Hello! As I've picked up work on 1.17 again, I wanted to do a little informal look at what's coming. 1.17 is going to be a bit of a hodge-podge update to tackle bundles, give the log editor a bit of polish, and reimagine how your game stats will work.
Bundles
For bundles, the most obvious thing was to make them browsable.
The bundle relationship data has been populating in the background for a few months now so I'm hoping when 1.17 goes live you'll be able to see what goes where right from the start.
I originally wanted to merge bundles into their parent games, like editions, but I quickly realized that the many-to-many relationship that bundles have, instead of one-to-one like editions, make it really tricky on which game a bundle's data would belong to. So they'll continue to be loggable on their own and stats won't be merged. Maybe there's a way around this but at least for now they'll stay separate.
I did carry over the ability for you to log a game as part of a bundle, like editions. This will show your log as having played the bundle while counting towards the main game. I'm hoping this will at least encourage future logs to be less isolated to bundles alone.
Full Editor Changes
The larger editor is getting some streamlined changes to its UI as I've consolidated some of the rows and will start hiding the play time fields by default. This also has a benefit in that now finish time will be included on this screen when "Add times" is checked.
It didn't make sense to give the log's title the first and most prominent slot when I found less than 2% of users ever changed it. So now you can rename it by right-clicking the tab instead, actually feels more intuitive this way. Replay is now next to the mastered icon, which I feel like might be a little too hidden, so we'll see how that transition goes.
Profile Game Stats
This one started as a simple feature request, but got me thinking more about it could affect the larger site.
Soon your profile will now display a tooltip with a breakdown of games that are usually considered "sub-games", as in they always accompany another game to be played. I've gotten a lot of requests / feedback that people don't want things like DLC, seasons, updates, etc.. to affect their stats since it's kinda unfair to compare one cosmetic DLC with an entire 80-hour game. I see the sentiment around this and I'm trying something new by only adding up "full" games in your profile counter.
So all the games you see in the breakdown tooltip are not being counted in the 395 total. This means everyone's totals will see a drop when this change releases.
What has me questioning it further is, should this be the default experience across the site? As in, should "sub-games" be excluded by default with an option to see them when browsing the games tab or even user libraries? I also want to find a better name then "sub-games". Maybe I'm needlessly changing things to change it but it makes a bit sense to me that the focus is on complete experiences with the added content being optional to see, at least by default.
That's all I got for today! My goal is to get these changes out with 1.17 before March ends, but we all know how deadlines go.MrProg
