[0.1.5.1 8K Test/Preview] Sunday rig upgrading complete, gonna give it a test drive with a bonus Sierra fantasy
Going for a bit of a sci-fi vibe after having Tiana in medieval times. Tried to style her closer to FemShep from Mass Effect or Judy from Cyberpunk. Still not decided on the outfit, just running rendering trials and seeing if stuff explodes.
Notice that now we can have more dimly lit scenes as convergence is easier to obtain. I used to crank up the lighting because it's the analogue of having justification to lower ISO. In practice path tracers in dimly lit scenes shoot their shot everywhere in the hemisphere and sometimes you hit an emissive, sometimes you hit something dark... And you get noise.
Today was a bit hectic, pushed out the Android beta and finally brought online a second 3090 which will help me expand on the non-H part of the relationships with existing characters without compromising the spicy stuff going forward with 0.1.6. Hopefully there'll be a third one in there soon enough.
Performance is good, but the radiator is depositing 700 W of heat to fight the AC (getting further rendering iterations with a bit of OC since waterblocked), definitely ways up from the 300 W days of the 3080 on which this game was founded.
Wrote some additional tools (more trickery with materials and taking the value from pixels, eyes are very complicated for example, especially when behind glasses) to estimate the minimal amount of paths I need traced (killing it sooner helps with less fireflies, plus there's probably russian roulette algos inside iray anyways for early termination), so I can confidently limit them without affecting image quality. We also have a jump to 24 GB, so all scenes now fit into memory without aggressively optimizing (and compromising image quality).
I've also worked on further ways to reduce fireflies and noise in very dark scenes and am going to be disabling the built-in tonemapping in favor doing the mapping to display / colorgrading myself.
