Overview and Clarification 概述與澄清
The main reason we waited a few days before posting this announcement, was because we want to be patient and thorough with the situation. We don’t want to accidentally blame innocent people. Therefore we made sure to look at everything on the server, chat history and stuff, to really understand what had happened. The second reason is because we all are normal human beings. We could only dedicate some free time in our busy days to this.

I try to be as clear and fair as possible, in presenting this investigation, with chat history taken from the server. I tried my best to put them in a chronological order to help you understand. Since there are a lot of chats, we will have to cross reference them sometimes, therefore I gave each image a number so we can reference them easier.

This isn’t a post about pointing fingers or making anyone bad, This is only about the users that were involved in the incident. I kindly request everyone to read it with an open mind. This is only to explain everything that has happened on the server with evidence and different perspectives. Since they have made their own version of the story and claimed they are victims while making us all look like bad guys, I think it’s only fair that we share our side of the story too, to clear those false accusations.

First thing, some players misunderstood. I’m not removing the Chinese translation in the game, I never said that. Future versions will all have Chinese language translation, and other language translations included. Please do not worry. The only change is about the official community on Discord, which will be back to English only like in the past. Some players expressed their concern that I am “giving up” on Chinese players by removing Chinese chat on the server. No. It has nothing to do with “giving up” on anyone. It’s a plan that I have been considering for almost a year now, to simplify the community. It just so happened that on the day that I returned to make changes, this incident happened, which further accelerated my plan to optimize and simplify the community. It is for the sake of helping me focus on game development more, as explained in the earlier post. Please do not misinterpret my intention. I have expressed the thought of creating a better workflow and optimizing things long ago, in a few progress report posts during earlier versions. This isn't about anyone.

This game or server isn’t built for any specific group of people or nationality. It’s built for the players who play New Horizon, that includes everyone from the world, it’s an international community.

Some of them also say that just because I can speak Chinese Mandarin, that means I should always use it, otherwise it’s seen as giving up on Chinese players. My response to that is, whichever language I choose to use my own choice. It has nothing to do with anyone. The official language here is English as it is an international community. However, if any Chinese players asked me questions in private, I always responded and explained respectfully in Chinese to them. There is no issue here.

What happened on the night of April 21 4月21日當晚發生的經過

On April 20, at around 11:30pm in my time zone(GMT +8). After posting the progress report on my Patreon and the server, and getting ready to get back to deal with everything, I was prompted to answer some questions a number of Chinese players had in the Chinese channel. I totally understand some of their frustration, and I respectfully answered all of their questions.

At first, everyone was mostly respectful and behaving. They had questions and they deserve answers from me. We were resolving the issues one by one, peacefully. Perhaps because I’m a slow typer, and they were eager to get answers, a number of users were getting impatient and spamming some unrelated messages occasionally. A few ragebait messages here and there for fun. But it was mostly peaceful, and we all just wanted to reach mutual understanding.
The Chinese users had accepted my answers. And as I answered the fourth question, a few Chinese users sent translated screenshots of English chat, falsely claiming they are making fun of Chinese chat.
起初，大家基本上都保持禮貌且守規矩。他們有疑問，而我也理應給予答覆。我們當時正和平地逐一解決問題。或許是因為我打字較慢，而他們急於得到答案，一些使用者開始變得不耐煩，偶爾會刷一些無關的訊息，中間也夾雜了幾則帶有引戰意味的訊息。但總體來說過程是和平的，我們都只是想達成共識。
當時中文用戶們已經接受了我的回答。然而，正當我在回答第四個問題時，幾名中文使用者傳送了英文聊天記錄的翻譯截圖，誣稱英文頻道的玩家正在嘲笑中文頻道的對話。

The English chat users were describing the situation of unrelated spam messages and ragebait comments made by some users in the Chinese channel, because they were interrupting our peaceful attempts at resolving the misunderstandings. Even our moderator and some of the Chinese users were urging them to stop spamming so the important messages don’t get lost in the sea of unrelated messages. They weren’t making fun of the ones that were asking questions peacefully to seek clarification. They were expressing concerns, not mocking. If you read through it, you will understand. Everyone wants the thing to be resolved peacefully, without the chaos of unnecessary spams and ragebait words.
英文頻道的玩家當時是在描述中文頻道裡，部分使用者發送無關刷屏洗版訊息和挑釁言論的情況；這是因為這些行為干擾了我們試圖和平化解誤解的努力。當時甚至連我們的管理員以及部分中文玩家，都在督促那些人停止洗版，以免重要的訊息淹沒在大量的無關訊息中。英文玩家們並非在嘲笑那些和平提問以尋求澄清的人，他們是在表達擔憂，而非嘲諷。如果你仔細閱讀對話內容，就會明白這一點。每個人都希望事情能和平解決，而不受那些不必要的洗版和挑釁言論干擾。
The chat remained calm. The jokes between some English users and Ky will be explained later, as it was also misunderstood by the Chinese users.
當時聊天氣氛依然保持冷靜。至於部分英文玩家與 Ky 之間的玩笑，稍後會再作說明，因為這部分也被中文玩家誤解了。

