When I started working on Summer Cultives, I knew making a comic would be hard (and it was, lol). Somewhere along the way, though, I learned something that completely changed my workflow:
Not every panel has to be HD.
As artists, we constantly told ourselves that more detail equals better art. And while your skills naturally improve over time, that mindset can become a trap when you're producing a comic... especially if you're writing, scripting, sketching, inking, coloring, and doing everything else by yourself... just like your favorite masochist tomato 🍅
See the differences?
Emotion
Movement
Surroundings
Environment
Instead of treating every panel like an illustration, I started thinking about my intentions. What is this panel trying to communicate? Once I answer that, it becomes easier to decide how much detail it actually needs. This is the workflow I've gradually developed for my stories, and honestly... I think it has its own charm.
Deadlines will not disappear just because you improve your art. Real challenge comes by learning how to organize your effort. Knowing where to spend your time, where to simplify, and how to keep moving forward without burning yourself out (Which happened to me on Episode 10, sorry again about that 😅)
It doesn't need to be perfect, it just has to be done!
Anyway, this was a little breakdown of my point I really wanted to board, and this Newsletter format was perfect for it!
