Since this month was a bit hectic getting finances and commissions in order, I figure why not share something that I've been drafting up recently?
The world has a long history of "cunning-folk" in cultures all over the world, usually under the umbrella term of "folk healing" or "folk magic". There's a tactile aspect to magic that is felt when one incorporates the magical practice into daily life, such as when healers would make potions with mortar and pestle, or the sewing of protective charms into clothing.
This story's idea expounds on what might a cunning-folk reach when searching for magical treatments - and the fruits of such labour. A founder of one of the oldest hospitals in the country, the "Cunning Beast" is a long-lived doctor that studies in isolation, confined to the underground halls of his wizard-tower underneath the oldest foundations of the hospital.
Every few years, a new nurse is assigned to check in on him - ensuring that he's still alive and that he hasn't gone feral or insane. The latest nurse warden numbers forty-two, though something may become different as the cunning-beast becomes a doctor for all manner of magical or mysterious afflictions.
While I certainly have inspiration from pieces like Beast of X-Men or The Ancient Magus Bride, I would want this story to be more of an episodic series that focuses on a variety of patients with the Beast and the Nursewarden's relationship serving as a throughline for the plot.
I hope that you'll look forward to seeing more of these two as I come up with more solid design refs and names! (Suggestions are also welcome, though I will reserve the right to the final decision)