Topics typically move fairly fast in the English channel, as most of the users that interact here are all pretty familiar with each other, they usually like to talk shit at each other with no meaning of harm, and they all know each other’s boundaries. While complaining about his brother with user Kaito, user Geo’s words seem out-of-context here, which understandably, is very easy to cause misunderstanding for people who don't know his personality and how they usually chat. They weren’t mocking Chinese chat at that time, which he would later explain and apologize to the Chinese users and they did accept it.
While some jokes were misunderstood, at this point, most English and Chinese users were still being reasonable and trying to solve the misunderstanding. Except some Chinese users who couldn’t control themselves, and kept cursing at our staff.

None of the people in English chat ever used curse words or any attack towards Chinese channel users as you could see in previous images. However, the Chinese user threeknives went straight to cursing and attacked the English users. Our moderator muted him according to rules. Yet he argued that he should be allowed to say f words, calling us bad for enforcing the rules on the server. He used that to spread more misinformation to other oblivious Chinese users, to stir up emotional unrest without getting a full understanding of what was really going on.

Due to the poor translation and some out-of-context screenshot used by a few Chinese users, they kept fueling what is essentially a non-existent issue/argument between English and Chinese chat, and that led to a number of Chinese users to jump to English chat and start cursing and stirring up troubles. At the same time, they kept on using personal attacks and racist words in Chinese chat.
由於翻譯的問題，加上少數幾位中文使用者使用了斷章取義的截圖，他們不斷煽風點火，將一個本質上不存在的「英中頻道爭端」擴大化。這導致大量中文使用者湧入英文頻道開始辱罵並挑起事端。與此同時，他們在中文頻道中也不斷使用人身攻擊和種族歧視的言論。

However, English channel users remained calm and tried to explain the misunderstanding to a few peaceful Chinese users who were trying to understand the real situation.

As mentioned earlier, while some reasonable Chinese users were trying to understand what was misunderstood in English chat, a number of heated Chinese users resorted to constant cursing, personal attacks, and racism.
User Falk wanted to stand up for English chat, and decided to engage in an altercation with those heated users. As you can see, at the start, Falk was behaving, didn’t use any curse words, personal attacks or anything. Just pure bickering. The heated Chinese user, however, kept on attacking Falk with curse words, and serious offenses.

After receiving dozens of personal attacks, racial slurs and death threats, Falk decided to fight back by posting an image of the Qing Dynasty being divided by old colonial empires, an image that was created as sarcasm many decades ago. Was it the best response to all of the insults he had received? Definitely not, but he also had every reason to fight back. Immediately after posting that, we timeout Falk for a while, warned and talked to him that it wasn’t right to resort to politics, and he, in fact, has not used it anymore.

Geo never really mocked or targeted Chinese users at all, but his out-of-context chats were easy to cause misunderstanding. Therefore he decided to head to Chinese chat to apologize for causing a misunderstanding.
Geo 從頭到尾都沒有嘲諷或針對中文玩家，但他在斷章取義下的聊天記錄確實容易引起誤會。因此，他決定親自前往中文頻道，為造成的誤解致歉。
Despite Geo’s repeated genuine apology, and staff’s explanation, all of the peaceful attempts to resolve things were dismissed by the heated players. They wouldn’t listen, and kept on spamming chats and doing personal attacks. That was when it was clear that no matter what we have said, it wouldn’t get through their head. So we decided to wait a little so they could calm down. At last, a few reasonable Chinese users understood Geo’s situation and accepted his apology.
儘管 Geo 再三誠懇地道歉，加上工作人員的解釋，所有試圖和平解決問題的努力都被那些情緒激動的玩家給無視了。他們拒絕溝通，並持續洗版及進行人身攻擊。在那一刻，我們很清楚無論我們說什麼，他們都聽不進去。因此，我們決定先等待一段時間，讓他們冷靜下來。最終，還是有幾位理智的中文玩家理解了 Geo 的處境，並接受了他的道歉。

Worried that the Chinese users might misunderstand again, moderator Ky translated his explanation into Chinese text and to which, they also accepted later. Ky and those who frequently chat in the English Channel are all friends, and they are used to shit talking and joking with each other. They know where each other’s boundaries are. None of them were talking about Chinese users in those jokes. It was a joke among close friends and one of his alt accounts.

