[The industrial district]

Old warehouses lined both sides of the street, their faded walls covered in graffiti and rusted fire escapes. A crowd had gathered behind metal barricades near the corner, with several people holding phones up to record whatever was happening beyond the police tape.

Lucifer walked straight toward them with Chloe a few steps behind him.

A traffic cop noticed him crossing the open space and rushed forward, one hand raised.

“Sir. Uh. You have to stay behind the barricade...”

Lucifer barely acknowledged him. He slipped past the barrier as though it had been placed there purely for other people, then continued into the street without slowing down.

The traffic cop stared after him in disbelief.

Then an engine roared somewhere around the corner.

A muscle car came tearing into view at impossible speed, pursued by two police cars with lights flashing and sirens screaming through the industrial streets. Gunfire cracked through the air. One of the muscle car’s tires exploded, sending the vehicle skidding sideways before it flipped hard onto its roof.

The crowd screamed.

The car slammed across the street, sparks ripping beneath its crushed frame as it slid directly toward Lucifer.

He did not move.

The wrecked car came to a stop inches from his shoes.

For several seconds, Lucifer simply looked down at it, mildly annoyed that someone had nearly interrupted his afternoon with a collapsing vehicle.

Then an angry voice exploded from somewhere nearby.

“WHO THE FUCK IS THIS GUY?!”

Lucifer looked toward the sound.

A large video monitor stood near the sidewalk, surrounded by camera equipment, cables, lighting rigs, and crew members. An assistant director stormed away from the monitor with an expression that suggested someone had just ruined the most expensive shot of his career.

Chloe hurried over with two uniformed officers behind her and held up her badge.

“He's with me! Sorry.”

Lucifer ignored the assistant director and looked past him toward the overturned vehicle.

A stunt actor was being helped from the wreckage. He had the same neat jawline, the same expensive hairstyle, and the same blandly handsome face that Lucifer had expected to see.

Lucifer frowned.

“You are definitely not Grey Cooper.”

The assistant director threw both hands in the air.

“No! Of course not! What the hell is this?”

Chloe stepped forward.

“We need to speak with Grey Cooper.”

A few minutes later, they found him farther down the street near another section of the set.

Grey Cooper stood beside a trailer with fake cuts and bruises painted across his face, clearly part of the day’s filming. He looked genuinely shaken when Chloe mentioned Delilah’s name.

“God, Delilah, yeah... heard about that this morning. Can’t believe it. We did a movie together last year. Got pretty close. I'm glad she's alive.”

Lucifer tilted his head.

“Close enough to share a bed, I wonder?”

“Friends.”

Lucifer gave him a knowing look.

“Friends who kept finding themselves half-dressed in the same room?”

Grey frowned at him, clearly wondering who this strange man was.

Chloe gave Lucifer a sharp look.

“Settle down. I’ll handle the questions, thank you.” She turned back toward Grey. “Mr. Cooper, when did you last have contact with Delilah?”

Lucifer raised one finger.

“Before we descend into the tedious procedural section, I have one rather interesting question.”

He turned toward Grey with a bright smile.

“What is it that you desire, Mr. Cooper? What is the secret fantasy waiting in that little head of yours? What do you see when you close your eyes?”

Chloe rolled her eyes. 'Here we go again.'

Grey looked at Lucifer for several awkward seconds before the answer escaped him.

“I'm the President of the United States.”

Lucifer laughed.

“Well, that is certainly ambitious. Although I suppose the Devil might still have some competition after all.”

Grey immediately looked embarrassed, as though he had not meant to say the words aloud.

Chloe glanced at Lucifer with the faintest hint of surprise before taking over.

“Those are some pretty big aspirations there, Mr. Cooper.”

“Well. After the acting and stuff-”

“Oh, don’t be embarrassed. Hell, if Arnold can do it, right? But ya know, you wouldn’t want any nasty secrets screwin’ that up, would you?” She said.

“No... I wouldn’t.”

“Better to pull the skeletons out now... public’s very forgetful.”

