Hello everyone!
I hope you're having a wonderful weekend so far!
Today I’m excited to share my latest progress on the tileset for the Magical Girl Azalea demo!
These tiles are for the very first region of the game, the "Ebonwood Forest"
They capture the unique atmosphere of this mysterious area and help bring its environment to life.
Since the story takes place in the demon world, the overall tone is much darker and more otherworldly than the human realm.
I’ve leaned heavily into night-time colors, deep purples, cool blues, and cold tones to make the forest feel enchanting yet slightly ominous.
For this region I’ve created multiple tilesets with lots of variety:
The main tileset mixes rock + grass areas
A fully rocky version
A lush full-grass version
And of course, the signature Ebonwood tree tiles!
These are massive, rock-hard trees with thick, with some sturdy branches that players can actually use as platforms.
The trees are built in several modular pieces so I can freely combine and attach them as needed to create unique, organic-looking formations throughout the forest.
The Ebonwood Forest is ruled by the Capra Clan, who keep it under constant surveillance. Other creatures and demons also inhabit these woods and help co-patrol the region, adding to the feeling that you’re never truly alone among the trees…
Whats Next?
The overall amount of artwork needed for the game demo is finally coming to an end!
I’m planning to release the closed playtesting demo around next month, as soon as I finish the remaining tasks.
I haven’t set an exact date yet, but as soon as I feel ready I’ll make the official announcement right here!
With the tilesets done, I’ll move on to level design blockouts, test if the gameplay feels right, and then start placing all the new tilesets into the rooms.
I’m also planning to add one new enemy for a bit of extra spice, but keeping it very simple: a static enemy that doesn’t move or have animations.
It will shoot projectiles and support its allies. I want to keep the scope as small as possible so it doesn’t delay the playtest release.
I’m really happy with how the tileset turned out and I can’t wait to show you more as the game continues to develop.
Thank you so much for your continued support it really means everything!
