Five years ago today Sarah opened the front door to take out the garbage and a little cat ran inside. Everyone knew I wanted to adopt her but we didn't think it was feasible at the time. I had lined up a friend to adopt her and was going to take her to the vet as soon as I could. Anyway, the little pirate girl made her move. The kiddo made the decision by saying "Why not see what happens?". Or was it, "Let's try it out."? It doesn't matter what the exact words were. The cat was inside and it couldn't be helped. I had to text the friend who was going to take her in and explain the situation and apologize.
She was our cat.Well, she was really my cat. Because our cat Nutmeg was not having it. The little cat was trying to be friends but Nutty was not interested. And aggressive about it. So the little girl was sequestered in my studio for a long time, with supervised trips downstairs to try to familiarize the two of them. It never worked, unfortunately. Nutmeg tolerated her being around at times, but never for long and she wouldn't stop being territorial and aggressive. After Nutmeg passed away, the Pirate could freely roam the house and cause trouble. I still miss Nutty. You can see by the photos how happy I was to have Winky. I cried while I first held her in the studio, I was either calming down when I took the pictures of me holding her, or I was in the process of starting to cry from happiness. It's rare when life works out just right (although I had equally good luck in how we adopted Crushy, aka the Orphan, which took months to finally happen). When I took the little cat to the vet on the 20th they asked me what her name was. I said she didn't have an official name yet but they could write down "Pirate Girl" for the time being. I don't remember how long it took before I named her "Winky the Pirate Girl". I was a nervous wreck waiting to pick her up the following day and find out if she was healthy. She got a clean bill of health and it turned out she'd already been spayed after they shaved her.
If I have time I'll find some photos from the 20th. And whenever. She's not the smartest or cleverest cat but she's the best cat I ever had as an adult, no insult meant to Mr. Jinx, Pixel, Mimsy, Crushinto or Nutmeg. I hope she's healthy and with me for a very long time. I love her so much.
