Eric let out a shallow breath as he said, “Core-cracked.”

“What?” Naomi asked, wheeling about.

“Thirteen years left,” Eric said. “The timer accelerated.”

Peter stopped in place at the edge of the safety bubble that would have led to the path to the next chamber—a massive series of glaciers that would require climbing the hostile terrain. “Seriously?” he asked incredulously. “So what’s the timeline look like now?”

Naomi tapped her bracer a few times and a holographic image popped up, showing a screen that flickered in front of everyone.

70th of Fall, 1263 - Today’s date

20th of Spring, 1264 - Diplomatic meeting with Bhlast and Flescion.

90th of Summer, 1266- International tensions increase as Empire of Pwish sends fleets north and Petty Kingdoms of Diaphan, Nairos, and Gorrund intercept.

1st of Spring, 1267- Full World War breaks out.

90th of Winter, 1277 1276 1275 - The Titan breaks free. We are not sure if the day changes because of the year.

Shannon inhaled sharply. “Jeesh. Why are we worrying so much? That’s so far off. We’ve got plenty of time.”

Eric looked at her and felt irritated. “The issue is that there are people accelerating the Titan’s wake-up cycle. Twice in under a season? That’s quick. I don’t know if this happened last time, and if someone else is pushing it back. It’s been less than ninety days, and we’ve lost two years.”

Indedroma spoke in everyone’s minds.

[We push the timer back if you clear the Twilight Depths.]

Peter pointed at the glaciers ahead. “Then that’s what we do. We push ourselves. Yeah, we might need to rest here and there, but we go at it hard. It’s like we’re training for the championship match—no letting up, no backing down.”

Naomi tapped her bracer and the screen vanished. “Agreed. We will have to tend to duties in Trok with our new families and stabilize the kingdom given the new monarch, plus fortify it as best we can to survive an impending war—but a war won’t matter if whoever keeps accelerating the Titan’s awakening can wake it up before that war ever comes.” She walked up next to Peter. “I don’t have any type of mapping software yet, but just looking at the glaciers itself, I think I can see a good path to climb up.”

Eric walked up next to them. “I’m full up on mana. Want me to take the lead again and burn handholds? We don’t need climbing picks since we all have these neat dragon-armor forms with claws.”

“Sounds good,” Shannon replied as she walked up behind them. “Bigger concern, what if we get attacked while climbing?”

Peter held up his shield and expended a Sigil, and the dome of silver light flashed around them. “Then I tank the damage transfer, and we fight them off as best we can. Let’s move. Glaciers, then acid waterfall rock climb, and after that? I think we’re at the end.”

Eric nodded and followed the man as they began to run along the path. The ice shards that rained down from above, massive spears the size of ballistae rounds, slammed down into Peter’s protective shell and splintered upon impact, cracking and fragmenting into bits. As soon as the huge walls of ice came into range, he began firing off Blackflame Evocations. The spheres of blackflame flickered into existence right in front of him: orbs of black, sparking with a white center, and limned by the blue-and-purple of raw mana, which then vanished and reappeared upon the icy barrier before them, burning pockets that could easily accommodate hands and feet. Eric tracked them in a line going right up the wall of the first glacier.

As they got closer, he could feel the billowing cold flowing off of the massive chunk of ice. Eric knew he wouldn’t be able to use many of his Blackflame focused Skills or Rotes, because it would likely melt more of the object they would be climbing. He would have to rely upon his basic damaging Rote, and if he did use any Skills, they had to be the new ones from the recently acquired Conduit Class.

If we do fight on the climb, he thought as they reached the end of the trail and entered a protective film that sheltered them from the cascading ice storm between chambers, then this might be extremely difficult.

Naomi scanned to the left, then the right. “It looks like the protection goes all the way up, so no need to worry about being hit from environmental effects. But, I bet Shannon is right about being attacked.”

Peter shrugged, slung his shield onto his back, and his gauntlets sharpened as the fingers elongated into claws. “Well, we climb. Eric, you’re in the lead.”

Eric moved to the front and dug his hand, which thanks to Cinderscale Shroud still covering his body, and Bristling Bastion which also coated his body, meant that he was fully encased in a protective shell of crackling black ash and cinder with a draconic theme. His gauntlets that hardly weighed anything given his muscle mass correlated directly to his mana reservoir were claws that dug into the ice, which, thanks to his earlier firing off of Rotes, were neat, easy-to-slip-into hand and footholds.

He began to climb, and the going was easy. He could feel the cool surface beneath him, but thanks to the layer of Skill-based and Rote-focused armor layers, he didn’t suffer any chill effect. Unlike his allies, he no longer had a heat-supplying orb that he could shove into his clothes or armor to keep him nice and toasty—but that was fine. He could make his own heat if needed.

The glacier began to rumble under his grip, and Shannon shouted, “Danger sense is going off! Something is coming!”

“No shit!” Peter shouted back. “But where?”

Eric couldn’t figure that out, either, and was trying to discern the origin of the movement. He got his answer a moment later, as the glacier directly in front of him exploded, and a toothy maw enveloped him. He was inside a monster’s jaws, and surrounded by teeth that circled like saw blades, biting into and grinding against his Bristling Bastion . . . which triggered retaliatory strikes.

Bang! Bang! Bang!

The eruptions of knockback damage shot off, and whatever creature had tried to eat Eric retracted into the glacier, bringing him along with it, but ultimately spit him out. Eric felt the stacks of Embersoul Blackflame Blaze begin to tick up, as is outgoing damage increased, incoming damage increased, mana regeneration increased, movement speed increased, reaction time improved, and processing speed accelerated.

He was inside of an ice tunnel, and could see the flickering, black and white flames dancing upon the brown and black, grotesque, almost earthworm-looking monster that had tried to devour him whole. The thing’s mouth was easily ten-feet wide and just as tall, and Eric saw no eyes from his angle so he assumed it relied on vibrations to move about.

Not hesitating for a second, Eric grabbed his Focus Grimoire from his belt and surged his mana through it. The implement amplified all outgoing damage that went through it by eighty percent, and as he activated another Blackflame Evocation, the pages fluttered open and ignited with a surging, violent fury as they burned without being consumed by the blaze. The three orbs of Blackflame pooled up from the pages, like ink dripping from pages but as if the gravity were reversed, and the spitting, hissing orbs of annihilating primal fury vanished, appeared inside the thrashing worm’s mouth, and impacted.

Fwoosh!

The impacts sent more of the damage-over-time trait alight, and the monstrosity thrashed, sending cracks and fissures up the ice walls. The monster turned to the ice wall to its left, and tunneled away.

Eric looked back toward the front of the glacier, and saw Peter had climbed up to that point. “You good?” Peter asked. He had a bit of blood coming out from under his helmet—presumably from damage transferred from the Blackflame Evoker to him.

“I’m fine,” Eric replied. “The thing tried to bite off more than it could chew—”

Something cracked out of the wall to Eric’s side, and he barely turned in time to see another one of the monsters burst through the tunnel and slam into him. Even his newly installed Tarrasque Nervous System improving his reaction time and giving him incredible speed wasn’t enough to let him dodge. Instead of trying to eat him, it only slammed him—all thousands of pounds of force, ramming him into the opposite wall of the tunnel. Eric was smushed, and all of the Bristling Bastion cracked, completely being consumed, and retaliating.

Boom!

The impacts that shot out sent the newly arrived worm-monster flying right back into the tunnel it had come out of, and Eric was unharmed. But, he heard Peter let out a grunt, and glancing over, Eric saw a large pool of blood as the man got into the tunnel and was curled up on the ground. Eric immediately used Blacksteel Mending, using stored-up, overflow mana from the active burns on his foes to fuel the healing.

Peter got up quickly and to his feet, grabbing his mace and shield. He didn’t say anything in thanks, just nodded and moved toward Eric. Shannon was just getting up the cliff behind him and into the tunnel.

Eric turned his attention to the worm-monster now in front of him, and fired off more of his damaging Rote, hitting it and igniting more of the applications of his damage-over-time Trait.

Shannon shouted, “Below!”

Eric immediately jumped to his right, and not a second too soon, as where he had been standing, a worm shot up through the ground. He was able to get a Blackflame Evocation off on the thing as it shot past, and Peter was able to get a swing at it. The hit must have been very powerful—but then Eric remembered that Peter’s new Class he had Polymerized, Resonator, was all about taking the damage he had suffered and applying it to his outgoing damage.

