HEY BABY BOYS!!!!!!
We're back with a production update for Space King 2. Things are going SWIMMINGLY as we continue our hard work on the next episode.
Episode 1 of Space King was a massive learning curve for us. Not only with the increased length of the episode, the complexity of setting up an entirely new and original universe, characters and everything else a first time series needs. We also switched to an entirely new animation software AND new management software AND a new team.
Fucking wew lad.
And so, a big part of setting up Space King 2 has been revising mistakes made in Space King 1. FOR EXAMPLE:
In TV animation, you build a sort of puppet out of 2d elements. This is to make animation efficient and smooth for the animators. Problem was, our first rig was a bit of a disaster:

As you can see it's now BEAUTIFUL and EFFICIENT. Something like this takes 3 whole fucking weeks to rebuild. But it's now perfect for every single episode of Space King going forward. You gotta set yourself up for success, that's what Space King would want.
The beautiful part is, now that we have this, if we want to now make more Psycho-Warriors (marines from space), it's really easy! Check out these bad boys. Ostrogoth? Easy.
Star Sharks? Jawmageddon!
Whatever the fuck legion this guy belongs to? Absolutely.
As the first 3 minutes enter the animation phase, the rest of the animatic is being finalized. All voice work is in, with Ricepirate (Mick Lauer) featuring as Exsanguinator and everyone else done me and Don because we're fucking cool like that.
THE SQUAD SHIP COMES ALIVE
One of the most fun things as a creative when you have a universe like this is getting to design the star locations. What's a star location? It's a location that will feature over and over again in a cartoon. Think the garage from Rick & Morty, the living room from The Simpsons, or the inside of your favorite porn-star's gutty works from your favorite porn star.
These locations get used a lot so you put extra special care and attention into them. Check out the inside of the Reclaimer Squad's personal ship:
HOW IT STARTED
This was the first rendition of the inside of the squad ship our background artist sent us. Obviously very competently made and the artist did a great job with the bones of the design. However, this is a place where BOYS hang out. Some notes were in order.
WHERE WE'RE AT
MUCH BETTER. It was tons of fun to come up with gags for this space. Trying to get in elements of people's characters throughout. Captain, Hatemonger, Bryce and Chestnut are all represented here along with clues about the squad's priorities. This'll be a living environment, where maybe every episode things will be shifted around to keep things interesting and give a sense of life and time flow to the universe.
Now all this needs is line work and colour and that's a background we'll have and use over and over again.
INTRODUCING HATEMACE
For those of you who have kept clear of spoilers from the script and the animatic. Here is our titular new character, Hatemace!Hatemaces are created in the Hate-Forges of Hatemonger's home planet, Planet Heaven. Equally as spiteful and hateful as their loving owners, Hatemaces are used as spiritual aides to help keep their wielders focused and resentful. As such, they're rather chatty.
In fact, such is their ability to test the purity of their owners, they will sense even the most minor fluctuations in tolerance towards the other and retract their spikes, becoming too heavy to wield should their wielder's faith and hatred waver for even a moment. As such it is incredibly difficult for a heretic or 'Mace-Traitor' to hide in the ranks of the various Hate Legions (The Beholders being Hatemonger's legion).
THAT'S ALL FOR NOW
Hopefully that taste of some of the things going on behind the scenes with Space King 2 is wetting your appetite for another Space King adventure. We'll be back soon with further updates and hopefully some animation!
