Well, that got delayed. Multiple times... It's been an absolutely atrocious last few weeks on several fronts. Lots of stuff hit at once. I don't want to sad-post (various personal issues), but I will share the most infuriating part of last week, since it's loosely tech-related. Rant warning!
AT&T cancelled my home internet account for the dumbest reason imaginable. Yeah I woke up one day to no internet. Didn't get the usual "we're working to restore your service" text like I get during (too frequent) fiber cuts, so I login to the account. Discovered that somehow, through some backend glitch (or backend stupidity) someone else's billing address, email and phone number got added to my account. They have the same last name as me, so I suspect that's how it happened. I guess it showed up on that person's bill so they had AT&T cancel my account. This occurred without warning due to 'fraud'. Now, my credit card was still getting charged the proper amount every month so it's not like they were paying my bill (as far as I know, AT&T could have been double-charging. They are dumb enough). Seems like an easy fix, right? Well AT&T being the barely-functional tangled ball of bureaucracy they are, cannot simply 'un-cancel' my account and re-enable my existing modem (despite being on the phone with the customer service rep for 3 hours trying). No, they have to set up a brand-new account, with a different modem. Oh and they can't get it here for 5 days. So I spent 5 days struggling to work through my phone's hotspot, limping my home's smart devices over a wi-fi bridge to my phone. I'm absolutely baffled that this type of thing can even happen. Felt like I was taking crazy pills. Wondering if they're liable for data leakage as I ended up with the other person's info (and I assume they got mine). I do not have even the slightest hint of how this mix-up occurred. The only upside is the rep placed significant discounts on my new account which makes the bill around $22/mo for the next 12 months. Still, I didn't think it was humanly possible for me to consider going back to Comcast. It was slow and expensive, but at least highly reliable. If AT&T fails me again, I most definitely will...
Anyways, I finally got this video done. Boy did it have some challenges on its own... Lost some footage to equipment failures. I don't like to give spoilers though.
Hope my tale of woe doesn't dampen anyone's mood. Here are the links:
