Peter led the way, with everyone else in tow right behind him, walking along the narrow dirt trail between the mushrooms and glowing-moss-covered rocks that were strewn about in a tumble. Eric was scanning the environment constantly, not worried about what might be in front of or behind them. The mega dungeon might have had a consistent setup: chamber, travel to the next, rinse and repeat. But, he was ready for any change.
The fungal growth overhead condensed, becoming a tunnel that glittered with spores, and Peter let out a massive sneeze. “Fucking allergies,” he muttered.
“Not quite,” Eric corrected. “It means your immune system recognizes something foreig—” he let out a sneeze of his own, and the moment the after-effect of relief came onto him, he also felt a cool sensation along his temples. Immediately, he used Blacksteel Healing, and the cold vanished.
Depths damn it, he thought. The mushroom tunnel here is part of the chamber.
He fired off a series of Blacksteel Healing at each person, and then held his grimoire above his head, and manifested Blackflame Breath, making the spread cover an area above them, burning away the spores. The Rote was draining his mana, and he barked out, “We need to move!”
Peter picked up the pace at the front, and the rest followed. Eric could hear popping noises from above, behind his flames, and assumed that the spores were trying to do whatever job they had—whether to injure or just weaken—but to no avail, as his veil of fire was enough to keep it all from reaching them.
They emerged from the tunnel and into a stone cavern, and Eric let the Rote fade away. The walls were glistening with a slick, mucous-like liquid that oozed from between crevices.
“The fuck was that?” Naomi asked. “Not a chamber.”
“It probably was part of this one,” Eric replied as activated Reaper’s Flamesight and scanned for hostiles. But, no heat signs showed up, and he didn’t see any vital organs anywhere aside from his companions.
Shannon walked up next to Eric and said, “Huh, goop walls.” Then, she pointed at the obvious tunnel further ahead. “We can just keep going. But, I bet this is a chamber.”
Eric was about to reply in the affirmative, but the goop along the walls began to congeal into a creature that brought back horrid memories from the White Keep. Without even thinking, he fired off a Blackflame Evocation, and five orbs blipped into existence above the grimoire, vanished, appeared above the slime, and formed spears which impaled it and ignited his Blackflame Blaze—though he wasn’t sure how effective it would be, given a Pyromancer had died while wreathed in flame: consumed by one of these things.
Eric said, “Deathslime. Don’t let it touch you.”
Peter’s silver barrier popped into existence over each person, hugging close to their bodies to redirect damage. Two more of the slimes congealed from the wall and ceiling, respectively, and the ceiling one plopped down onto Peter. He got his shield in the way, but that didn’t help at all, as it just encased him, moving around the barrier. He tried to say something, but no words came out of the muck.
Shannon immediately fired off mana-based bolts that hit the one covering Peter, and Netherdark began to spread. Eric fired off a Blackflame Evocation, and spread his damage-over-time Trait as well. “Just hit it?” Shannon asked.
“Yeah,” Eric replied as he turned to face the one coming from the left. “Tag each with your DOT. Get the infinite combo going so I can transfer health and mana to all of us.” Shannon did so, while Eric fired off yet another Rote to tag the last one.
Naomi, in the back, was kneeling, rummaging around in a bag. “Eric, are they acid, or base?”
“Alkaline,” Eric replied as the deathslimes on the sides surged forward to try and encompass him. He moved forward, and barely got past the two monsters that moved quite rapidly. “They’re a strong base—” his words were cut off as he put all of his effort into responding to his nervous system’s warning of something hazardous getting close. He dove forward, coming up in a roll, and dodged the falling slime that joined the fray later than the rest.
Peter’s body shone bright silver with bronze sparks, and he exploded with that same light, sending the slime flying off of him: some bits of its gelatinous form flew to the sides, but the main bulk stayed together and was forcefully removed by the shockwave. “Fuck that,” he said. “Big AOE, incoming!” He raised his hammer, and it glowed a deep silver that expanded, as a spectral version widened above the group. When he brought it down, a loud clang echoed out, and the slimes all wobbled, then parts of their bodies sloughed off.
“Good damage,” Eric said as he kept running to the far side of the cavern, taking two of the slimes’ attention with him. “Keep hitting with magic!” Then, a thought hit him. He stopped, wheeled around, and activated Mana Drain. A thread of blue-purple, with black and white sparks surging along the length, connected his grimoire and the leading deathslime that had chased him down. But, the effect was immediate, as the slime began shrinking as bits of it evaporated.
