Set in your standard RPG-fantasy world, a meek little wizard enters a tavern. He starts asking around for help because he needs somebody to help rescue his girlfriend. A classic fantasy plot! She’s been taken by invading demons and our wizard is too weak to rescue her on his own, but with a questing party, she’s sure to be saved. All the adventurers in the tavern brush him off, but a rogue takes him up on the gig, assuming it will be easy money.
They quest! Bandits are stopped from robbing the wizard. Traps are dismantled. The rogue holds off on his instinct to beat up the wizard, steal his money, and dump the body in a ditch.
The duo eventually reach the demon spire where the girlfriend is being held. As they delve lower into the facility, they start to come across a few dead demons.
As they keep going lower, the number of dead demons strewn across the spire increases and the rogue starts to get worried.
They finally reach the bottom and the whole floor is littered with battered demons. In the center, there’s a sigil containing a female barbarian frozen in stone ice, stuck in place while fighting and choking out more demons. The pair destroy the sigil and she's freed, with the wizard leaping into her arms as they joyously reconnect. The barbarian was so worried about him but he says that she must have gone through so much.
The wizard introduces the rogue as if they were great friends and he's so helpful. The barbarian sees through all of that and knows he's just in it for a buck (or to beat up and rob the wizard) and intimidates the heck out of him to be good and help them stop the demons.

The whole story is pretty much the “twist” that the girlfriend wasn’t captured because she’s some meek princess that needs a strong knight to save her, but that the girlfriend is the most capable warrior so the demons sacrificed themselves to take her out first. You have to sit through too much of the quest to get to the fun reveal and most people would dismiss it as a “save the princess” trope early on and never get there. But I still thought it was a cute little idea.
