As we've worked on S&M, the earliest portraits to be completed have had to be reworked and steadily replaced as the broader art style has evolved. One specific portrait that was a constant source of irritation was that for La Pensanto, one of the 3* "skills" that personify Jensey's thought process throughout S&M.
*There's a 4th but that's a story for another time ^^
A source of supposedly rigid logic, La Pensanto was initially imagined to be a fading vision of the academics of the Old World, with this being expanded on between the first and second iteration of the design.
The second iteration of the design also had an unused version (seen above) from a period when we were exploring a mechanic of the "skills" steadily eroded over time. Throughout the story the portraits would lose details as their dialogue and notes begin to become increasingly self-destructive and nonsensical.
This mechanic was ultimately scrapped as we refined our vision, but it still remains one of our favorite mechanics from the earliest versions of the rewrite.
(We'll probably use it down the road for another project!)
The final design feature ultimately dropped most of the original's ties to Old World academia, though kept the color scheme and circular motif present within even the first iteration of the portrait.