They’re mana constructs, Eric thought triumphantly. Just drain the mana, and they are not a threat—
His thoughts were interrupted as the slime he was targeting jumped forward, and he barely dodged to his left. Not wanting to risk any type of caustic injuries, he used a Sigil to activate Blackmana Shield. The film of black and white flames surged into existence around him. The slime he was draining was close enough to manifest a pseudopod and with lightning-quick speed, faster that Eric could keep up with, slapped him.
The mana drop in his primary reservoir from taking the hit for him was tremendous, and he knew that it could only survive three hits before he tapped into his Mana Skin. He shouted out between dodging, “Can I AOE?”
Peter shouted back, “Two seconds!” So, Eric focused on dodging, and when Peter shouted, “Go!” Eric spent a Sigil—down to nineteen—and activated Combustion Trigger. The mighty, tremendous explosion filled the area, burning the slime he had been focusing on draining the mana of to nothingness. The other slime that was chasing him down was knocked down to half health, judging from the size of it, and more Blackflame Blazes lit up along its form. Sparing a quick glance to his allies, Eric saw that they were just safely sitting inside Peter’s bubble, which was cracked and flickering with Blackflame. Two slimes were trying to get in, but unable to get through the defensive barrier.
As if in response to his unasked question, Peter rapidly said, “Evolved it to stop people I don’t want.”
Eric had to focus all of his attention on the one attacking him, and used Mana Drain on it as he kept avoiding pseudopods that manifested, shot out, and barely missed. Finally, after a good ten seconds of the exchange, it withered away to nothingness. Eric could turn his attention to his allies, and he activated Mana Drain once more on the smaller of the two deathslimes. The battle was a foregone conclusion, and within thirty seconds, both foes were dead.
Naomi stood up and was holding a sphere. “Get over here,” she said. “Eyes closed, mouth closed, plug your nose.”
Eric moved fast, a rapid dash, as he didn’t feel his bracer vibrating despite the lack of foes. He got inside Peter’s barrier, which seemed to allow certain creatures entry, and Naomi threw the sphere above them all. It exploded with a light, yellow powder that settled onto all of them—Eric made sure to will his Blackmana Shield to let the particles in.
Naomi said, “This is just an acidic powder. As long as it doesn’t get into your mucous membranes, it won’t do anything. But, it’ll stop—”
Naomi stopped speaking and looked down at her bracer. “Fuck me. Primal force challenge.”
“Not here,” Shannon replied as she glanced down at her bracer. “Just you, girl.”
Eric saw movement to his left, and noted a phantasmal-appearing version of the goop—deep green in hue—that began to coalesce. Naomi rushed over to the gap in the wall and began grabbing things that he couldn’t see.
“What’s she doing?” Peter quietly asked.
Naomi rapid-fired back, saying, “Taking the chemicals here and figuring out the necessary reaction to keep the room from flooding!” At her words, the goop spurted out, coating her, and she let out a little shriek of surprise before redoubling her efforts mixing invisible flasks in mid-air; Eric recognized the movement of swirling chemicals in containers by heart.
Indedroma spoke in all but Naomi’s minds.
[She is taking on her primal force challenge, which requires her to use chemical components only she can interact with to stop a flood that only she has to deal with. Peter, your shield can still protect her, but breathing might be an issue if the room fills up.]
Eric glanced back to the mushroom tunnel and saw a similar, prismatic film over it. Walking over, he put his hand through without resistance, and looking down, saw the green goop on the floor stopped at the entrance. He went back to Naomi and said, “Don’t jump. Giving you something to help.” He took the Wavewender Choker off and put it around her neck, where it sunk below the armor. “Not sure if this stuff can be breathed through, but it should help if worst comes to worst.”
She grunted in affirmation and kept moving her hands around, grabbing invisible instruments, mixing, splashing the resulting concoction—also invisible to Eric—onto the wall. “It’s not working!” she shouted, panic in her voice.
Peter came over and knelt next to her. “You got this.”
Shannon also came over and added, “You’re so smart. This is nothing for you.”
“Just shut up!” Naomi replied. “Let me focus!”
Eric backed away and prepared to use his healing, just in case. The phantasmal green liquid that he didn’t feel but could see was up to his ankles, still filling the chamber.
I hope she gets it figured out, Eric thought. I can bring her back to life if she fails, but that’s gonna be a lot of Sigils all at once.
Eric stood there, tense, with his allies, waiting for Naomi to solve a problem that only she could tackle. It was a long, two minutes, where the phantasmal liquid got up to waist height. But, finally, Naomi shouted, “Got it!” and the liquid vanished. She stood up, pumped her fist into the air, and said, “Fuck yes!”
Eric walked over and asked, “How many of your primal force resource?”
