Backgrounds

DESCRIPTION

I don't really like drawing backgrounds. It's not my specialty. I focus on individual characters, often broken up into a few pieces so that I can work larger over several pieces of paper. Backgrounds often need to be simple, in a way that's hard to make interesting, and the work requires a mechanical quality rather than an organic one. I might put a lot of detail into things, to try to cover up that I'm feeling lost, about what to do.

I'm doing a series of mini-comics right now, and when I looked at the inks I'd done for the background elements (and other elements that I'd forgotten to draw until now), I wondered if I'd had a concussion. It was inked like I'd been kicked in the head. It was very sloppy work, full of errors, because I'm exhausted lately and was trying to ink the backgrounds quickly in one go, without having drawn good rough versions first. But with some digital redrawing I've been able to polish the work up so it's less embarrassing. It's just taking awhile. Some straight digital linework helps.

I wonder if I should make this into a coloring book as well, like I did with The Thief and the Cobbler and My Little Pony and so on.
