DESCRIPTION

The sun beat down on the Monaco Grand Prix, reflecting blindingly off the pristine yachts anchored in the harbor.

Ivan Vanko didn't feel the warmth. Standing shoulder-to-shoulder with oblivious mechanics near the pit lane entrance, all he felt was the bitter, biting cold of the Moscow winter that had buried his father.

He looked up.

There, in the glass-paneled VIP suite hanging over the track, was Tony Stark. He was wearing tailored silk, laughing at a joke, and casually swirling a glass of expensive champagne. Stark looked healthy. He looked vibrant. He looked completely insulated from the misery his family had built their empire on.

A cold, heavy fury burned in Vanko’s chest. Anton Vanko had died in a rotting apartment with nothing but a bottle of cheap vodka. Stark was drinking champagne on top of the world.

It was time to balance the scales.

Vanko gripped the collar of his heavy orange jumpsuit and ripped it open down the middle. He shrugged the fabric off his shoulders, letting it fall to his waist. The crude, heavy metal harness strapped to his chest was fully exposed. The unshielded arc reactor embedded in the center flared to life, emitting a harsh, unstable white-blue glow.

He pushed past a track official.

"Hey! You can't be out here!" the official yelled, reaching for him.

Vanko ignored him. He stepped directly over the concrete barrier and walked onto the active race track.

He reached down to his waist and grabbed the thick handles attached to his harness. He whipped his arms outward. Two long cables of raw, crackling plasma ignited from the handles with the sound of a thunderclap. He dragged them across the asphalt as he walked. The searing heat instantly melted the track, throwing a shower of bright orange sparks into the air.

The roaring whine of an approaching F1 engine drowned out the screams of the crowd.

A blue and white race car came tearing around the corner at over two hundred miles per hour. The driver hit the brakes the second he saw the man standing in the middle of the track, but there was no time to stop.

Vanko didn't flinch. He planted his feet, reared his right arm back, and snapped the plasma whip forward.

The glowing cable sliced straight through the front suspension of the car like a hot knife through butter. The chassis violently split in half. The rear section flipped into the air, while the front cockpit skidded across the asphalt, spinning wildly out of control, heading straight for the concrete retaining wall.

Inside the cockpit, the driver slammed his eyes shut and threw his arms over his helmet, bracing for the bone-crushing impact.

It never came.

Up on the VIP balcony, Ethan had been watching Vanko step onto the track. The moment the car split, Ethan casually rested his hand on the railing and flicked his index finger.

Down on the track, a translucent, golden geometric shield flared to life inches in front of the sliding cockpit.

The heavy metal chassis slammed into the magical barrier and bounced off instantly, sliding to a harmless halt.

The driver opened his eyes, hyperventilating. He stared through his visor at the fading golden sparks dissipating in the air. He was completely uninjured. The sheer, impossible reality of what had just saved his life, combined with the absolute terror of the crash, broke his composure. He pissed himself right there in the seat, shaking violently as he fumbled to unbuckle his harness.

Vanko didn't notice the golden shield. He didn't care about the driver.

He turned his eyes back up to the VIP balcony.

Vanko cracked his left arm like a bullwhip. The plasma cable lashed upward, wrapping cleanly around the thick steel support pillar directly beneath Tony Stark’s private suite. Vanko yanked back hard.

The sound of shearing metal screamed over the roaring engines.

The entire VIP balcony violently lurched downward.

Panic erupted. Champagne glasses shattered against the tilted floor. Screams ripped through the paddock as billionaires, models, and executives scrambled over each other toward the exits.

"Pepper, get down!" Tony yelled, grabbing her arm and shoving her behind the heavy oak bar.

The floor tilted another five degrees. A massive pane of reinforced glass cracked, threatening to dump the occupants onto the track below.

Ethan stood his ground, his heavy boots planted firmly on the slanted floor. He kept his hands at his sides, out of view of the flashing cameras. He subtly twisted his wrist.

A localized spatial lock, invisible to the naked eye, snapped around the severed steel pillar. The balcony abruptly stopped sinking, groaning under the suspended magical pressure. It gave them a stable floor, but Ethan knew it wouldn't hold forever.

"Happy! The case!" Tony shouted over the screaming crowd.

Happy Hogan pushed through the panic, clutching a red and silver metal briefcase to his chest. He practically threw it across the tilted floor.

Tony caught it. He stepped out from behind the bar, dropping the briefcase flat onto the ground.

"Stay here," Tony ordered Pepper. He stepped onto the center of the case and pulled the handles up.

The Mark V armor deployed.

It was a violent, mechanical symphony. Silver and red plating rapidly expanded outward, crawling up Tony’s legs, wrapping around his torso, and locking heavily over his arms. The mechanical whirs and heavy metallic clanks cut through the ambient noise of the crowd. The faceplate slammed down with a resounding thud, the eye-slits flaring to life with an aggressive blue light.

Tony didn't wait for Vanko to bring the balcony down the rest of the way. The Mark V wasn't built for sustained flight, but it had enough thrust for a jump.

Iron Man vaulted over the shattered glass railing, dropping twenty feet straight down onto the track. He landed in a heavy, three-point crouch, the concrete cracking under his boots.

Vanko turned, his plasma whips crackling, scorching the ground around him.

"Tony Stark," Vanko spat, his heavy Russian accent cutting through the smoke. "You come from a family of thieves and butchers."

"And you have terrible fashion sense," Tony’s synthesized voice fired back through the suit's external speakers.

Tony raised his right gauntlet and fired a repulsor blast.

