FEEDBACK SESSION: "In the Footsteps of Velazquez"
DESCRIPTION

Dear team! I’m writing to let you know that our special feedback session for "In the Footsteps of Velázquez" is scheduled for April 28th, and the deadline for submitting work is April 26th. All feedback will be given anonymously, so don’t be shy! This is a rare opportunity to receive individually tailored advice that will help you grow. And it will be fun!

Important note: since the process we outlined in "In the Footsteps of Velázquez" is quite complex, some of us may not have the time to complete the full painting by April 26th. You’re absolutely welcome to submit unfinished copies and receive feedback based on your current stage in the process. In fact, this can be even more effective than submitting a finished piece, as mid-process feedback allows you to intervene and correct issues before they become more permanent (especially before glazing). So whether you’ve completed your copy, only completed your Underpainting, or are somewhere in between, I’ll be happy to take a close look and offer guidance. Looking forward to seeing your work!

It’s been a joy working with you on this journey. This was certainly one of the most ambitious series I’ve ever put together, and the results have been incredibly gratifying. I hope you enjoyed this deep dive into Velázquez’s techniques and philosophy.

We explored the traditionally understood stages of his more ambitious works: underpainting, dead layer, body color, and glazing. I was especially excited to share some original contributions, my own hypotheses about the nuances within these stages, formulated into into practical, actionable, painting techniques: the "Yellow Dead Layer," "Key Color Drawing," and the "Black Glaze." This is the first time I’ve introduced these concepts, and I hope you’ll find them useful in your own Velázquez studies, and beyond.

See you on April 28th! The Zoom link is also here.
