Roaming the back alleys for information was a daily routine for Maomao. However, today felt particularly ominous. In a deserted, dark alley, having followed the scent of herbs, Maomao sensed she had become the prey instead of the hunter.

One by one, vagrants reeking of sweat and stale alcohol emerged from the shadows. Their eyes, glistening with hunger and desire, carried a raw, violent nature far different from the insidious glares she often encountered in the imperial court.

"What's a young girl doing in a place like this?"

With a sinister smirk, one of them reached out and grabbed her shoulder. Under normal circumstances, she would have easily neutralized them with her toxins, but her pockets were empty today, and she was backed into a dead end.

As the suffocating pressure of the men closed in, Maomao faced a dark terror that her intellect couldn't overcome for the first time. As her back hit the cold wall and their beastly, ragged breaths fell upon her disheveled clothes, the 'ugly instinct' she so despised was now on the verge of consuming her.

裏路地を徘徊して情報を集めることは、猫猫にとって日常のようなものでした。しかし、今日に限ってはひどく不吉な予感がします。人影のない暗い路地、薬草の匂いを追って足を踏み入れた場所で、猫猫は自分が狩る側ではなく、獲物になってしまったことを直感しました。

強烈な汗の臭いとすえた酒の臭いを漂わせる浮浪者たちが、一人また一人と影の中から姿を現します。飢えと欲望で爛々と輝く彼らの眼差しには、普段猫猫が目にしてきた宮中の陰湿な視線とは次元の違う、剥き出しの暴力性が宿っていました。

「こんなガキが、こんなところに何の用だ？」

卑猥な笑みを浮かべて近づいてきた彼らの荒っぽい手が、猫猫の肩を掴みます。普段なら毒を使って軽くいなしていたところですが、あいにく今日に限って猫猫の懐は空で、背後は行き止まりでした。

じりじりと狭まってくる男たちの威圧感の中で、猫猫は生まれて初めて、自身の知恵が及ばない暗い恐怖と向き合います。冷たい壁に背中が触れ、乱れた着物の襟元に獣のような荒い息遣いがかかり始めます。彼女があれほど軽蔑していた「醜い本能」が、今まさに猫猫自身を飲み込もうとしていました。