Vanko didn't dodge. He snapped his right whip forward, striking the concussive beam mid-air. The plasma violently deflected the repulsor energy, sending it crashing into the side of an empty pit garage.

Vanko lunged. He swung his left whip in a wide, lethal arc.

Tony ducked, the searing heat of the plasma missing his helmet by inches. The whip wrapped tightly around the front end of another abandoned F1 car. Vanko yanked hard, hurling the two-ton vehicle directly at Tony.

Tony fired both repulsors, blasting the car in half before it could crush him.

But Vanko was already moving. He cracked his right whip, the plasma cable wrapping tightly around Tony’s left arm. The heat immediately began eating through the Mark V’s silver plating. Warning klaxons blared inside Tony’s helmet as the structural integrity of the suit dropped rapidly.

Vanko pulled Tony forward, grinning like a madman, rearing his other whip back to decapitate him.

Up on the balcony, Ethan watched the killing blow coming.

He didn't summon a portal. He didn't cast a visible spell.

Ethan simply locked his eyes on Vanko’s left arm and flexed his fingers.

Telekinesis.

Vanko swung the whip forward, but it suddenly froze. The kinetic momentum of the plasma cable just stopped dead in mid-air, as if caught in a localized gravity well.

It only lasted for half a second. But half a second was a lifetime for Tony Stark.

Tony didn't question the sudden opening. He dropped his center of gravity, planting his boots firmly into the asphalt.

The chest plate of the Mark V slid open, exposing the blinding light of his new arc reactor.

"Eat this," Tony growled.

He fired the Unibeam.

A massive, concentrated pillar of pure white-hot energy erupted from Tony's chest. It hit Vanko dead center, striking the unstable, crude arc reactor strapped to the Russian's torso.

The impact was devastating.

Vanko’s crude reactor couldn't handle the sudden, massive influx of Stark’s perfected element. It violently overloaded. A shockwave of blue energy ripped outward, followed by a concussive explosion that shattered every remaining pane of glass in the paddock.

When the thick smoke finally cleared, Ivan Vanko was lying flat on his back on the scorched asphalt.

The harness was completely slagged, melted into his chest. His unblinking eyes stared up at the cloudy Monaco sky.

He was dead.

The roaring of the F1 cars had stopped entirely. The massive crowd was completely silent, save for a few distant sirens and the crackle of burning tires.

Tony stood up slowly. The Mark V armor was heavily damaged, the left arm sparking where the whip had burned through the top layer of plating. He stared down at Vanko's body.

He had won. He had protected Pepper and the crowd. But it wasn't a clean victory. He had just executed a man on live television. The heavy, ugly reality of it settled into his chest.

Up on the balcony, Ethan watched Tony lower his gauntlets.

A translucent blue screen flared to life in the corner of Ethan’s vision.

Current Ben Template Synchronization: 14%

Ethan dismissed the screen with a thought.

He turned away from the railing as Monaco security finally swarmed the balcony, barking orders and securing the remaining VIPs.

"Let's go," Ethan said, turning to Gwen.

She nodded, still shaken by the sheer violence of the sudden attack.

Natalie was already ahead of them, efficiently escorting Pepper Potts toward the emergency exits. Her S.H.I.E.L.D. training ensured they bypassed the main choke points, completely avoiding the flood of paparazzi rushing the stairs.

*****

Thousands of miles away, in a sprawling, sterile office in Queens, New York.

Justin Hammer sat behind his massive desk, staring at the live CNN feed on his flat-screen TV. The banner at the bottom of the screen flashed in bright red: TERROR AT MONACO: STARK SURVIVES ASSASSINATION ATTEMPT.

Hammer leaned closer to the screen, his eyes wide.

He didn't care about Stark surviving. He was staring at the dead man on the stretcher. Specifically, he was staring at the scorched, crude metal harness strapped to the corpse’s chest.

"That was an arc reactor," Hammer whispered to himself. "Someone else figured out the arc reactor."

A massive, golden opportunity had just presented itself. If that Russian thug could build a reactor in a cave, Hammer could have hired him, put him in a state-of-the-art lab, and embarrassed Stark at his own Expo.

But Stark had vaporized him. The guy was dead. The opportunity was literally ashes.

Hammer picked up his crystal tumbler of scotch and downed it. He slammed the glass onto the desk.

He was bleeding defense contracts. The Pentagon was laughing at him in closed-door meetings. He desperately needed something flashy, something deadly, and he needed it before Stark completely monopolized the global security market. If he couldn't have the Russian, he needed someone else.

He grabbed his desk phone and hit a restricted speed-dial number.

"Yeah, it's me," Hammer said, his voice tight with desperation. "Did you see the news? Stark just killed the only other guy on Earth with an arc reactor. I needed that guy."

He listened to the fixer on the other end of the line.

"I don't care that he's dead!" Hammer snapped. "I need a pivot. I need an underground engineer. What about that weird, glowing scrap my cleanup crew bought off the Hell's Kitchen scavengers last week? The green bird metal."

The voice on the line murmured a response.

"I don't care if my R&D department doesn't understand it," Hammer said, standing up and pacing behind his desk. "Find me someone who does. I need a rogue genius. Someone who builds off-the-books tech. I want weapons that make Iron Man look like a tin toy."

The fixer hesitated, then mentioned the Kingpin's network, and a specific name in the local underground.

Hammer stopped pacing. He looked back at the frozen image of Iron Man on his TV screen.

"Phineas Mason," Hammer repeated the name, testing how it sounded. "The Tinkerer. Fine. Buy him before Fisk does."
