Evil Inc Shareholders’ Report: Greetings from the Post-Vacation Recovery Ward

After a week in Michigan, I’m back at the drawing board — older, wiser, and slightly more suspicious of whiffle balls.

I’m back from a week in Michigan visiting family, and I’m still recovering from the traditional summer gauntlet: non-stop whiffle-ball, Cornhole, Aggravation — the board game, not the state of mind — and several rounds of card games like 65 and Scopa.

In other words, I have returned refreshed, recharged, and only mildly traumatized by relatives who take backyard games way more seriously than the Geneva Convention probably intended.

For starters, my 11-year-old nephew showed up with an outline for negotiating rules. As you can see, I had to put my foot down on bunting and leading off. Pitcher's mound was out for first base — but no others. And the on-deck batter was tasked with calling balls and strikes — and admonished to be honest.

But the kid wasn't done yet. The sheet above was the training regimen he had established to get my two sons ready for the games. It covered situational fielding, the baseball ready stance, and each player's walk-up songs.

Goals included:

• Win• Two-peat• Blowout• Mercy• Rip the ball

Practice sessions were intense. Did I mention it was in the high nineties the entire time we were up there?
