Resulting setback to last backup: 48-72 hours.
I restored backups (made every 48 hours, now shifted to 24 hours because **** this) and thankfully the scene files that I worked on were not lost.
Replacing the SSD and the 32 GB worth of sticks was a kick in the balls, around $900, thanks to AI slop. And just waiting to get them. Since the SSD already croaked once in late 2023, I learned the importance of backups early. OGs will remember, must be the massive amount of individual files in the game's data, like 1,000,000 individual ones totaling 574 GB.
While I was working on 0.31, I began noticing small issues in the textures in some of the scenes, namely being replaced with NO TEX purple base colors to indicate errors. At first I thought I had messed something up until I decided to do a sweep with Bad Peggy (great tool). I reopened some "old" scenes like the ones to rerender and see how widespread it is.
I found dozens of tens of thousands files chipped. A lot of the textures are JPGs, so once some of the values are flipped or incorrectly read (unlike PNGs), the decoder DCT math falls apart, it doesn't even register as an image despite being 640 KB large.
The problem was deeper, one of my B channel RAM sticks was mucking about, incorrectly writing back data about scenes, so I had to remove it and with it the second bit of sticks.