She turned and he could see her grin under the visor. She grabbed the choker—which rose to the surface of her armor—and handed it to Eric, and he quickly affixed it onto his neck. “I got four! Would’ve gotten eight, but the fucking chemicals kept spilling.”
Shannon walked over and gave her a hi-five. “Good job.”
Eric’s bracer vibrated finally, and he looked down to check his milestone acquisition.
[You have leveled up!]
[You have 2 level-ups to process.]
[Blackflame Evoker 218, 219.]
[Choose a Skill and Trait to increase. Then repeat this once.]
Let’s go into Bristling Bastion and Fires of Death.
[Confirmed.]
-----
Skills:
[Armored] Bristling Bastion G10 - Increase Skill variables: 100-foot knockback, 300-foot range on knockback reprisal, 100-foot radius centered on the user.
-----
Traits:
Fires of Death 9 - The user inflicts more harm to a target the closer they are to them. A target within five feet suffers [29% increased damage], with the amplification falling off the more distant the target becomes, out to a range of [900-feet.]
-----
Forty-one more levels until I am done with Bristling Bastion, it turns into a Rote, and I can then Polymerize it with Cinderscale Shroud to make one mega-defensive Rote.
Eric lowered his bracer and felt quite happy with his rapid advancement. He was still a relatively low level in the grand scheme of the world—Darius was in his nine-hundreds, after all. But Eric had only been on Elyndor now for sixty-two days, and was already effectively a quarter of the way to a person’s power who had been on the world for thirty and some change years.
[It is quite satisfying to see rapid progression. But, that is with me putting some weight on the scales in your favor.]
Fair enough, Eric thought back.
Peter said, “Alright, level ups deal with.”
Naomi raised a hand. “One minute. I’m still considering Polymerizing…” she looked up at Eric. “Wait a second, I want to try something. Shannon’s got a Skill evolved from you, Peter has one, too…I need one from you.”
“No Embers,” Eric said.
“But,” Naomi said, “what if I did the same? I don’t need the Sparks right now, and I get them outside of the dungeon at a decent pace from challenges that show up. You all only really get them from combat challenges in the dungeons.” She held out her hand. “Let me evolve your stuff.”
Eric held out his hand and when Naomi clasped it, he felt a sharp zap that made him pull away.
[Choose a Rote, Skill, Trait, or Body Enhancement to evolve.]
Oh, Eric thought. Okay. Well, let’s do Blackflame Evocation.
[Confirmed.]
[Blackflame Evocation has evolved!]
-----
Rote:
[Scorching, Sparkshot] Blackflame Evocation - Manifest five spheres of Blackflame that instantly travel to up to five targets within range and immediately impact them. Each deals moderate damage + 1% of your maximum mana reservoir capacity. This damage is instantaneous and does not require a travel time. 500-foot range.
-----
Eric held his grimoire in his left hand, raised it, and fired off a test shot at a rock. He saw the pages of the Grimoire flutter for far less than a second, and heard a crack, fzzt. He hadn’t kept his eyes on his target, but saw the impact marks: deep gouges flickering with Blackflame.
“Whoa!” Shannon said. She reached over and grabbed Naomi’s hand.
Eric ignored the two women and kept his eyes locked on the rock this time, and re-used his Rote. This time, he saw the effect. He felt the mana surge through his body, into the grimoire, then instead of raising, pooling, then teleporting and striking from above, the spheres of crackling blackflame, with an outer layer of arcing lightning, just appeared and shot right down. Each gouged the stone and then blipped out of existence, but the burning DOT was left behind. He dismissed it, and looked back at his allies.
Shannon’s entire body was arcing with electricity, and she looked at Eric. “I’m really fast now.” He blinked, and she was a foot to her right, and still moving, making a quick lap around the room. “Fucking awesome!”
Peter let out a chuckle as he reached out and shook Naomi’s hand. Eric saw the sparkling, silver bubble surrounding him, hugging close to his skin, spark with the electricity. He pulled his hand back and said, “Nice. Now, we have some backlash damage.”
Naomi grinned. “Awesome. Upgrades all around.”
Eric nodded and gave her a thumbs up. “Great job.” He then looked at the entrance that led deeper, out of the cave, lined with more mushrooms that were glowing, but not emitting spores. “Let’s go clear more of this place.”
Peter took the lead and Shannon zipped past Eric to the back of the group. He could hear her panting, and she said between puffs, “I…fast…but it…hungry.” She reached into her storage dimension and grabbed a nutrient bar from when they were being a criminal organization, hiding out in safe houses. She scarfed it down in a few bites. “Water?” she asked. “Oh, wait, ignore me.” She then grabbed a canteen from the storage space and chugged that down.