Lucifer looked genuinely confused. “Why would anyone want to become a politician when they already get paid to pretend for a living? You make films, Mr. Cooper. Surely that must be more enjoyable. Although I cannot say I have ever enjoyed one of yours.”

A black SUV pulled up behind them.

Grey’s annoyance sharpened. “Is there a point to this?”

Chloe did not blink. “Mr. Cooper, were you having an affair with Delilah?”

Grey’s mouth fell open.

Before he could answer, the SUV door opened and Amanda Bello stepped out. She looked immaculate, even on a film set, dressed with the practiced confidence of someone accustomed to cameras following every movement.

“Honey, have you been getting my texts? I thought you were breaking for lunch like a half-hour ago-”

She stopped when she saw Chloe, Lucifer, the officers, and Grey’s deeply uncomfortable expression.

“What’s going on?”

“These people are detectives,” Grey said quickly.

Amanda looked at Chloe.

“Real ones?”

“Yes, ma’am. Well, I am.”

Lucifer looked Amanda over with open admiration.

“You are far more striking in person. There is a certain glow about you that cameras seem incapable of capturing.”

“Thank you!”

Lucifer considered that.

“Although I must admit, I have never cared for your work on the big screen.”

Amanda blinked.

“Thank you...?”

“My apologies. Lucifer Morningstar.”

He extended his hand. Amanda took it.

The moment their eyes met, Lucifer felt the familiar pull of his gift begin to work.

“Wow. Great name. What’s this about?”

“We had some questions. About Delilah.”

Amanda released Lucifer’s hand and turned to Chloe with immediate concern. “Oh. Yes. That’s so sad. Can't believe that someone would try to kill her.”

“Yeah... very... sad...” Grey wiped sweat from his brow.

Chloe’s attention shifted toward his wrist.

The watch.

It was expensive and identical to the one Eddie Deacon had been wearing when he died outside Lux.

“Your watch. Where’d you get it?” Chloe asked.

Grey looked at his watch. “Oh... um, it’s a prop...”

Amanda pointed out, “No, that’s the one Delilah gave you, isn’t it? For Time Will Tell.”

Grey forced a laugh. “Oh, right. That’s the movie we did. It was a... wrap gift.”

Chloe’s eyes narrowed. “She gave a ten-thousand-dollar watch to the whole crew?"

“Oh, no. Just me. Far as I know. ‘Cause we were... ya know, co-stars and everything," Cooper replied.

Lucifer turned toward him with an amused expression. “If you wish to become president one day, Mr. Cooper, you will need to become significantly better at lying.”

Grey looked at him, then lowered his voice. “I know, right?”

Lucifer’s smile widened. “So you were sleeping with her then?”

“Oh, yeah.” Cooper nodded with a happy smile.

Amanda slowly turned her head.

“Uh, I can hear you, Grey.”

“So can I,” Chloe added.

Grey stared at Lucifer in panic. “Crap. I just said that out loud, didn’t I?”

Amanda barely looked surprised. “Whatever. Not like I didn’t know, Grey. You’re a terrible liar. And actor, by the way.”

Grey turned toward her.

“You knew?”

“Of course. Why do you think I’ve been sleeping with Bobby?”

Grey looked toward his bodyguard.

Bobby nearly choked.

Amanda folded her arms. “And lemme tell you, it’s gooood. I climb that man like a tree,” She said with an expression that looked like she just had a round on her way to the set.

Grey looked horrified.

“Are you serious?! My bodyguard?! What a cliché!”

“Oh, I’m a cliché?! Well, you’re a dick.”

Grey spun toward Bobby, anger exploding across his face.

Bobby instinctively raised both hands, though that did not stop Grey from lunging at him. Amanda tried to separate them while the two men stumbled into a nearby equipment cart, knocking over cables and sending a crew member running for safety.

Lucifer watched the chaos with obvious delight. 'Hehehe. Nice.'

Chloe studied Grey, Amanda, and Bobby for a brief moment before nodding toward the uniformed officers who were on the set to protect the high-profile actors.

