Hi, I’m Noah, and some of you might already know me. After all, I do most of the work on the newsletters! But I haven’t really talked about myself much, so that’s what today’s Daily Dose of Life will be about.
Something I want to talk about is my life on the boat and some of its challenges.
Living on a boat is absolutely a luxury, sure. But it isn’t always perfect. Sometimes I can’t make friends because of the language barrier in Greece. Other times, my friends are anchored somewhere else. You need pretty perfect timing to be able to spend time with your friends.
Even so, it’s still a really amazing lifestyle. For starters, if you’re not in a marina, you can literally just throw on some swimming gear and jump straight into the sea! Then there’s the exploring—sailing across the ocean and visiting places you’ve never seen before. You can use a paddleboard, take the dinghy out, and discover hidden beaches and coves. Everywhere you go, you get to see the wonders of Greece!
Now you might be thinking, “But what about my pets at home?” Well, just take them with you!
In my opinion, having a companion aboard makes things even better. You can take them on adventures, bring them to the beach, and explore together. Personally, I’d recommend pets like parrots or cats (not both—definitely not both!). Of course, you can take other pets too—just make sure they can swim!
Then there’s the food.
If you’re travelling the world on a sailing boat, you’re not going to do all that on an empty stomach! You might be craving a gyros from a souvlaki shop in Greece, some crispy street-food pancakes from Thailand, or even a spaghetti bolognese in an Italian restaurant. The choice is yours!
Of course, to do all of that, you’ll need some skills too. Things like tying up the boat, dealing with the occasional engine problem, and steering the boat all take practice. That’s why I’d recommend getting proper training first. After all, you can’t just jump straight into the liveaboard lifestyle—you need to take things one step at a time.
With all that said, while the liveaboard life is awesome, it isn’t for everyone. The social differences, the distance from friends and family, and the lack of certain work opportunities can make things difficult at times. But it might also be the best thing that ever happens to you.
