DESCRIPTION

I initially wrote this idea where the supporting cast was all characters from a real comic company but changed it here so it’s a bit more copyright friendly. Imagine them to be other characters as you please. It’s fun to think of characters with non-traditional super powers that you can use to tell different kinds of stories and get away from comics of people just punching each other.

Our comic story starts with an establishing shot of a swanky restaurant in the city. Known superhero/billionaire playboy is inside schmoozing with pretty ladies and living carefree. An unremarkable man angrily enters the restaurant and shouts out the billionaire’s name. After a few beats of a shot from the street view, the restaurant suddenly explodes with action. The lunch crowd is now rushing out into the streets, following by windows being blown out, and lasers and contained explosions.

Soon, the hero’s team is on the scene and the hero is up in the air blasting lasers down at the angry man. With daring coordinated attacks, the team lays into the mystery man. Projectiles, melee attacks, gadgets to slow him down or bind him, and gases to choke him out. The team backs off from the gas and stands triumphant. Only for the man to emerge from the gas and wave it off.

The hero team falls back and now demands details on how the fight started. The original hero says that he went to a restaurant, the guy called him out, told all the people to leave, the hero fired a warning shot but the guy kept coming, so he suited up and started fighting. One member confirms that the guy told the civilians to leave, but that doesn't sound like standard super villain behavior. Another member asks what the guy said when the hero confronted him about what he's doing/what he wants, but the hero says he never asked since he was a little busy fighting a guy that just shrugged off laser blasts. A younger member of the team points out that the guy hasn't done one thing since the fight started: he never threw a punch or fought back. The mystery villain just went after the first hero. Everybody glares at him and asks what he did, but he's incredulous and says he's innocent.

A member of the team approaches calmly but cautiously and asks the guy to explain what's going on. The guy said he's here to make the billionaire pay, to which the billionaire says that's definitely villain talk. The team asks pay for what and the guy explains that a few days ago he was driving to a job interview and the page goes into a flashback. We see an F1-style car blow past regular cars on the road outside the city. Our villain’s car swerves to avoid behind hit and crashes into a ditch. The guy says he didn’t have a job then after he was laid off when his company shut down. He worked in tech, which the billionaire points out backs up villain status because access to super science, lasers, and robots is Villain 101. The guy is exasperated but says it's just normal software that normal people use. After his car was wrecked, he missed out on the only job lead he’d had in weeks AND now had a wrecked car he couldn’t afford to fix properly.

The guy is sick of heroes treating civilians like they don't matter and that the world is their playground. Even when they’re not being dicks showing off their money and power, they approach every encounter with their punch-things-first attitude. The team glares at the billionaire again and he confirms he was driving the car having fun. But! He did it outside of the city where normal people live, so it was totally safe. The guy goes off on him that this proves his point that they ignore the rest of the country and people living outside the city.

The billionaire agrees to pay for the damages, do some community service, and, after prodding, grudgingly apologizes for messing up the guy’s week. The team says that if the guy agrees to do some anger management, they'll have a role for him considering his incredible strength. The guy says he isn’t actually strong and that his power is that while he can shrug off any attacks against him, it balances out because he likewise can’t do any outgoing damage either. After some cajoling, he gets one of the team to agree to let him deck them and sure enough, they don’t even feel it.

Some time later, two powered people are tearing up the city in a typical comic book fight. The guy from our story shows up in a nice dress shirt and tie. He steps in an asks what the problem is; he's here as a negotiator to protect the civilians. The powered people ask his name and, smiling, he responds “Shrug”. The fighters fully stop and agree that's a stupid name. Why didn't he go with The Negotiator or Neutral or something. The name makes him sound like an emo teenager. The guy slumps a bit, saddened and showing that he can still have his ego hurt.
