This story was a bit too close to the ye olde Mercynaries story with the Collider hero family, but it goes different places and the cast is rather different, so I thought it would still be fun to write it up.

The story opens up with our main character getting ready to leave for college. He’s packing up his stuff and we can quickly tell that his relationship with his single mom is frayed. They don’t talk much and when they do, they’re curt with one another. Mom keeps seeming like she has something to say but never spits it out, much to the frustration of her son. With all the tension, the son goes out for the night with friends as they start their last summer together and mom stays in and has a few glasses of wine.
The next morning, hungover from the previous night’s wine, mom stumbles awake when hearing screams from the son’s room. She heads into his room to find a pretty girl freaking out that she’s transformed. The mom starts cursing, not at the son, but more towards the heavens. She tries to calm her changed son down and explain the family’s curse.
They were born into a family where power passes from each generation to the next and they serve time as heroes and defenders of the realm. When they’re of age, they gain the ability to transform into witchy magical girls that can wield the occult. Mom too was once a witch, grandma forced her into the lifestyle, but she hoped her son would be spared since he was male. The son is very confused but is calming down. Mom guides him through the process to change back and awash in sparkles and shining light, the son changes back to his normal self. The son starts to have a lot of questions and mom heads to the cabinet for a drink, but that causes the two to start arguing about her alcoholism.
