DESCRIPTION

The Sanctum was incredibly quiet.

The main foyer had been temporarily converted into a makeshift recovery room. Gwen sat on the edge of a plush leather sofa, a heavy wool blanket draped over her shoulders. The agonizing, physical pain of the sonic trap was gone, but her nerves still felt raw, buzzing with a low, phantom static.

Ethan stood by the mahogany coffee table, his hands moving methodically over a shattered piece of the Tinkerer’s beacon he had pulled from the warehouse wreckage.

Natasha stood near the arched window, looking out at the dark city. She had cleaned the blood off her neck, but her tactical suit was still torn, and her knuckles were dark with fresh bruises.

The silence in the room was heavy, thick with unresolved tension.

Gwen wasn't crying. She was just angry. At herself first. Then at Ethan. And then at the spy standing by the glass.

"You knew she was a spy," Gwen said. Her voice wasn't loud, but it cut through the quiet room like a knife.

Ethan didn't stop working on the metal shard. "Yes."

Gwen gripped the edges of her blanket. "And you let her live here?"

"Yes," Ethan answered, keeping his tone perfectly level.

"And you let her dress like that just to mess with me?" Gwen demanded, her blue eyes narrowing.

Ethan finally paused. He looked up, glancing briefly at Natasha before looking back at Gwen.

"That part was mostly her commitment to the role," Ethan said.

Natasha didn't turn around, but her posture shifted slightly.

Gwen stared at him, entirely unamused. "Not funny."

Ethan accepted the glare. "Fair."

He went back to the metal.

Gwen turned her attention to the window. "So everything was fake."

Natasha finally turned around. She didn't look guilty. She didn't soften her expression or offer a hollow apology. She was simply Natasha.

"Fury sent me to watch him," Natasha said. "That part is true."

"Everything else was a lie," Gwen shot back.

"No," Natasha replied, her voice calm and absolute. "The cover was fake. The bullets were real. The blood was real. Me pulling you off that floor was real."

Gwen locked her jaw. She had no easy answer for that. She hated the deception, but she couldn't erase the memory of Natasha standing between her and the mercenaries when she couldn't stand on her own.

Natasha held her gaze for a long moment.

"Fury did not order me to save you," Natasha added.

Gwen looked away first. She still hated the lie. She just couldn’t pretend Natasha had only been a lie. Natasha wasn't a petty rival competing for Ethan's attention anymore. She was a dangerous liar, but she was also a proven ally who had chosen Gwen’s life over her own mission.

Gwen broke the eye contact first, staring down at the floorboards. She didn't forgive her, but the burning, territorial anger began to fade into a reluctant, quiet respect.

On the coffee table, Ethan finished his work.

He had taken the jagged shard of the Tinkerer’s beacon the Vulture core residue readings from his Multiversal Tracker, and Gwen’s unique resonance profile. Using the precise, structural magic of Kamar-Taj, he forged the conflicting energies into a small, dull-silver amulet.

He walked over and held it out to her.

Gwen took it. It felt cold against her palm, humming with a faint, stabilizing weight.

"Is it fixed?" Gwen asked quietly.

"No. It's patched," Ethan said, sitting on the edge of the coffee table facing her. "Big difference."

He pointed to the amulet. "That will block low-grade sonic tracking. It will hide you from any more of Fisk’s imitation tech, and it will muffle the echo leaking through the Web layers. But it won't stop a true hunter forever, and it won't hide you if you go reckless and cross dimensions."

Gwen closed her hand around the metal. She looked down, her throat tightening.

"I wanted to prove I belonged out there," Gwen admitted, her voice dropping to a harsh whisper. "That I wasn't just... someone you have to protect."

"You are a partner," Ethan told her, his golden eyes locking onto hers. "That's exactly why I'm not benching you. But partners listen."

Gwen didn't like hearing it, but she understood. "I froze."

"The trap was built to make you freeze," Ethan corrected smoothly. "It attacked your greatest advantage."

Gwen looked up at him. "And next time?"

"Next time," Ethan said, a dangerous smirk finally returning to his face, "we make sure it freezes first."

A faint, genuine smile broke through the exhaustion on Gwen's face The mistake still sat heavy in her chest, but it no longer felt like it was crushing her.

As the tension in the room settled, a translucent blue screen flared silently in Ethan’s vision.

Ethan read the update and dismissed it with a thought.

Far away. Beyond the physical boundaries of Earth.

The sky of the ruined world was the color of dried blood. The crumbling skyscrapers were completely wrapped in thick, grayish-white webbing.

A dead Spider-Man lay broken in the rubble of an abandoned street, his red and blue suit torn to shreds.

Standing over the corpse was a tall, aristocratic man in an immaculate, nineteenth-century Victorian coat. His skin was unnervingly pale, and his dark eyes carried the absolute, hollow hunger of an apex predator.

The Inheritor tilted his head.

A faint, distorted echo rippled across the Great Web. It was weak. A fragment of a signal broadcast from a broken machine.

He couldn't see the exact coordinates. He couldn't open a door straight to the source. But he could taste the flavor of the resonance on the cosmic wind.

He sensed three distinct things. A hidden Spider-Totem. An unfamiliar, distant universe. And the heavy, unmistakable interference of a sorcerer trying to mask the scent.

The Inheritor smiled, his fangs catching the dim, red light of the dead world.

"Not close enough to touch," he whispered, looking down at the broken Spider-Man at his feet. "Close enough to hunt."

Back in the warm, quiet foyer of the Sanctum, Ethan’s cyberpunk smartphone suddenly vibrated on the coffee table.

Ethan picked it up. The caller ID was encrypted.

He hit accept and put it to his ear.

"We have another problem," Nick Fury sounded tired and pissed.

"You people collect those," Ethan said easily, leaning back against the table.

"Something fell in New Mexico," Fury stated.

Ethan already knew what that meant. Right on cue, a new blue prompt snapped into his vision.

Ethan read the prompt and let out a slow sigh. He dropped the phone back onto the table.

Gwen pulled the blanket tighter around her shoulders, looking at him. "What now?"

"Apparently," Ethan said, running a hand through his hair, "gods are falling out of the sky."

Somewhere in the desert, a hammer waited for a god.
