This is another LOUD beta update for BassFlip. Most of the changes in this version are refinements, but there is also one new feature that deserves a bit of explanation.
Changelog (v0.97)
New function: LOUD
Minor graphical updates and UI refinements
Demo version added, after many requests
LOUD
Version 0.97 introduces a new function called LOUD.
LOUD can best be described as a way of trading low bass for perceived loudness without killing the music. It selectively removes low-frequency energy in places where doing so gives you a loudness advantage, while trying to preserve the overall musical balance.
Unlike the rest of BassFlip, LOUD is automatically loudness-compensated.After a lot of testing, this turned out to be the most reliable way to evaluate the effect. With the loudness held constant, it is much easier to hear when the setting actually helps the music, and when you have gone too far.
There is an important caveat:Because LOUD is loudness-compensated, peaks can in some cases become higher than the incoming signal. That goes against BassFlip’s original core idea, which is to reduce problematic peaks, or at least keep them under control to avoid distortion later in the chain. For that reason, LOUD is intended as an optional tool, not something you necessarily leave on all the time.
Demo version
After many requests, BassFlip now includes a demo version. The demo makes it possible to properly evaluate the plugin before committing, while the beta continues to evolve.
Features from earlier betas (still relevant)
PowerLimits how far the phase rotation is allowed to go by reducing the likelihood of extreme rotation values.Useful for keeping the processing subtle.
Two processing modes
Constant Mode (0.91)BassFlip continuously measures and applies the most beneficial phase rotation across the signal.
Window Mode (0.94)BassFlip analyzes a short window around each bass transient (default 40 ms) and applies the best phase rotation only during that moment.
The Window knob sets the window size. The small button next to it switches back to Constant Mode.
The Glide control is active in both modes.Higher values are smoother and more transparent, but give slightly less headroom.Lower values react faster and give more gain, but with more audible movement.
Limiter
BassFlip includes a limiter section consisting of a soft clipper, a hard clipper, and a limiter in series. The entire section runs at 4× oversampling to minimize aliasing.
The limiter automatically follows the incoming signal’s peak level and keeps the original peak values of the unprocessed signal intact. The Soft Clip control adds gentle saturation, and the G button (Gain Compensation) keeps the output level consistent so you can judge tone rather than loudness.
Background
BassFlip is my own implementation of a classic mastering and broadcast trick — phase rotation in the low end.
The phase is rotated by the same amount from 20 Hz up to a user-defined crossover frequency, using FFT.In Auto mode, BassFlip constantly analyzes the signal and selects the phase rotation that gives the best balance between transparency and loudness, updated at every sample.
Many high-end analog mastering processors exhibit similar phase behavior as a side effect of their design, which is likely why BassFlip often adds a subtle analog feel despite being fully digital.