"Arrest them," She turned to Lucifer. “One of ‘em’s gotta be guilty.”

Lucifer smiled brightly. “That was considerably more entertaining than I expected.”

Chloe looked at him.

For the first time that day, a small smug smile appeared on her face.

Around them, Grey shouted at Bobby, Amanda shouted at Grey, the officers moved in to separate them, and the confused film crew watched their entire afternoon dissolve into a spectacle.

Lucifer and Chloe stood together at the edge of the mess, both of them watching the chaos they had helped create.

...

...

[Later that evening]

The hospital had given them nothing useful.

Delilah had been awake when Chloe and Lucifer arrived, but every question about the watch sent her back into the shooting. Her breathing turned shallow, her eyes lost focus, and the words coming from her mouth had stopped making sense. The doctor eventually asked them to leave before the interview pushed her any further.

Lucifer had not argued.

That alone worried Chloe more than she wanted to admit.

By the time they returned to Lux, night had settled across Los Angeles again. The club had reopened, though the usual loud confidence felt slightly muted after the shooting outside. Music rolled through the room, people drank beneath colored lights, and the city continued pretending nothing terrible had happened.

Chloe sat at the bar with a beer in one hand and her phone in the other. Her smug expression from the film set was gone. Lucifer sat beside her with a glass of scotch, spinning the Pentecostal Coin across the counter with one lazy finger. Maze stood several feet away, watching both of them with a look that suggested she found the entire arrangement deeply irritating.

“I know. Check again. What about their assistants’ phones, nannies?... Fan pages? Twitter?” Chloe said into the phone, her eyes fixed on the beer in front of her.

She listened for a moment, then rubbed her forehead with tired frustration. “Okay... Call if anything changes.”

Chloe ended the call and took a long drink before looking toward Lucifer. “Grey and Amanda have zero connection to the shooter or the driver. Maybe the shooter wasn’t working for anyone. Maybe this thing does start and end with him.”

Lucifer stopped spinning the coin for the first time since they had returned. His expression hardened as the coin rested beneath his palm.

“No,” he said quietly. “I don’t believe it.”

Chloe looked toward him. “He did have the same watch as Grey. Can’t be a coincidence. Maybe Delilah gave it to him, too? Kind of her go-to gift.”

Lucifer looked disgusted by the suggestion. “But that would imply she was sleeping with that maggot.”

“Let's see, Jimmy, 2VILE, Grey Cooper... She was sleeping with three other maggots. Not like she had tremendous discretion.” Chloe took another drink, then stared around the nightclub as if Lux itself had personally offended her. “God... why am I here?”

Lucifer lifted his glass slightly. “Wrong deity, but that is the eternal question, isn’t it?”

Chloe looked at him over the rim of her beer. “No. I mean, here. In a bar. With you.”

For a moment, neither of them spoke.

The music shifted into something slower. A few people danced near the far side of the room, laughing beneath colored lights while bartenders poured drinks without paying attention to the strange tension building at one end of the counter. Maze watched Lucifer from behind the bar, her expression sharpening when his usual grin faded.

Lucifer turned toward Chloe, studying her with a seriousness that did not belong to the man who had spent most of the day annoying her on purpose.

“I don’t know, Detective. Despite your proclaimed revulsion, you can’t deny there’s a connection between us.” He paused, then lowered his voice. “Tell me... what do you really want?”

Chloe gave him a faint, mocking smile. “You mean, WHAT do I desire more than anything in this life?”

“Yes,” Lucifer said. “No tricks, not that they work with you, you freak. Tell me. I’m curious.”

The question seemed genuine.

Chloe looked down at her beer, turning the bottle slowly between her fingers. Maybe it was the exhaustion or the alcohol. Maybe it was the strange way Lucifer had defended her in front of Dan, or the way he had listened when she talked about the precinct.

“I suppose what I was saying before wasn’t all a lie... I do want to help people... I dunno...”

Lucifer frowned as if her answer had disappointed him personally. “Your purity repulses me.”

