Devlog Update: Environmental Overhaul

Welcome to this week’s devlog! This update follows the same format as last week; instead of spoiling storyline additions, I’ll be focusing on the mechanical updates I’ve made to the game. Specifically, this week’s progress centers on a complete Environmental Overhaul.

World Map: Dynamic Day/Night Cycle

The World Map Interface now features a Dynamic Day/Night Cycle! As you can see in the GIF above, the map’s ambiance now shifts according to the time of day. This isn’t just a cosmetic change; traveling at night is significantly more dangerous, increasing the likelihood of negative events and hostile encounters. Players will need to schedule their activities carefully to avoid unfortunate outcomes. You may have also noticed strange red and blue shapes shifting in color and location based on the time-I’ll explain these "Danger Zones" below.

System Integration: From Map to Location

The iron pegs shown on the map are more than just markers; they indicate specific locations that players can select to travel to. These locations receive data from the Global World Control Systems, ensuring that elements like the day/night cycle, weather, and world-altering events remain consistent across scene changes. You can also return to the World Map by pressing the Map icon on the Location Node, but only when you are not in a conversation or engaged in a specific activity.

Hostile Encounters and Danger Zones

As shown in the GIF, you can pick any spot on the map and travel there-but that doesn't always mean you should. Without enough power to break through resistance, some areas are best avoided.

Brigand Raiding Zones (Red Triangles): These areas are occupied by desperate farmers who have turned to banditry. The chance of a wandering encounter increases significantly while traveling through these zones. If you enter a location within a red triangle, you must fight the brigands to make them flee. Doing so turns the zone green and clears the threat for two hours.

Cartel Assembly Zones (Blue Zones): Unlike the disorganized brigands, the Cartel is unionized and controlled. However, they are far from generous to anyone who wanders too close to their meetups.

Both zones shift locations when the date changes. I’ve implemented a two-hour "grace period" (disabled status) immediately following a date change to prevent instant, unfair encounters. In-game lore attributes this brief window of safety to the gangs' migration patterns.

I’ve added several other features as well, but since they fall outside the scope of this environmental update, I’ll be sharing those details over on our Patreon devlogs.
