Like I've said, there are a number of types of tracks that come out during a song-a-day. You sit down to write, and sometimes it's a full track, mostly done. Other times it's more of a specific moment that has a particular feeling tone, which can be expanded on or used in another track later.

In my opinion this one, written during the widow song-a-day, has a very strong first verse. It's a great example of the classic writing rule, "Show, don't tell," painting a story of loss without using any direct feeling-statements. Instead of "I feel numb and lost since you left," it employs images to illustrate the emotion.

"Five years gone, I can't look in the mirrorHold my hands tight across my armsI'm asleep, falling off the mattressWaking up to copper on my tongue"

Being unable to look in the mirror even after five years. Clutching hands tightly, implying a closing up of the self. The second two lines also use interesting language to express a metaphorical image; falling off the bed while you are sleeping, biting your tongue and tasting blood in your mouth. Something like "Blood in my mouth" would be decent, but since the language is a bit cliche it wouldn't hit nearly as much emotionally. Using "Copper on my tongue" has the same meaning (Blood tastes like copper), but it's stronger because it is unique. It makes you think for a second, which helps you process more acutely.

The second verse makes pretty good use of interesting imagery as well, "Holding on to nothing in our lungs," "Bite my hand," and also ends with a direct dialogue-style statement, which I always find to be very strong lyrically. If you want to effectively communicate an emotional state, you need both the vast and the specific. This verse paints a picture with images, then shifts the tone to a specific direct statement.

"Feeling smallTell me how we got hereHolding onTo nothing in our lungsBite my handYou told me I could do thisBut I’m telling youYou’re wrongyou’re wrongyou’re wrongyou’re wrong"

Unfortunately, once enough time passes, certain pieces aren't relevant emotionally anymore, and since I only really write about what is true to me at the moment this one had to go in the trash.