“Well, your lack of it isn’t wildly attractive either.”

Lucifer’s mouth twitched. Chloe raised her beer, and after a brief pause, he tapped his glass against it.

“My father was a cop. A pretty great one. My mother was an actress. Pretty cheesy one,” Chloe continued, looking out at the crowded dance floor. “I tried the acting thing. Took my top off, not exactly contributing to the betterment of society.”

Lucifer opened his mouth, clearly prepared to disagree.

“Anyway. Didn’t like how it made me feel about myself. So I quit. Became a cop like my old man. Endured the staring and teasing from the entire department. ‘Til I became a detective and found a whole new way to ostracize myself.”

Lucifer’s eyes sharpened. “Ah. The reason your ex-maggot was pressuring you to close this.”

“Yeah. Few months ago, I saw a case differently than a lot of people in the department, including my ex. Stuck my neck out ...backfired. Now most of ‘em hate me. And nobody’ll work with me.”

Lucifer leaned back against the bar, his tone casual even though something warmer flickered behind his eyes. “I’m available.”

Chloe shook her head, though a reluctant smile tugged at her mouth.

Before Lucifer could add something smug, the television mounted behind the bar changed channels. A familiar piano melody filled Lux, soft enough to catch Chloe’s attention immediately.

Time Will Tell.

Delilah’s song played beneath a news report showing fans showing up outside the hospital. The reporter talked about the public support pouring in, along with the sudden increase in Delilah’s album sales after the attack.

Maze grabbed a glass from the shelf and looked toward Lucifer with a small, spiteful smile. “Looks like your little protégée’s going to cash the check and the studio is going to make big bucks.”

Chloe went still.

Her eyes lifted toward the television, then shifted toward Lucifer as the pieces began sliding together inside her head.

“Oh wow. Delilah gave Grey a watch for the movie Time Will Tell. Get it?”

Lucifer looked toward the screen. “Very poetic.”

“She gave one to someone else, too. But not to the drug dealer...”

Lucifer already knew who the scum was.

"Jimmy Barnes."

The producer had been attached to the soundtrack. He had access to Delilah, the industry, and money. The expensive watch on Eddie Deacon’s wrist had not been a romantic gift. It had been a payment. Barnes was already out of money, so he paid the installment with that watch.

Chloe stood from the bar and reached for her jacket.

Lucifer smiled, slipped the coin into his pocket, and finished his scotch. “Now that sounds considerably more interesting.”

...

[Studio]

The recording studio was inside a converted warehouse near downtown. The building looked empty from the street, but inside, every hallway buzzed with music, shouting assistants, exhausted technicians, and enough expensive equipment to make Karl’s old self wonder how many years of rent the room could cover.

A young boy band was recording in the main booth when Chloe and Lucifer pushed through the studio doors.

Jimmy Barnes stood behind the glass with a headset around his neck, berating one of the singers for missing a note. He turned when the door boomed open, and his face tightened instantly when he saw Lucifer.

“Really?! Wasn’t enough to destroy my wedding and steal my to-be wife, huh?”

'He stole his to-be wife?!' Chloe thought as she looked at Lucifer, but quickly shifted her focus to the task at hand. She walked toward Jimmy with her badge already visible. “How’re the album sales doing?"

Jimmy’s face changed.

The question hit exactly where she wanted it to.

“What album?” he asked, though the hesitation in his voice said he already knew what was coming.

“The soundtrack for Time Will Tell. That YOU produced... Whitney Houston reached the top 10 for album sales after the attack. Michael Jackson hit the stratosphere! I’m not sure you’ll achieve the same heights by having Delilah shot, but that’s still a buttload of royalty checks comin’ your way. Not a bad year for you. Guess you need that cash, huh? Which is why you had to pay the shooter with your watch.”

Lucifer stepped closer, smiling with open contempt. “The watch Delilah gave you. Now that’s just sick, but then you are, so...”

Jimmy’s face turned red beneath the studio lights.