“You’re like The Flash, now,” Naomi said as she followed Eric and Peter. “But not nearly as fast. Still, the more you use that part of your Skill, it seems like the more calories you’ll burn.”
“I could burn mana,” Shannon said as she put her canteen back. “I just went with calories because I don’t wanna waste mana.”
“Smart,” Eric replied.
Peter said back to them, “Hey, guys? We’ve got a problem.”
“What is it?” Eric asked as he walked up behind Peter and saw what the man had mentioned. They were on a cliff, with a little path winding down the side, and looking out into a massive cave. Dominating the center of the cave was a city: dark spires, cascading arches, and hundreds of spider webs going all around.
Naomi’s breath caught in her chest, and she barely whispered out, “Fucking spiders.”
Shannon got up next to them and pulled her crossbow up. “I see the Dungeon Core.” She handed it to each person, and it got passed down the line, and Eric spotted it. In the highest tower, at the center of the town. He also panned down, and saw dark-skinned, pointy-eared, white-haired people in armor, holding spiked weaponry, and whipping slaves that looked like they came from fantasy races out of a video game. Amongst the dark elves, he saw spiders that were the size of dogs, skittering about. Scattered amongst the armored ones were ones in lighter attire, whose hands sparked with arcane power as they wove magic into building more of the city.
Eric kept looking around and spied what must have been the chamber order, as below them at the bottom of the cliffs was a gate house, and then beyond that, he could see more solid buildings, and ones at the periphery that warbled and warped. He handed the crossbow back to Shannon. She said, “We could try sneaking?”
“No,” Eric said. “Chambers have to be cleared unless it's a stealth challenge…but for all we know this could be that.”
Shannon’s bracer vibrated, and she looked down, and her eyes went wide. “Oh, shit. Primal Force challenge.” She pulled it away and looked at the group. “I got a stealth mission! Says that I get an alternate route. Meet you all at the dungeon exit. Good luck, gotta go!” She began moving down the path and vanished from view.
Naomi frowned. She raised her bracer to her mouth. “Shannon? Call us if you need something.”
“It’s stealth. I got this.”
Eric looked at Peter, and then felt his own bracer vibrate. “Oh, shit.” He looked down at his display.
[Holder of primal force detected.]
[Additional challenge activated.]
[Full restore - granted.]
[Fight your way through the Mage Quarter of Krokthreral, the city of eternal dusk, and reach the Dungeon Core pedestal.
[Additional Embers may be awarded if flagged objectives are acquired. Only the holder of the Primal Force may interact with these objectives.]
Eric looked up and saw part of the city, left of the gate house below, solidified and became more real. As it did, definition filled the space, people appeared—so did spiders—and even more importantly, dozens of cloaked, lightly armored, and heavily armored dark elves, who were wielding magical energy and training.
Peter said, “Looks like I get the front entrance. I get to free a bunch of slaves.”
Naomi frowned and looked at her bracer. “I got nothing. Is there a default path?”
“Maybe you choose who you go with,” Eric offered.
[That would be accurate.]
Naomi replied, “I’ll stick with Peter.” She looked up at Eric. “Good luck. See you at the end.”
Eric nodded and began down the cliff. It was a short descent, and he saw a glimmering, glowstone path that led him to the left of the gatehouse and into what he assumed was the Mage Quarter. The architecture all around was deep, grey stone, and it was covered in spiderwebs from roof to roof, providing a highway for the creatures. He spent a Sigil—down to eighteen—to use Bristling Bastion, and made the melee weapons into spears, and the ranged ones into shortbows. The new, expanded ash and smoke cloud filled with cinders was a hundred feet in all directions, and scorched away the webs up above.
He walked through an arch, and heard a chime to his left. Then, he heard shouts from all around, as people—no, dungeon-made monsters in the guise of humanoids—came rushing out of the buildings. They wielded arcane might and magical energy, and they immediately were set ablaze by Blackflame Blaze. Some had the wisdom to put up barriers which took some of the damage.
Eric fired off Blackflame Evocation, sending one sphere to each of five different enemies, and when the orbs slammed into them, they let out cries of pain and were knocked about from the impact. His spears went to work and began stabbing at and fending off the spiked sword-wielding enemies who were also covered with magical might. The shortbows peppered them with arrows of Blackflame, which slammed deep and then spread more of the blaze.
The hostile, dark elf mages began firing off their spells: bolts of black pitch that Eric wasn’t able to dodge, despite his nervous system warning him about the incoming hits. They were instantaneous-traveling effects, just like his Rote. But, his reactive armor went off with several bangs and sent the foes flying back one-hundred feet, slamming into buildings, crushing masonry, and sending more rocks to collapse down.
