30FPS is inexcusable
DESCRIPTION

I think that's what the top comment said on the IGN impressions video for Paper Mario: The Thousand Year Door when I looked yesterday. It was something like that. I think a lot of us played Ocarina of Time when it came out, which is a game that often runs at sub-30FPS, sometimes dipping pretty low. It didn't really matter at the time, but for some reason, it matters to me now.

I've never been able to wrap my mind around the fact that my mind cares about something now that it didn't care about before, and that not caring about that thing would actually bring me more joy than caring about it. It feels like a huge waste of my life that I could play a game at 15FPS on a 6 inch screen on N64 for hours with friends in 1999 (Goldeneye), but if you sat me in front of that same experience now, my brain would fight you every step of the way. As I've gained more knowledge of what's technically feasible, my options for having fun have shrunk. What kind of joke is that?

One of my favorite gaming experiences ever was playing Persona 4 on a 13 inch CRT with the volume almost all the way down in the corner of my bedroom. Beating Ocarina of Time's 15FPS Ganon fight was totally blissful and satisfying. But I can still catch myself wanting to complain about the Switch's store menus being too laggy or the grass looking too aliased in some Xbox indie game. What a sham.

Thoughts?

[I'm working on another banger video. I'll spend a lot more time on Patreon starting in June. I'm finally able to quit my more-than-full-time job in food service to be a Youtuber (thank you all so much), and I intend to repay that debt to all you patrons right away. Including getting the backlog of Patreon video requests done. Every single one.]