For several seconds, he said nothing. The boy band stood silent behind the glass, their earlier irritation replaced by unease. The technicians stared from behind their equipment, sensing something dangerous in the way Jimmy’s hands began to shake.

Then he moved.

Jimmy grabbed one of the teenage singers by the front of his shirt and pulled him close. A gun appeared in his other hand so quickly that half the room did not understand what had happened until the boy cried out.

Chloe drew her weapon in an instant. “WHOA! Hey! Jimmy?!”

The studio froze.

Jimmy pressed the gun against the boy’s side, his face twisted with rage and panic. “I made her! And she ruined me! She humiliated me! She owes me!”

Lucifer stepped forward.

He did not look scared.

That was the problem.

“You’re not God, Jimmy,” Lucifer said, his voice lowering into something colder. “You didn’t make her. But you did try to destroy her. So I’m going to punish you.”

“Back off, you freak!” Jimmy shouted. “I mean it! I’m not going to prison for that bitch. NO chance.”

Lucifer kept walking.

Every instinct in Karl told him to stop. A gun was pointed at a terrified kid. Chloe stood several feet away with her own weapon raised. Jimmy looked ready to pull the trigger at any moment.

Still, Lucifer could feel the old Devil’s anger rising inside him.

Jimmy had hurt Delilah. He had profited from her suffering. He had tried to have her killed, then attended a wedding the next morning as if her life had meant nothing.

Lucifer wanted him to pay.

Chloe noticed the shift in him and tightened her grip on her gun. “Listen to him! Back off!”

Lucifer did not stop.

“It’s fine,” he said without looking at her. “I told you. I’m immortal.”

Jimmy’s hand jerked upward.

Two gunshots cracked through the studio.

The first bullet shattered a lamp above the mixing console. Sparks rained down across the floor, and the sudden darkness made everyone scream. The second shot struck Jimmy across the upper torso, sending him stumbling backward as the boy tore free and ran toward the sound booth.

Jimmy hit the ground hard.

Lucifer stared at Chloe with fury flashing across his face.

“WHY DID YOU DO THAT?!”

Chloe looked at him as if he had completely lost his mind. “He was going to kill you!”

“No-no-no you just let him off too easy!” Lucifer’s voice rose, echoing across the silent studio. “He needs to suffer! He needs to pay! He needs to feel the pain, not escape it!”

Chloe kept her gun trained on Jimmy, trying to understand how a man could sound genuinely angry that someone had saved his life. “Well, don’t worry. I’m sure where he’s going the pain and punishment’s coming...”

Lucifer’s expression shifted.

The fury faded just enough for something bitter to replace it.

“Actually, no,” he muttered. “It’s not. And why? Because I am here, and...”

Three more gunshots exploded through the studio.

Jimmy had not been dead.

He had rolled toward the fallen weapon while everyone watched Lucifer and Chloe argue. The first bullet struck a wall. The second hit a speaker and sent debris across the floor.

The third ricocheted.

Chloe jerked backward as the round struck the side of her neck, just above the bulletproof vest Lucifer had insisted she wear before entering the studio.

Lucifer’s world stopped.

“No!”

Chloe staggered, one hand flying toward her neck as her knees gave out beneath her. Lucifer caught her before she hit the floor, lowering her carefully onto the ground while the studio around them dissolved into screams and panicked movement.

Her eyes were unfocused when she looked at him.

“I don’t want to die...”

Lucifer pressed one hand over the injury, his face pale beneath the club lights and shattered glass.

“I won’t let you... My father will just have to wait for you.”

More shots rang out from across the room.

Lucifer moved instantly, placing himself between Chloe and Jimmy. The bullets struck his body and flattened against his skin, tearing through his suit without piercing beneath it. He barely noticed.

His eyes remained on Chloe for one more second.

“Wait here a second...”

Then he stood.

Chloe’s vision blurred at the edges.

The room stretched into strange shapes of light and shadow. She saw Lucifer walk toward Jimmy through the smoke and shattered glass. She saw him grab the producer by the throat and slam him against the glass wall of the recording booth hard enough to crack it in a spreading web.