The Paladin’s hammer strike exploded the worm’s midsection, sending chunks of flaming gore out that splattered all over the icy tunnel and coating Eric’s body before they seared away to ash. The top-half of the worm kept moving, and the bottom half withered away to ash, leaving a hole in the ground. “Fuck you!” Peter shouted in triumph.

Behind the group, Eric saw Naomi clear the climb and get into the tunnel. “What’s going on up here?” she asked.

“Boring worms,” Shannon said. “I mean they’re boring through things, not that they aren’t entertaining.” Naomi moved over to Shannon, but the latter held up a hand as she unlimbered her crossbow. “No, wait.” Shannon raised her crossbow, and with a rapid series of trigger pulls, fired off several bolts that stuck into the walls of the tunnel. Then, the bolts began to glow a deep purple. “Netherspike Pyre,” she said proudly. “Now the Netherdark Ichor will apply and do the slow when things get within the AOE—and it goes through walls.”

Eric felt his DOTs still ticking up, and knew that a worm was in range of Shannon’s Skill, as one had to be for his Trait to still be active during its two-and-a-half second burn duration, to then be refreshed by Naomi’s damage-over-time Skill, and set off their infinite-feedback loop. “One is close!” he shouted as he scanned for a target. But, the walls were opaque.

Naomi ran over, past Eric, and toward the middle of the tunnel. “The end of the chamber would be at the top of the glacier. I can use a big blast to make use of a sloping tunnel to follow. Eric, hit my receiving beacon.” The back end of her mana-acceleration-blaster, a shoulder-mounted, futuristic-looking cannon, opened up like a blooming flower. Several branches of metal spread apart, and a film extended between them. “Any elemental energy.”

“Can it handle Blackflame?” Eric asked.

[Probably not. But, you can use raw mana now, and then Naomi can convert that to electricity through her Makerspark.]

Eric spent one of his Sigils—going down to ten—and activated Conduit’s Wrath. As part of activating the Skill, he expended half of his body’s own mana reservoir, amplifying the damage even more. A surging torrent of deep, purple-blue energy tore down his left arm, into the pages of his grimoire which illuminated with the same glow, show up a foot above the tome, and then fired forward in a massive beam.

Naomi’s MAB collected the energy, which condensed down and caused the weapon to glow with a white-hot heat. “Jesus Christ, Eric,” she said. “Okay, that’s enough! You’re going to overload it!”

Eric cut off the Skill early. “Okay, sorry. No mana next time. Just the Skill itself.”

Note to self, he thought, A Skill that lists ‘massive damage’ is a huge amount, and I might not have to add mana on top.

Indedroma added in his mind and his alone:

[Well, you had Mana Burn going as well, so that additional temporary reserve was going into it.]

Ah, right, I forgot about that since I don’t feel it in me. Is there any way to make it more visible, rather than just in my Paths Within and only Paths-side?

[If I did, it would be a heavy visual indicator to others as well.]

In that case, probably not a good idea. Better to be able to hide my power from others.

Naomi’s weapon’s ‘flower’ backside closed, and she turned to her left. The weapon on her shoulder auto-aimed, angling up at a thirty-degree arc, and fired.

Szzt!

A ten-foot-diameter beam of raw, white lightning blasted out, sending a crackling line through the glacier, carving a perfectly circular hole that the group could walk through. Her armor was fizzling and popping as arcing light-blue energy danced across its surface, and her MAB hung limp from her shoulder. Naomi looked back at the group. “All clear—”

Shannon barely shouted, “Look out!” but Naomi didn’t have the reaction time. A boring worm monster slammed into her from below, crushing her against the ceiling. Thankfully, Peter’s protection was on her, and instead of Naomi suffering the injury, the man behind Eric collapsed the ground and let out a pained wheeze as blood spurted out of him.

Eric immediately turned and used the remaining mana in his body to activated Blacksteel Mending, and drew on his Mana Skin to refill his primary repository to full. He was able to get Peter back on his feet, and by the time he turned to Naomi, he saw her still pinned to the ceiling, holding the worm’s mouth at bay as it tried to crunch down on her. The power-armor-looking Skill that protected her seemed to give some level of strength enhancement, but Eric could hear servos whirring and something metallic creaking.