However, some of them still hold grudges against the sarcastic image user Falk used before he was punished. They seek explanations while disregarding the fact that they had used multiple racist words and personal attack on him first, as shown in Imagine 3-1.
然而，仍有部分人對 Falk 在受到懲罰前使用的那張諷刺圖片耿耿於懷。他們要求解釋，卻忽視了如《圖 3-1》所示，是他們先對 Falk 使用了大量的種族歧視言論與人身攻擊。
The server is not a place to talk about politics, and that’s why we had immediately removed that and given punishment. We are not, however, responsible for individual users’ behavior.
Nonetheless, after a little while, the situation finally calmed down a little as it was getting late, and some of the Chinese users went to sleep. The English users and the moderators tried their best to make sure it stays peaceful, and had all been respectful towards the Chinese users.

Here are some more examples of the racial slurs and personal attacks some Chinese users used on us. As well as the proof that they realized they misunderstood the situation, but some of them seemingly don’t want to admit it.
The whole duration of the night, the Chinese users have constantly resorted to personal attacks, racism and cursing, in both Chinese and English channels.
這裡有更多關於部分中文用戶對我們進行種族歧視謾罵與人身攻擊的例子。同時也有證據顯示，他們已經意識到自己誤解了情況，但其中有些人似乎不願承認。 在當晚的整個過程中，部分中文用戶不斷地在中文與英文頻道中，訴諸人身攻擊、種族歧視以及辱罵言論。

After everything had calmed down, a few Chinese users stayed to chat in the English channel. For the most part, everyone was peaceful. However, one user was using a more condescending, commanding, and sarcastic tone to talk about the event. To be fair, it could be the fault of the translator that couldn’t effectively get the correct tone and feeling across. After seeing English users and staff members getting personally attacked over misunderstanding the whole night and not receiving any apology from them, a former Moderator at that time decided to speak up for the English users, he was being reasonable at the start. A Chinese user then put up an attitude, claiming we turned them into culprits, and called us clowns. Another user then adds fuel to the fire by sarcastically telling Dr.NoBody to get scolded by him and constant ragebaiting. The two Chinese users, thankfully, didn’t escalate the argument further.
在一切平息之後，幾位中文玩家留下來在英文頻道聊天。大部分情況下，大家都相處得很和平。然而，有一位使用者以一種較為高傲、頤指氣使且帶有諷刺意味的口氣談論這起事件。公平地說，這有可能是翻譯軟體的錯，無法有效地傳達正確的語氣和感受。在目睹了英文玩家和管理人員因為誤會而被攻擊了一整晚，且始終沒有收到對方的道歉後，當時的一位前任管理員決定為英文玩家發聲；他在起初是非常理性的。接著，一位中文使用者擺出了較高傲的姿態，聲稱我們把他們變成了罪魁禍首，並稱呼我們為「小丑」。另一位使用者隨後火上澆油，諷刺地叫 Dr.NoBody 過來挨他的罵，並不斷發出挑釁言論。幸好，這兩位中文使用者並沒有進一步擴大爭端。
This is when user Dr.NoBody decided to fight back. It wasn’t the best way, but he felt the need to defend his community, because we had been falsely accused too many times that night. When he misunderstood and blamed the wrong user, he apologized to that user. And if you have read the post thoroughly so far, you can tell that there is some truth in what Dr.NoBody was saying. However, it still wasn’t the best way to handle things. So we warned and communicated with him, and he stopped.

After a little while, things have calmed down a little. However, after a temporary peace, and the change to English only policy on server, some Chinese users came and threw out more malicious memes meant as insults, and curse words, or even death threats. That's why they are banned as we had given them second chances before, but they wasted it by violating it again.
過了一段時間後，情況稍微冷靜了下來。然而，在短暫的和平以及伺服器更改回英文頻道為主政策之後，一些中文用戶又傳送了更多具有惡意侮辱性質的迷因、髒話，甚至死亡威脅。這就是他們被封禁的原因；我們之前已經給過他們第二次機會，但他們卻再次違反規範，浪費了這些機會。
User Goofy, seeing the very malicious personal attack message sent by user threeknives, decided to not tolerate and fight back. Note that he was being kind to the other Chinese users who were peaceful and behaving. However, his racist remark was definitely not right. Therefore we gave him a warning, and timeout him for a while, according to the rule.
玩家 Goofy 在看到用戶threeknives傳送的極具惡意的人身攻擊訊息後，決定不再忍讓並予以回擊。請注意，他對其他和平且守規矩的中文玩家是非常友善的。然而，他的種族歧視言論絕對是不正確的。因此，我們根據規範給予他警告，並對其進行了暫時禁言。
I didn’t ban anyone who used racist words immediately, because of the rule:
Racist comments are not tolerated. You get one chance to change. A second offense will result in ban. We do not condone racist behavior, and we are not responsible for the acts of individual users on the server. However, I do believe everyone deserves a second chance if they learn to stop and change their behavior. Instead of just banning immediately, we want them to know first that it’s wrong. People can, and do change for the better.
我沒有立即封禁任何使用種族歧視言論的人，是基於以下規範：不容忍種族歧視言論。每個人有一次改正的機會。第二次違規將導致封禁。我們不縱容種族歧視行為，也不對伺服器上個別使用者的行為負責。然而，我相信如果每個人能學會停止並改變自己的行為，都值得擁有第二次機會。與其立即封禁，我們希望先讓他們知道這是錯誤的。人們是可以、也確實會變得更好。
As both sides had violated the rule, I was being fair and gave both sides one more chance, and gave warning. User Falk and Goofy, in fact, have not made any racist comments anymore after the warnings and timeouts we gave them. The Chinese users who made racist comments or personal attacks were also given a second chance, we didn’t immediately ban anyone. We act according to the rules, being fair to everyone. In fact, I had given those Chinese users more chances than anyone else. They have used curse words, personal attacks, death threats and racist words at our moderators and some English users the whole night, some more than 10 times. We gave them chances to calm down, and had been trying to reason with them. But it was clear that most of them had lost their ability to be reasonable. As a result, when they violated the rule again, we banned them.

