Hi everyone! ^w^
Still grinding out more frames for the animation and bouncing between that and concept art for Kincaid's ship and some additional assets for sub-biomes.
I want to reintroduce the mossier look of our old builds for some upcoming areas, so I went back to the old art, brought it to Fabian's color palette and updated it.
I think having both, a grassier sub biome, and the mossy one, would be nice for some visual freshness between levels and to give parts of the jungle world a more unique look. I still have some areas to make and I want to avoid them feeling too samey and meandering.
Painting Straight Into the Game
Last devlog, bunny was showing off the new greyboxing setup that lets us make levels while the game is running using the free ldtk level editor. Unfortunately it turned out the editor does not support decorating with just sprites very well.
Bunny figured out how to efficiently load and import sprites while the game is running. The GM dev Juju Adams made a free library called Dynamo that watches files and folders and loads in stuff whenever it changed. This way I can just draw in aseprite while the game is running, press save, and the running game loads in the graphics. We made a very crude in-game level editor that lets us put down these chunks as decorations.
That means using the ldtk we can build the maps and by pressing a button, we can go into edit mode and decorate the world.
It even works when we're on separate machines: we share the art folder via our network, bunny runs the game, streams it to me via Discord, and when I save my work it shows up on his screen a second later - so I get a live preview of how my stuff would look in the final game.
Not only is that suuuuper efficient but also incredibly fun! xD
I can't wait to show the workflow in one of my upcoming streams.
Between LDTK hot reloading levels and Aseprite hot reloading art, this is another little piece falling into place for potential mod support. Again, I want to stress that adding mod support is not our focus, it is simply a by product of making our own production process more efficient. Polishing up our janky tools to be easy to use outside of production would still be a good chunk of work that we can't carve out time for just yet. Buuuut the potential is really exciting! :3
Until next time!Cookie & Bunny
