Introducing Kaylin Thornwynd: The Accorded Guild's Newest Recruitable Companion
We're excited to share some progress in the development of Become King of Skyrim TNG: The Accorded expansion—our first fully realized companion character, Kaylin Thornwynd. This has been months in the making, and we're thrilled to pull back the curtain on what we've built and what's still to come.
Meet Kaylin
Kaylin isn't your typical follower. When you first meet her at the Accorded Guild Hall, she's guarded, practical, and clearly carrying weight she doesn't talk about. She's been with the guild for eight months, working as a scout, reading situations, watching for threats, keeping people safe. She's competent at what she does, but there's a wariness to her. A sense that she's running from something, or maybe just trying to prove she deserves to stay.
Her backstory is rooted in a single, impossible choice—the kind that saves one life at the cost of another. The guilt from that choice has shaped everything about who she is now: her reluctance to trust, her belief that she doesn't deserve permanence, and her need to earn her place through usefulness rather than connection. Over time, if you earn her trust, you'll learn the full story. But Kaylin doesn't open up easily, and she won't do it on anyone's timeline but her own.
She may look a little familiar to you. Kaylin's face has been gifted to us by Nexus creator formerly known as ZckeZckt and her armor by Collygon. Thank you both for the generous support.
A Dynamic Affinity System
Kaylin's relationship with the player is built on a living affinity system that responds to your actions, choices, and the time you spend together. We've modeled this on Fallout 4's native affinity system with the limitations that Skyrim presents.
Affinity grows through:
Time spent traveling together. Simply having her as a companion builds trust slowly over time.
Acts of care. Healing her when she's hurt, giving her practical gifts, or sharing moments at a campfire all matter.
Shared experiences. Fighting side-by-side, clearing dangerous locations together, and surviving tough encounters create bonds.
Moral choices. How you treat others when she's watching—donating to beggars, defending her from insults, shapes how she sees you.
Affinity can also decrease:
Committing crimes while she's with you reflects poorly on the kind of person you are.
Dismissing her concerns or agreeing with NPCs who insult her cuts deeper than you might think.
Giving her expensive, showy gifts when she values practicality shows you don't understand her.
The affinity system tracks across four relationship tiers—Guarded, Warming Up, Trusting, and Close—with her dialogue, behavior, and availability of personal conversations changing as your relationship deepens. Reach certain thresholds, and new story content unlocks naturally, including her companion quest and, eventually, the option to pursue a romantic relationship.
Her Companion Quest
Kaylin's personal quest will take you to Solitude, where her estranged sister has returned to Skyrim after years of silence. The reunion is complicated, shaped by the guilt Kaylin carries and the choices she made long ago. How you help her navigate this will define not just the outcome of the quest, but the trajectory of your relationship with her going forward.
We're keeping the details under wraps for now, but expect meaningful choices, emotional weight, and consequences that ripple beyond the quest itself.
Romance (Coming Soon)
Yes, Kaylin will be romanceable, but not immediately, and not without effort. Romance is gated behind both high affinity and the completion of her companion quest. It's a natural extension of the trust and connection you've built, not a checkbox to tick off. We're designing it to feel earned, complex, and true to her character, while opening a moral quandary for some of you.
More on that in a future update.
Kaylin's Voice
As usual we will be turning to Elevenlabs to create Kaylin's unique voice. Here's just a little preview of the direction we're going with her.
What's Next?
We're currently finalizing Kaylin's passive dialogue system, her location-aware commentary, and her integration into the broader world of Skyrim. After that, we'll be moving into her companion quest design and romance arc, followed by two more companion quests for the Accorded Guild: Kalel and Veldar.