This is what some Chinese users do now after watching the crafted tiktok videos, and rumors made by those heated and resentful Chinese players. They believed it fully, and came throwing racial slurs and hateful comments on my page. I didn’t include all, and just a few examples, as I think we have already seen enough of their deliberate insults.
在觀看了那些情緒激動且心懷怨恨的中文玩家所製作的抖音影片及散佈的謠言後，這就是目前部分中文使用者的所作所為。他們對此深信不疑，並湧入我的頁面留下種族歧視的謾罵與仇恨評論。我並未列出全部，僅舉出幾個例子，因為我認為大家已經看夠了他們這些刻意的侮辱。
Reflection on the Situation 對此事件的反思
None of the users from English chat or moderators had used any personal attacks or curse words at the Chinese users. The only time two users used mild criticizing words to certain Chinese users were when they have received too many deliberate personal attacks and curse words and racism from Chinese chats, so they resort to fighting back a little. We had been really patient and respectful with Chinese users and explained everything, until we couldn’t tolerate any longer.
英文頻道的玩家與管理員從未對中文玩家使用任何人身攻擊或辱罵言論。僅有的兩次情況，是兩位玩家在遭受了中文頻道過多刻意的人身攻擊、咒罵與種族歧視後，因無法忍受而選擇了輕微的回擊。在忍無可忍之前，我們一直對中文玩家保持著極大的耐心與尊重，並解釋了一切。
We had been fair to both sides, and exercised caution as best as we could, taking our time to assess what had really happened before making any decisions, because it was a mess and everyone was stressed. We want to make sure everything is accounted for so we don't falsely blame innocent people. But we were painted as bad guys by some of them, and they think we are unfair to them, and that everything was about them. However, it was not true at all.

Another point was the use of translators, and how poorly a lot of messages were translated. A lot of slang and abbreviations cannot be well translated.
That had caused a lot of unnecessary misunderstanding during that heated moment, because people can't think clearly when they're angry. I could understand some of their frustration, but weaponizing their emotions to hurt others before getting a full understanding about the situation, is never the right way to do things.

This isn’t to create any hostility with anyone. I’m sure most are also just normally enjoying the game and want to talk about their hobbies and activities with anyone else peacefully. This only addresses those Chinese users who clearly misunderstood the whole situation and used their own crafted, out-of-context content to spread false rumors about us.

Ultimately, I don’t think everyone involved in this incident is necessarily bad. There was a lot of miscommunication, and people got blinded when they got too heated. We do not have any hostility towards anyone. As long as everyone is being respectful to each other, and if any misunderstandings occur, we talk it out peacefully with clear communication. No spamming, no cursing, and no personal attacks.

Improving the Community Safety 改善社群安全
The server grew more quickly than we had imagined, and perhaps we weren’t fully prepared for that. It started just as a place for close friends and familiar players to discuss the game and to have fun in. As it has become a big community now, we are now in the process of setting up and optimizing a system for the staff to follow now, to improve community safety and to prevent incidents like this from happening again.

I do apologize for the misunderstanding. However, I do not tolerate the random attacks and slanders from anyone before they actually try to learn the truth of the whole situation. They are asking for unreasonable demands when they were serious offenders in the first place. As a community for adult games, we tend to be lenient and laid back as long as people behave themselves. However, as mentioned in the post, we had also been fair to everyone and acted according to the rules.

And I understand that there will still be some that might not believe me, hate me and twist my words to form their narratives. Unfortunately, it’s impossible to convince everyone. We all have our own realities and opinions. The best we can do as a community is to reflect and try to learn from mistakes that we may have made unintentionally, and try to improve. We are all just people who voluntarily help bring peace and build the servers. Nobody is immune to making mistakes. However, we also won’t tolerate being falsely accused or slandered by anyone.