Shannon’s crossbow fired off right next to him, and several drill-tipped bolts whizzed past Eric, drilled into the monster, and then detonated.

Bam!

The monster was sent hurtling from the impact, and Naomi was dropped down. She landed on her feet and hands, then got up and rushed over to the group. Shannon didn’t let up her attack, swapping to mana-created bolts which didn’t cost her ammunition yet still hit and applied her DOT Trait.

Eric joined her in the assault, using Blackflame Evocation through his grimoire, and the duo hit the still-reeling worm with enough damaging Rotes and bolts, enough damage-over-time, that it perished and withered to ash. Eric felt the rush of warmth and refreshing cooling energy as twenty percent of his health and mana was restored. “One down,” he said.

Peter went past the duo, “Let’s go,” he said, voice low and in a guttural growl. “We need to move. They have home field advantage.”

“Still hurt?” Eric asked.

“I’m good enough,” Peter replied.

Eric used another Blacksteel Mending regardless, and Peter looked back at him, gave him a nod, and Eric just said, “I have tons of mana regeneration. I can heal for days as long as you have the mana to receive it. Just ask.”

“Alright.”

The group followed Peter up the tunnel Naomi had carved.

In the end, Eric thought as he kept close to the Paladin, my build ended up seeing me as a pseudo-Warden of sorts in the group. I don’t have shields and barriers, but I heal plenty.

[I told you to trust me with going all-in on Reaper with your build.]

You did, and I shouldn’t have ever doubted your wisdom.

Shannon shouted out, “Something else is coming! Not sure where.”

Eric still felt his stacks of buffs ramping up, and knew that one worm that had entered the Netherdark Scout’s damaging aura was alive somewhere, still suffering from both her and his DOTs.

Peter stopped in place, then raised his shield, and shouted, “Everyone back!”

Eric didn’t question the instruction and threw himself backward, tumbling into Naomi. But he grabbed her to keep her from falling. Shannon slid backward down the tunnel and steadied herself.

A worm emerged from the tunnel to Peter’s right, and the man managed to get his shield in the way as the monsters had seemed to abandon the ‘try and eat them’ method. Instead, they were going for the ramming method. And that was the wrong move to make with Peter, as he was the Vanguard of the group. Instead of moving, Peter stayed put.

And, the harm he had suffered for Naomi earlier was still, apparently, stored, as when he slammed back, his shield carried the impact, as the worm’s head exploded, coating the tunnel it had emerged from in gore. “Take that, fucker!” Peter shouted.

“Good job!” Shannon shouted.

That one wasn’t suffering from burns, Eric thought. It would be ashes otherwise.

Shannon pushed both Eric and Naomi from behind. “Move!” she shouted.

Once more, Eric didn’t argue or complain. He just moved. Naomi didn’t say anything against the instruction either, as Shannon’s hazard sense Trait was accurate thus far. The ground exploded behind them, and Eric glanced back, seeing the still-ablaze and purple-limned form of one of the worms who had just tried to slam into him and Naomi.

There was a great chance for them here; he saw an opportunity to get the group clear of the tunnel, and destroy this enemy, all in one go. Eric opened his mouth and shot off a Blackflame Breath

Bang!

He, Naomi, and Shannon, all went skidding up the tunnel—slamming into Peter who was carried up along with them, as the worm Eric had targeted was obliterated by the area-of-effect cone-shaped explosion. The group went skidding along the smooth ice, up to the top of the glacier, thanks to the tunnel Naomi had carved.

“The hell was that?!” Shannon asked as she extracted herself from the tangle.

Eric got out from under Naomi’s leg and stood up. “A Mana Burn empowered Rote,” Eric replied. “I gave it a bit of extra oomph,” he added.

Naomi got up, and then Peter got up last. “Good,” Naomi said. “That place is a death trap.”

Eric took in their environment. They were on top of the large glacier, still covered by the faint, shimmering, purple dome that covered and protected them from the falling icicles and razor shards that would cut into them between chambers. But, there was a good three-hundred feet of open, icy terrain between them and the trail that led to the next chamber a couple thousand feet farther beyond that—a stone mountain interspersed with waterfalls filled with purple, green, and orange hues of hissing liquid he assumed was acid.

