a rabbit, it has an egg shape and then the muzzle. Then there's the huge ears and the fringe. Here's where we first found out how hard it was to make a plush 100% machine sewn. We usually hand sew the ears and hair, being able to give more dimensions and place everything where we want. But here we had to sew everything on the seams. In Sky's case it was easier because all the details were flat, but you'll see when we talk about Red in the next post...
In the first test, we already got a quite good shape, but since we machine sewed it, the eras position was off. They were super open!! hahaha
But well, we showed the clients the test, talked about the changes and did a couple more tests. On the third test it was already looking like what we were looking for. It made us so happy to read Heru and Syd say "Oh my god, he's Sky. Now we see him". We shed a tear ;3;
Once we had the perfect head shape, cute ears (we still had to place them better) and a fun fringe, we started working on the body.
The body was the most challenging part. Because again, we had to make it similar to Leon's, while fixing the mistakes it had. And since everythignwas machine sewn, we had to make full tests. In the first one, the legs were too open, the torso was short and we didn't like how the side view looked. It also leaned backwards and fell down. But little by little, with some adjustments, the creature was born.
Finally, after many more tests, we finished the body patterning! It already looked so cute and pretty. Luckily, Sky is completely plain, so making the final plush was simple :) We only needed to design the face and ears embroidery.
So with all the patterns done, we designed the embrodiery. And couple tests later, the plush was done!! Only the clothes were left, although with Leon's firefighter uniform he looked adorable >w<
To make the clothes we used the same technique as always. A bit of tape method and patience, and we got the perfect pattern! We made it slightly loose so it could fit on Leon, and it also needed details like the tail hole.
Finally, once we had the clothes patterns, we designed the details and ordered custom printed fabric on Contrado.
When it arrived, we sewed it and... We finished our adorable Sky plush!! You don't know how happy and excited we were, specially with the kind words of his creators. They really made us feel like we had brought Sky to life ;__;
We're very proud of the work we did with this project, and we were super comfortable working with the ITILY team. We're in the same wave for details and ideas. The changes we suggested for each test were the same ones they wanted, and they were super patient and kind during the whole process.We felt so good working with them that we decided to keep working together. And this is how we started working on Red! But that's a story for the next post ;)
What do you think about the plush? Did you like reading about our experience and process for this project? It's been long, but we hope you enjoyed it as much as we did.
From this project we have learned a lot about the difference between designing a plush for handmade projects and mass production. We're sure that in the future we do it even better! And of course, we have also had the chance to meed two wonderful people to work with ^^
----ESPAÑOL----
Hello everybunny!
I think i like you".
Pero bueno, enseñamos la prueba, hablamos de los cambios e hicimos un par de pruebas más. A la tercera ya empezó a verse el diseño que buscábamos. Nos hacía mucha ilusión leer a Heru y Syd decirnos "Oh dios santo, ahí está Sky. Ahora sí lo vemos". Se nos escapaba la lagrimita ;3;
Y finalmente... Terminamos a nuestro adorable Sky!!! No sabéis lo contentas y emocionadas que estábamos, sobre todo con las palabras de sus creadores. De verdad nos hacían sentir que habíamos conseguido traerlo a la vida ;__;
