National Anomalous Preserves Weekly Incident Report

To: Bureau of Ranger Management

From: Head Ranger Rodrigo Sumter

Date: Week of February 15th - 21st, 1999

INCIDENTS

99-103: Base of “Crescent Moon” Tower

At 10:15 am on the 15th, Rangers were notified by hikers that a “man with weird-looking equipment” was present at the base of the Crescent Moon tower. Responding rangers found a man, T.G. from Milton, Delaware, who claimed to be a member of the Society for Ancient Truths, a nationally recognized fringe-research collective with ties to the Tomorrow’s Rise Network, a recognized counter-containment organization. After a brief standoff, T.G. was arrested and escorted off of preserve property. His equipment and research materials were confiscated and turned over to the preserve’s designated Federal Anomalous Incident Agent.

99-104: Jagged Skyline Trailhead

Park rangers and maintenance staff responded to a call reporting “strange shrieking noises” coming from the locked men’s bathroom at the Jagged Skyline Trailhead. After unlocking the bathroom door, staff found a distraught cougar inside the stall that had apparently become locked in the restroom sometime overnight. Rangers closed the trailhead, funneled visitors out, then, once the area was clear, opened the door and released the cougar.

99-105: Interior of the “Hollow Chapel” Tower

A park-sanctioned research team arrived at the remote “Hollow Chapel” tower to conduct a study on the population of bats known to inhabit the Hollow Chapel. Upon arrival, the team found a person in the late stages of Hum-Induced psychosis in the tower’s central chamber. The individual was identified by one of the researchers as L.U., a missing person from the nearby town of Tonopah. The team attempted to coax out L.U., but abandoned their rescue efforts after L.U. began “shooting at us with a beam of purple energy that emerged from the center of his forehead”. The park’s designated Federal Anomalous Incident Agent was notified, and immediate euthanization of L.U. was authorized. Extermination Team Tau eliminated L.U. at approximately 1:30 PM on the 18th. L.U.’s body was turned over to the preserve’s designated Federal Anomalous Incident Agent for study.

99-106: Primary Staff Lounge

A park ranger, F.L., was found passed out drunk in the staff lounge in the early morning of the 19th, next to an empty bottle of rum. This marks F.L.’s third instance of intoxication on preserve property. Though the third strike would normally be grounds for immediate employment termination, F.L.’s heroic role in the “Screaming Tower” disaster last year was taken into account. Rather than be fired, F.L. has been placed on paid administrative leave and referred to a local substance abuse counselor. F.L. must complete at least 12 hours of mandatory counseling and undergo a psych eval before she is allowed to return to on-site duty.

99-107: “7 Winds” Tower

A yearly survey of the 7 Winds tower revealed that the tower has “grown” by nearly 7 inches in the last year. Further study revealed that the “growth” was not the result of erosion wearing away the ground at the base of the tower, but rather came from the top of the tower, where a new branch of the same metallic substance that makes up the rest of the tower has sprouted. This marks the first recorded “growth” of any tower since the founding of the preserve. The 7 Winds Loop hike has been closed for the foreseeable future so that research may continue unimpeded by guests, and the park’s designated Federal Anomalous Incident Agent has been notified.

00-062: Main Visitor’s Center

A customer, P.A. from Waco, Texas, became irate at the Main Visitor’s Center souvenir shop after the cashier refused to honor an invalid “sale” sticker that was attached to a poster P.A. was attempting to buy. P.A. continued to yell at the cashier for a total of 7 minutes, only leaving once she was told that park security was en route to remove her. Review of security footage found that P.A. removed the sale sticker from a mug on an adjacent shelf and placed it onto the poster herself. P.A. has been subsequently added to the preserve’s temporary blacklist and has been served with a 3-year entry ban.

00-063: Preserve Western Boundary Fence, Mile Marker 5

R.R., a permanently blacklisted hum addict from Reno, Nevada, was found attempting to break into the park by two security rangers. R.R. ignored commands from rangers to depart, and instead attempted to run into the park on foot after scaling the fence. The rangers chased R.R. down in their truck and successfully managed to detain him near the Podunk Spring Campground. R.R. bit both rangers during the arrest. R.R. was turned over to local authorities and charged with aggravated assault, while both rangers went to the park medical center for immediate wound care.