Jimmy struggled against Lucifer’s grip.

“Please,” he gasped. “Don’t kill me.”

Lucifer turned him toward the fractured reflection.

For one brief moment, Chloe saw Lucifer’s face in the broken glass.

It was wrong.

His skin looked stretched across something ancient and furious. His eyes burned through the fractured reflection. The smile was gone, replaced by a darkness that made her stomach twist even through the haze of pain.

“You’re going to wish that was all I did to you,” Lucifer said.

Jimmy screamed.

The sound tore through the studio as Chloe’s vision finally gave out.

Everything went black.

..

..

...

The first thing Chloe noticed was the light.

It hung above her like a white sun, painfully bright against her eyelids. The second thing she noticed was the steady beep of hospital equipment somewhere beside the bed.

Then she heard Lucifer’s voice.

“Well, look who’s back.”

Chloe opened her eyes slowly.

Lucifer sat beside the hospital bed in a dark suit, though his jacket was gone and the shirt beneath it looked slightly wrinkled.

“How long have I been out?”

Lucifer leaned closer, his face completely serious. “Five years.”

“What?!”

His smile appeared immediately.

Chloe glared at him, still groggy from the pain medication. “You’re such an ass.”

Lucifer’s expression softened despite himself. “There she is.”

Chloe tried to sit up, then winced as the movement pulled at the bandage around her neck. Memories returned in fragments. Jimmy, the gunshots, and Lucifer not getting hurt.

“He was firing at you. Why are you not more... dead? You didn't wear the vest."

Lucifer lifted one shoulder. “You're having a very hard time with the immortal thing, aren't you?”

“Must’ve been delirious from the blood loss.”

“Whatever helps you sleep, my dear.”

Chloe watched him for several seconds.

He looked tired.

Lucifer Morningstar always looked polished, confident, and impossible to embarrass. This version of him sat beside her bed with his hands folded together, his gaze dropping whenever she looked too closely.

“What happened to Jimmy?”

Lucifer’s eyes darkened slightly. “He got what he deserved.”

The answer stayed between them.

Chloe could not tell whether Jimmy had survived or Lucifer had killed him. She was also confused about whether the horrifying face she had seen in the shattered glass had been real or a hallucination caused by blood loss.

She did know one thing.

Lucifer had saved her.

“Well, I'm pretty sure I'd be dead if you hadn’t helped me. So, thank you.”

Lucifer blinked as if he had not heard her properly. “I'm sorry. I missed that last part.”

Chloe gave him a small, irritated smile. “Thank you.”

“You're welcome. Besides, you're far too interesting to let die.”

“You saved my life because you find me... interesting?”

“Wildly irritating as well,” Lucifer said, his grin returning despite the shadow in his eyes. “But yes.”

Chloe watched him for another long moment.

“So now what?”

Lucifer brightened as if he had been waiting for the question. “Well, obviously I’ve proven myself as an invaluable crime-fighting tool. You’re a pariah in the department. I think this is the beginning of a beautiful friendship, don’t you?”

Chloe stared at him.

“Who the hell are you?”

Lucifer opened his mouth.

“I told you. I’m...”

“Lucifer!”

Trixie’s voice interrupted him before he could finish.

The door opened, and Trixie rushed into the room with Dan close behind her. The little girl crossed the room at full speed and threw herself against Lucifer before Chloe could even react.

Lucifer smiled as he patted Trixie’s back.

“Now, now. That’s enough, child. Save some of this unpleasantness for your mother.”

Trixie pulled away from him and climbed carefully onto the edge of Chloe’s bed.

Chloe’s eyes filled when she saw her daughter safe and smiling. She reached for Trixie, and the little girl curled against her side carefully.

Dan stood near the door, his expression caught somewhere between relief and exhaustion.

Lucifer looked toward him, then nodded at Chloe. “I think she’s one hell of a homicide detective, don’t you?”

Dan looked at Chloe for a moment before answering. “Yes. She is.”

