Our story begins in the shared apartment of our main character and his bimbo roommate. What seems like a fun premise quickly devolves as she spends her days lounging around, making messes she doesn’t clean up, and spending much of her time shopping but rarely paying her share of rent on time. He’s thankful for the nights she spends out of town because it means some quiet and no midnight dance parties.
After one of many arguments about rent, she finally returns home with news that she’s scored an online interview. However, she quickly douses water on his joy when she says that thinking about it just makes her sick so she’s too nervous to go through with it. She could do the job, but sitting in front of the camera being judged by people that want her to fail is just too scary. He’s annoyed at her flakiness but she has come up with a totally smart solution: he just needs to do the interview for her and once he aces it, she’ll do the job just fine.
Our lead argues against it and she gets huffy and says it's his fault because he's the one that wants her to get a job! Faced with her not paying rent if she messes up and the potential joyous future where she’s out of the house and maybe moves out and he can get a decent roommate, he eventually relents and she showers him in hugs and kisses. He says they just need to fiddle with a voice changer until they find something that sounds like her and then he can do the call. She agrees with the voice thingie idea but it’s totally a video interview and she’s pretty sure she mentioned that. And the resolution has to be way up or they’ll be suspicious, so it’s going to take all of her fashion and make-up expertise to turn him into a star!
It takes a few days of experimentation, but they finally settle on a make-up, hair, body shaping bodices and padding, and fashion ensemble she’s pleased with. He has the voice changer in a choker and has been practicing her mannerisms. He barely recognizes himself under the weight of all the dress-up, so he figures that this is the best it’s going to be and they confirm the interview time with the company.
The big day comes and the interview team doesn’t seem to suspect a thing. The people that run the lab don’t seem to care much about technical knowledge, but he makes sure to pepper in some of his own learnings and things he found when researching their parent company. He wants her to get this job and get out of the house, so he’s not pulling any punches. After the quick hello with the heads of the lab, a longer chat with her would-be managers, and a quick sync with HR, he thanks them for their time and awaits hearing back from them for the next steps. The HR manager looks off screen for a moment and says she’s getting nothing from thumbs up from the team around her, so why wait? There’s a required in-person interview session so they’ll send a car over to pick her up for it within the hour!
