I've previously mentioned that I'd been approached by a couple of production companies about making a documentary on good bad movies, and I'm finally in a position to share some reasonably solid news.
Later this year I'll be launching a Kickstarter aimed at funding a feature documentary tentatively titled Guilty Treasures.
I'm lucky enough to be working with executive producer Stuart Ashen and producer Oliver Harper, both of whom are YouTubers who've successfully crowdfunded and made a number of movies and documentaries.
I'd been in talks (for over a year!) with a production company behind a whole wave of hugely popular recent genre movie documentaries, but eventually realised there was no way to reconcile some fundamental differences. Once we finally parted ways, the independent option began to gather steam, so that's what I'm going to try and do.
Importantly, I'm working with YouTubers who understand how to manage a project like this without it impacting too much on a channel. So my usual videos will continue, and as I've got more streamlined and organised, there should be no slow down there at all.
The key reasons for going independent are that I have complete creative control (I don't want to make a 'listicle', I want to celebrate the movies but also get a little into why we love them). And being independent means we have control over the pricing, which means it won't start at $100 for a blu-ray. I also wanted to be able to offer exclusive options for Patreons, so that's what we'll be doing.
We're going to cover movies from the early 80s to the Neil Breenies, focusing first on accessible nonsense like Cannon sequels, then incompetent madness like Samurai Cop, Troll 2, etc. and finally the full-blown insanity of modern vanity projects. We haven't started contract work yet, but we've approached a host of filmmakers, actors and critics about appearing and the response has been great. I can't reveal names right now, but when I can it will be here.
Naturally there will be more to come over the next few months (including the final version of the work in progress artwork above). In the meantime, Borrowing Blockbusters: Evil Dead is incoming!
