Patreon and Patreon subscribers — this is the publisher.
DESCRIPTION

Not in the legal sense, of course, but in the practical sense. A publisher is someone who gives money for game development and expects to receive certain dividends from it: usually in the form of a percentage of sales, a share of the profits, or some other commercial return. In the case of games like ours, the project is funded by subscribers. Only your reward is not monetary, but different:

early access;

development materials;

the opportunity to follow the process from the inside;

a certain degree of influence on production.

That is exactly why Patreon here is not “donations for luck” and not “supporting the author out of politeness.” This is mutually beneficial cooperation. A subscriber supports the project not because the author has beautiful eyes, but because they want the game to develop, receive updates, and live in general.

How does subscriber influence work? When there is one publisher, everything is quite simple. He says: “I want it this way,” — and the developer does it, if it fits within the agreements and the project’s capabilities. When the publisher is many people at once, everything becomes more complicated. It is impossible to simultaneously satisfy all the wishes of all subscribers, especially when they contradict each other. One wants more of one type of content, another — less, a third is waiting for something completely different, a fourth cares more about speed, a fifth — about quality, a sixth — about a specific fetish, a seventh — that their favorite storyline gets priority.

That’s why voting comes into play here. Yes, this is not an ideal system. But it is the only working system when it comes to a collective publisher.

In a practical sense, it looks simple: the decision is made by the majority — 50% + 1 vote. Not because it is particularly beautiful or perfectly fair in every individual case, but because without it, it is impossible to determine whose interests to prioritize at all.

Why aren’t every personal expectation taken into account? Because the project does not have the ability to be everything for everyone at once. A typical complaint looks like this: “I thought there would be more of this content in the update, and not the other.” And here it is important to understand a few things.

The composition of updates is usually announced in advance. I usually outline the approximate content of the update in advance.

Then this is additionally discussed in devlogs.

Art is published.

Materials are shown.

News comes out where it is directly stated what exactly is being done, what the current focus is, and what will be included in the release.

That is, the update does not fall from the sky at the last moment. Information about its composition is usually available in advance and is repeated more than once. If you didn’t take an interest in it, didn’t read the posts, didn’t look at the materials, and didn’t follow the devlogs — of course, that is your right. But then it is strange to later make claims about the update not being what you imagined it to be.

By the way, this time I even built the changelog directly into the game. Did it help? Hardly. And instead of development, I spent three days sorting through personal messages.

Okay, someone will say: “I’m paying, so answer me.” And I will answer. But there are almost two thousand of you, and even answering a hundred messages will take half a day. Is that what is expected of me? Or is it content after all? I don’t have a secretary — I answer all messages personally.

Personal expectation is not the same as the development plan

For example: “I thought the update would be more focused on the main storyline.” Well, but at the same time, the subscribers voted by majority for the event at the lake, for content with Tyler, Shelley, Emma, and Justin. A lot of art was published on this topic, there were materials, there were mentions in posts. So it’s not that the project suddenly veered off somewhere. It’s that your personal expectation did not coincide with the direction that was outlined in advance and supported by the majority.

“I don’t want to replay and load old saves.” And you don’t have to. Seriously: if you don’t want to — don’t replay and don’t load them. This is not a mandatory condition.

Firstly, most events can be opened later.

Secondly, this means that for you the next update may turn out to be even bigger than you originally expected, because some of the content will simply accumulate for you.

Therefore, the situation “I didn’t see this now because I don’t want to rollback” in itself is not a development problem. It is simply your personal way of playing the game.

We do what the majority chooses We focus on the requests of the majority — that is, the majority of the people who support the project. If the majority says: “make Nathan’s bar,” then we will make Nathan’s bar. Even though it’s complex content. And it is quite possible that in that case the main storyline will advance less than someone would like.

We focus on the volume of work Roughly speaking: once I have produced the required volume of text — after that I move on to art. That is, development has production logic, and not some magical principle of “stuffing everyone with everything they want.”

In the end, we are all connected here. I cannot make this game without you, and you cannot get exactly this game without us. A different one — of course you can. But if you didn’t like this one, you simply wouldn’t be here. And we, most likely, wouldn’t have been here for a long time either.

Following the news is in your own interest. The more attentively you follow what is happening in development, the fewer disappointments there will be due to expectations that you invented for yourself.

ранний доступ;

материалы по разработке;

возможность следить за процессом изнутри;