Peter crouched down into a ready stance. “Do you feel that?”

“Feel what?” Eric asked.

Peter knelt and put his shield-hand to the ground. “Maybe it’s part of Resonator?” He stood up. “I’m not sure.”

Naomi tapped something on her wrist, and the back part of her armor separated and a little drone flew off down the ice tunnel. “It’ll go get the ashes and put them into our Monster Parts Bag,” she said. “Let’s keep moving.”

Peter took the lead and the group headed toward the trail that would take them out of the chamber, with Shannon a step behind, followed by Naomi, and with Eric at the back. His mana had fully refilled, but all of his stacks of his buff had faded. Peter stopped again, and knelt once more. “Something big is moving under us.”

Eric was about to reply, but his nerves screamed at him to move, and a Sigil was expended automatically from [Flareburst] on his Flashstep—dropping him from ten down to nine—as he shot forward. Instinctively, he grabbed Shannon and Naomi as he passed them, feeling his arms wrench in their sockets, and ended at his maximum movement.

Behind him, where he had been, a fifty-foot-wide worm creature had emerged where he had been. It would have easily eaten him in one bite, and judging by the automatic use of the Sigil, it would have killed him.

Thank the depths I spent an Ember on that evolution, Eric thought.

Peter wheeled around to face the thing as it shrunk down to the size of a semi-truck and seemed to roll over, revealing thousands of skittering legs like a centipede would have, and from the inside of the mouth that was lined with razor-sharp teeth like a vortex of blending blades, grabbing appendages flicked out, covered with spikes that could grab prey and drag it in. The Paladin’s body flared with a silver light as he faced off against their foe, and as one of those spike flicked out at him, he took the hit on his shield and countered with a tremendous strike of his hammer that cracked the limb and sent it slamming into the ground.

Shannon wheeled with Eric and the duo began blasting. Her with her mana-based bolts that applied her Netherdark Ichor, spreading the purple miasma of poison that slowed and dealt damage over time in the form of an insidious corrupting ichor, and Eric with his Blackflame Evocation, which he focused inside the monster’s mouth when he could and onto the grabbing appendages when he couldn’t, igniting his Blackflame Blazes and dealing his DOT in the form of an incinerating, burning annihilation. The two Traits fueled one another, and the infinite damage feedback loop was active. Eventually, the monster would perish.

Naomi’s drone flew over the enemy as the woman’s MAB began to fire off lightning arcs that zapped the monster while Peter caught blows of the pincers on his shield and held the frontline. Occasionally, the zaps would arc to Peter, but didn’t seem to harm him—if anything, he moved a bit quicker, and his hammer-swings were trailing arcs of electricity and the blows echoed with the sound of roaring thunder when they impacted. The cannon on the other shoulder auto-aimed and fired a sphere of crimson that splashed onto Peter, aerosolized, and then sucked up into him.

Eric glanced at Naomi and said, “Don’t spend Healing Potions. I can direct healing—”

“Wasn’t that,” Naomi said, her voice dripping with anticipation. “It’s something else. A little thing I concocted that Peter asked for. Something he wanted called ‘rage fuel’.”

Eric saw the effect near instantly—Peter’s body, just like his first time in the Twilight Depths, began to glow with the blood-red aura of his Reaver Class, and his swings began to impart more devastating impacts as he started to destroy the grabbing pincer-like limbs with his hits. Eric asked, "Pharmaceutical concoction?”

“Basically a synthetic cathinone,” Naomi replied. “Bath salts like the guy in Florida who ate someone’s face. Obviously I worked with someone to compound a formula that doesn’t cause someone to go crazy or some shit. This is like a temporary physical boost.”

I hope you know what you’re doing with it, Eric added mentally.

[It’s future planning for the war. Combat stimulants for frontline troops. Naomi was talking with your father-in-law about the rail system, and the topic of drug use in warfare came up. This is like a test run.]

Eric shrugged. Well, we can heal Peter easily enough, and he’s probably the most durable Vanguard in Trok to test it on.

Shannon kept firing off her mana based bolts. She sounded concerned as she said, “It’s safe, right?”

