DESCRIPTION

This title alone... Nightmare Stained in Ink. It perfectly captures the feeling of this entire episode. Everything did feel heavier. And honestly, these kinds of episodes are the ones that make this series so fascinating to me.

Qifrey and Olruggio always harp on how beautiful magic is. How it's meant to bring happiness and joy. And watching Coco become a witch felt so magical at first. But the magic system is so much more than that underneath. It feels dangerous. Emotional. Every spell holds these consequences tied to intention, emotion, and knowledge. The imagery in this episode was beautifully haunting. The ink was alive. It felt like fear was physically spreading into us through the ink even just as a viewer. The way this entire series uses art and visual symbolism is absolutely unreal. I already sense it being one you watch over and over again and see new things every single time. And Qifrey. Every episode adds a new layer to him. He clearly cares so deeply about his students, especially Coco. But there's this wall around him that makes him feel dark. Troubled. The more we learn about forbidden magic, memory tampering, and the Brimmed Hats, the more I feel like everyone in this world has darkness within them one way or another. Even the 'good' side feels a bit morally gray at times.I really love how this series handles fear. It's not loud or explosive. Fear is quiet here. It's ink stained nightmares. It's fear of losing memories. Fear of losing who you are. Fear of even knowledge itself. It gives this series a horror element that I never expected going in.And poor Coco. She keeps getting thrown deeper and deeper into things way bigger than her. But still, she holds onto kindness. Still, she finds joy in the smaller moments. She hasn't let this world harden her yet. And I hope she always stays this way. Even as she uncovers more and more of the truth. This episode definitely left me feeling a bit uneasy. It's so difficult to not binge 3 to 4 episodes of an anime! But I feel like this is the best one to do that with because each episode is like peeling back a beautiful painting layer by layer only to reveal something darker underneath hidden in ink.See you all next week for more!Thank you for your support on Patreon!Relax and enjoy 🍿🌿SYNC ALONG LINK: https://youtu.be/FF5Ukelg5BMI watched this on Crunchyroll in original Japanese with subtitles