He stepped closer to the bed. “I’m happy for you.”

Chloe searched his face, uncertain whether she believed him. “Not sure you are, or just relieved I didn’t cause problems again.”

“I’m trying to compliment you.”

“Okay... I’ll take it... thanks. And how ‘bout the department... They happy for me?”

Dan gave a small, uncomfortable smile. “Gettin’ there.”

The answer told Chloe everything.

“You need to be more careful,” Dan added. “You should’ve had backup.”

Lucifer stood so quickly that Trixie looked up at him in surprise.

“She had back up.”

Dan looked toward him.

For a moment, something unspoken passed between them. Dan clearly disliked Lucifer. Lucifer clearly enjoyed that fact far too much. Still, Dan looked toward Chloe again and gave a reluctant nod.

“Thank you. For helping her.”

Lucifer smiled brightly. “That’s hard for you, isn’t it? Not to be a douche.”

Dan’s mouth fell open.

Lucifer was already walking toward the door.

“I’d stay for the family reunion, but it’s giving me IBS. Look forward to seeing you soon, Chloe-”

“I don’t-”

“Bye now. Glad you’re not dead.”

Lucifer left before Chloe could finish.

He paused outside the doorway for half a second and looked back.

Chloe sat surrounded by the people who loved her. Trixie leaned against her shoulder. Dan stood nearby, trying to look less worried than he clearly was. The entire scene felt almost peaceful.

Lucifer stood there quietly.

Karl had promised himself he would stop the story from bleeding the same way twice.

He had saved Delilah.

He had found Chloe.

And despite everything he had done differently, Chloe had still been shot.

His hand tightened around the Pentecostal Coin inside his pocket.

Then Lucifer turned away from the hospital room and walked down the corridor alone.

...

...

[Outside Lux] [Night]

Lucifer pulled his Corvette toward the curb and stepped out with his keys already raised toward the valet. The young man smiled automatically as he reached for them.

Then he froze.

One second, he was moving. The next, his hand hung inches away from the keys while his smile remained trapped across his face.

Lucifer looked toward the street and sighed.

“Damnit. I was hoping you had finally found a hobby that did not involve stalking me across Los Angeles.”

Everything around him had slowed into a strange, distorted silence. Cars crept along the street with their headlights stretched into pale ribbons. A woman in a red dress stood halfway through a laugh near the entrance, though the sound had slowed into a deep and unnatural hum. A loose piece of paper drifted down from somewhere above, barely falling through the air.

Across the street, Amenadiel stood beneath a streetlamp.

Lucifer slipped his hands into his pockets and crossed the road. His brother waited in the center of the empty lane.

He stopped a few feet away.

Amenadiel studied him carefully. “I have been watching you, Lucifer.”

Lucifer raised an eyebrow. “Perv. You should really learn the difference between family concern and deeply unsettling behavior.”

Amenadiel ignored the joke. “I am not sure I like what I see.”

“That makes two of us,” Lucifer said. “I saw you wearing that coat from across the street, and I immediately felt concern for the future of fashion.”

“You are showing restraint,” Amenadiel continued. “Mercy. You saved the singer and protected Chloe Decker. You let that producer live when you could have done far worse.”

Lucifer’s smile faded slightly.

“Scared I’m turning away from the Dark Side, brother?” he asked. “Worried I might finally give you some competition for Father’s favorite child?”

Amenadiel’s eyes narrowed.

“Do not mock this. The human world can be more painful than Hell, Lucifer. Stay here long enough, and you will feel things you have never felt before.”

For a few seconds, Lucifer said nothing.

“Do not threaten me, Amenadiel,” he said quietly. “You will not win.”

A flash of anger crossed Amenadiel’s face. “Then go back.”

Lucifer stared at him for a moment before realization settled across his expression.

“You are the one who feels threatened.”

Amenadiel’s jaw tightened. “My hatred of you grows stronger with every visit.”

Lucifer’s smile returned, colder than before. “Wouldn’t have it any other way, pal. I look forward to eating your heart one day, assuming you ever grow one.”