“Theoretically,” Naomi replied.

Eric elected to stop using Blackflame Evocation, began to envision his breath shape as a line that would go over Peter. He then used Blackflame Breath, and directed the stream of destructive force over his ally, pouring the torrent right into the monster.

The huge creature had been bashing at Peter, tendrils slamming into him, his shield, or flickering barriers. Peter was riposting, swinging his hammer back at it, crushing the pincers that would then snap back into the mouth. After seemingly tired of exchanging blows with Peter and taking the beating of a lifetime, the worm tried to retreat into the ice tunnel it had carved. But Peter did something that covered the monster in a red cloud of sparkles, and it rushed the Paladin with reckless abandon.

A taunt of some kind, Eric reasoned. Probably something like Animus Aura.

Eric was familiar with that; it worked on monsters and mana beasts, but not people unless they were absolutely dumb as bricks and bottom-of-the-barrel when it came to IQ. They had to be on the same level as animals for it to take effect.

The monster threw itself onto Peter, trying to crush the man with its mass, but Peter was fast enough to move aside, and slammed his hammer into the side of its mouth, sending the thing jiggling to the left.

After what must have been a solid thirty seconds of applying damage, scorching, pincushioning with mana bolts, and applying poison and burns, the monster had enough and succumbed—turning to ashes.

Braces vibrated, and Eric let out a little sigh of relief. “Chamber cleared,” he said.

Peter turned to the group, and the red aura faded. “Test successful!” he shouted. Then, he leaned over, vomited, and took a knee. Eric made to move over, but Peter stood up and waved them all off as he walked over. “I’m good! Just had rumbly guts.”

Naomi’s drone detached from her back, grabbed the ashes, and brought them back. “So, how’d it feel?”

“Honestly? Like when I found out the guy who killed my sister wasn’t getting the death sentence,” Peter replied. “I was so angry, I just couldn’t think of anything except wanting to kill what was in front of me. But, I didn’t have a sense of . . . like when I was on that first floor of the Twilight Depths, and really in like a bloodlust mode. I knew my limits?”

“Perfect!” Naomi said as she tapped her bracer as if she was taking notes. “Excellent. Rage fuel needs a few tweaks then for duration, and hopefully we can figure out why you vomited after—”

Shannon interrupted, “Why didn’t you two tell us we were going to be testing drugs in here?”

Peter looked at her. “Didn’t want you to worry at all.”

“It’s a good idea,” Eric said. “Any advantage we can give Trok and its allies in the war to come is going to help. Until we know how the corrupt Titan’s forces are accelerating its awakening, we have to be able to leave the kingdom on its own during the war—in the event we have to prioritize the mega dungeons.” Eric grimaced. “If Trok has to be sacrificed to save the world, we have to do it.”

“At least you’re willing to sacrifice your new home for the world,” Shannon said. “Shows your priorities are in the right place.”

Naomi lowered her bracer. “Well, that’s why we need every advantage we can get. Combat drugs and stimulants that have little or no downside? Hell yes. Transportation network? Well, logistics win wars. If we can set up the rail network across Trok, and then a single line that goes into Bhlast, connecting to their capital, and then their primary port? We’ll have a massive advantage.”

“Why one line?” Peter asked.

“Safety,” Eric said. “Only one means of egress that can be controlled in and out of the kingdom, in the event Bhlast turns hostile in the future.”

“Exactly,” Naomi replied. “Ideally we can get world peace forever or something like it, but I’m a realist—that’s unlikely to happen.”

“Makes sense,” Shannon said. She pointed at the trail. “Let’s walk and level. The sooner we get done, the sooner we get Dungeon Cores. Oh, and when we get out of here, we can go and get some new Gear!”

“Why new Gear when we can upgrade Body Enhancements?” Peter asked as he fell in step behind the group.

Eric followed up the rear of the group, and he brought his bracer up to his eye level as he looked at the readout of messages.

[You have leveled up!]

[You have 3 level-ups to process.]

[Blackflame Evoker 178, 179, 180.]

[Choose a Skill and Trait to increase. Then repeat this twice.]

Let’s put the Ranks into Mana Conversion for the Skill, and Mana Burn for the Trait.
