It is currently "Miracle on Ice" season. You all probably know the story by now of the underdog American hockey team besting the Soviet Union at the 1980 Winter Olympics. If not, you can get the gist of that here, but for today's purposes there's just one piece of that story to keep in mind: the game took place in New York, which gave the Americans a home-ice advantage that proved pretty important.
I wanted to figure out how that happened - not in the sense of answering how a host city is selected for the Olympics, but why the hell a tiny village of 2,000 people in upstate New York became the host city to not one, but two Winter Games (as of February 16, 2026).
Just a heads up, this is my (Will. I am Will. Sorry.) version of events. I dove into a few rabbit holes and came out with a story that interested me most and answered the specific questions I had, particularly how the fuck Lake Placid became a thing. In some ways, this is a familiar approach, in other ways it is different for Secret Base. We'd love to know what you think; style or tone, does it work for you?