They easily numbered in the dozens, and Eric was shot at by projectiles of all types: fire bolts, shards of ice, lances of lightning, spheres of acid, blades of hardened, compressed shadows that sliced toward him. He dodged what he could, but relied on his Blackmana Shield, the return-fire he was dishing out to stack his DOT and mana regeneration, and his Bristling Bastion to protect him.
Unfortunately, they were all spread out, and he couldn’t snag them all with a Blackflame Breath, and the melee attackers who were fighting against his spears broke them. Eric couldn’t re-summon them, and the enemies got close enough to start swinging weapons at him. Their bodies blurred, accelerating, and Eric was fully put on the defense as he had to focus entirely on dodging them from all sides.
Point-blank meteor it is, Eric thought.
He activated Blackflame Meteor just in front of himself. As the meteor formed overhead, though, and began to descend, a purple portal opened under it and transported it elsewhere. “That’s unfair,” Eric muttered between dodges.
One of the swords caught him on the left arm, broke through his Blackmana Shield somehow, and he felt the worst pain in his life as black spikes erupted from the wound, filling up his whole body. That moment of pain slowing him caused him to be hit by more strikes, and the agony of having millions of needles explode through his flesh and muscle took his breath away. He wasn’t going to die, because he had over thirty targets each being sapped of health and mana, which kept restoring him, but these enemies had some type of health transfer as well.
It was a back and forth exchange, with Eric losing more than he was gaining.
Panic raced through his thoughts as he tried to think of the best way to resolve the situation. Synapses were firing, and he figured it out after a half-second of torment. Fiery Chains, Blackflame Tether focusing the one closest to him that seemed to be healing just as quickly as they were being injured, and a point-blank Cinderstorm. Down from nineteen Sigils to sixteen.
The tether of grey light snapped out, connecting him and the foe, and that foe buckled and collapsed under the pain Eric diverted to it, as all healing and damage inflicted to one another was halved and distributed. But, Eric was immune to Blackflame, so he wasn’t suffering the injury of his foe. He had, however, established an infinite feedback loop, as both were healing off of the other’s wounds. That would keep Eric alive unless one of the weapons or magical attacks got a lucky vital-spot hit.
The chains that erupted and connected all of the enemies continued to stack up more of the DOTs, and also revealed more enemies that Eric didn’t know existed, because they had become invisible. He was not surrounded by six melee foes, he was actually surrounded by twelve: six of whom were now just floating chains that hovered in place, denoting an enemy. Finally, his Cinderstorm exploded right in front of him, sending a fireball of Blackflame out that then rained down more of the incendiary motes that kept stacking the injuries on enemies.
His Flashstep auto-activated in response to something, and Eric insta-traveled forward, further down the road. He was right next to a mage, whose eyes widened in surprise, and Eric stabbed his right hand claws into their neck, and ripped sideways. They exploded into ashes. Turning, Eric saw his remaining enemies, and used a Combustion Trigger on the enemy most in the center of the street.
Kaboom!
The world exploded in Blackflame, as dozens of damage-over-time burns erupted and dealt their damage farther out. That began to set off the chain reaction of damage building high enough to force foes to succumb to injury, and they began keeling over and turning to ashes. Each one that died restored thirty percent of Eric’s health and mana, and within a few seconds, all was quiet as spheres of ashes rolled along the ground.
Eric was sucking in breaths, felt his bracer vibrate, and ignored it as he put a hand to his arm, where the spike pain began.
That sucked, he thought.
[Very painful. And they have dimensional magic, it seems. Your meteor was directed elsewhere.]
Eric began grabbing up the Ashes, putting them into his storage space as he counted the kills. “Seventy,” he muttered.
[Total kill count of two-thousand, six-hundred and sixety-three.]
Eric closed his storage dimension and let out a sigh. He was full up on mana and health, but wanted to get some Sigils back. Staying put, he used Mana Channel in conjunction with Mana Conversion, and refilled five Sigils, capping out that Skill use for the day. “Twenty Sigils should be enough,” he said as he raised his bracer.

Kindling Efficiency 5 - Whenever the user (or a Blackflame empowered ally) applies a damage-over-time effect with a Skill or Rote, they recover mana equal to 5% of the total damage that effect is expected to deal over its full duration. This mana recovery occurs over the DOT’s duration rather than instantly. If the target dies before the DOT ends, the remaining recovery is granted immediately. This Trait can only recover mana from each target once every 5 seconds.