Amenadiel held his gaze for another long moment before turning away. He walked into the slow-moving traffic and disappeared between the frozen cars. Lucifer went back to his car.

The world snapped back into motion.

The valet blinked, caught the keys, and looked confused when Lucifer gave him a tired pat on the shoulder.

“Try not to scratch her,” Lucifer said.

...

[Inside Lux] [Upstairs penthouse]

Lucifer went straight for the piano.

Maze stood near the bar with a small dagger balanced on the tip of one finger. The blade spun in a silver blur until she caught it cleanly in her palm.

Lucifer dropped onto the piano bench and rested his hands above the keys.

“I sense your disapproval, Maze. What is it this time?”

Maze watched him without smiling.

“I don't understand why you saved another human life.”

Lucifer looked down at the piano keys.

“There is something different about her,” he said. “That is all you need to know for now.”

Maze stepped closer, the dagger disappearing somewhere beneath the folds of her jacket.

“Maybe it is not her that is different.”

Lucifer looked up at her.

“Is this where I ask, whatever do you mean?”

Maze folded her arms across her chest. “Stop caring. You are the Devil. Humans die. Humans hurt each other. Humans make terrible choices, then cry when somebody makes them pay for it."

Lucifer’s fingers settled against the keys.

“Yes,” he said quietly. “I am.”

But the certainty never reached his eyes.

Maze noticed.

Lucifer began to play, letting a slow, eerie version of “Gimme Shelter” drift through the penthouse.

Maze watched him for another minute before turning away.

For the first time in years, she could not decide whether Lucifer was becoming weaker. Or whether he was becoming something far more dangerous.

...

...

[That night] [Docks]

The abandoned warehouse stood near the water, surrounded by rusted shipping containers, broken fences, and the distant sound of waves hitting the dockyard.

Inside, one weak overhead light swayed from a long chain.

Jimmy Barnes sat tied to a wooden chair beneath it. Maze nabbed him from the hospital on Lucifer's order.

His hospital clothes were wrinkled, and his bandaged torso showed through the open front of his shirt. Panic had drenched his face long before Lucifer arrived. He had spent the last several minutes listening to Maze pace through the darkness around him, her boots tapping softly against the concrete floor.

Every time Jimmy tried to ask where he was, Maze gave him a smile that made him regret speaking.

Then the warehouse door opened.

Lucifer walked inside wearing a dark suit and an expression so calm that Jimmy immediately began shaking harder.

“Please,” Jimmy said, his voice breaking as Lucifer came closer. “Please, don't kill me. I saw your face... I saw it... Please, spare me.”

Lucifer stopped in front of him.

“What did you see, Jimmy?”

Jimmy swallowed hard.

“I saw your eyes. Your face changed. You were not human.”

Maze leaned against a nearby support beam, clearly enjoying every second of his fear.

“He is catching on,” she said. “That is adorable.”

Jimmy turned his head toward her. “Please, I will pay you. I have connections. I can get you whatever you want.”

Maze smiled slowly. “I already have everything I want.”

She stepped closer and rested one hand against the back of Jimmy’s chair.

“And tonight, I have you.”

Jimmy flinched so hard that the chair scraped against the floor.

Lucifer sighed and walked around him slowly. His face transformed into his devil form.

"Oh god!" Jimmy pissed his pants as tears rolled down his face.

"Oh please, no more tears," Lucifer said as he stopped right before him. "God wouldn't have sent me if he wanted to save you."

"I'm sorry, please..." Jimmy continued to beg.

"Maze," Lucifer looked up at her. "I want you to torture him in the most brutal way possible, but he must not die. After you're done, ship him to Somalia." He blinked behind Maze.

She could feel his breath on her neck.

He put his hands on her waist and kissed her neck before whispering, "Take your time. There's no rush. After you're done, I'm gonna eat your pussy, and maybe if you squirt, I'll fuck your ass."

With that, Lucifer vanished, leaving Maze wet. She licked her lips as she looked down at Jimmy.
