“The Returned”
The people on the road moved in perfect silence.
Thousands of them.
No footsteps.
No breathing.
Just endless figures walking beneath the pale streetlights of Route 9.
Toward the operations room.
Toward Elias.
Maya backed away slowly.
“This isn’t real.”
Nobody answered her.
Because the thing wearing Daniel stepped closer onto the asphalt.
Its face kept changing.
Daniel.
Then someone else.
Then Daniel again.
Like reality couldn’t decide what it was supposed to look like.
Evelyn raised her revolver steadily.
“Do not listen to anything it says.”
The thing smiled wider.
“You still think bullets matter, Evelyn?”
Elias looked sharply at her.
“You know it?”
Evelyn’s jaw tightened.
“That isn’t your brother.”
The figure tilted its head unnaturally.
“That’s rude.”
Then it looked directly at Elias.
“But she’s right.”
Silence.
Maya whispered:
“…What?”
The thing’s smile faded slowly.
“Daniel Ward died six months after entering Route Zero.”
The words hit Elias like a punch to the chest.
“No.”
“It was painful.”
“Shut up.”
“He screamed for you.”
“SHUT UP!”
Elias took a step forward instinctively.
Evelyn immediately grabbed him.
“Don’t.”
The thing watched carefully.
Interested.
Like a predator testing weak ice.
“The roads kept him alive for a while,” it continued softly. “But eventually everybody becomes part of the network.”
Maya looked sick.
“What are you?”
The thing turned toward her.
For one horrifying second—
its face became hers.
Perfectly identical.
Then it shifted again.
“We are what remains.”
The lights overhead flickered violently.
More figures stepped off the road.
Not all of them were human anymore.
Some dragged twisted limbs behind them.
Some had multiple shadows moving independently.
Others looked perfectly normal—
except their eyes reflected moving highways instead of pupils.
Evelyn slowly stepped backward.
“We need to seal the route.”
“How?!” Maya snapped.
Evelyn pointed toward the far side of the operations room.
A massive steel vault door sat partially hidden behind broken monitors.
“The Anchor Chamber.”
The thing wearing Daniel immediately stopped smiling.
Interesting.
“You built another one?”
Evelyn didn’t answer.
Instead, she grabbed Elias by the shoulder.
“That chamber contains a stabilization core. If we overload it, the route collapses.”
“And what happens to us?”
“We survive.”
“That sounded uncertain.”
“Because it is.”
The figures kept approaching.
The asphalt spread farther across the room.
Concrete cracked loudly beneath it.
Road signs began rising slowly from the floor.
One of them twisted toward Elias.
WELCOME TO ASHVALE
POPULATION: OPEN
Maya stared at the sign.
“…Open?”
Evelyn cursed quietly.
“That’s bad.”
“What does that mean?”
“It means the road hasn’t finished deciding what Ashvale becomes yet.”
That sentence somehow made everything worse.
The thing wearing Daniel stepped fully off the highway.
The moment its foot touched concrete—
the room temperature dropped sharply.
Frost spread across nearby metal surfaces.
Elias noticed something horrifying.
The figure cast no shadow.
Instead—
a road stretched behind it endlessly into darkness.
The thing looked at Elias sadly.
“You really thought he survived?”
Elias clenched his fists.
“You’re lying.”
“I wish I was.”
It reached into its paramedic jacket slowly.
Then pulled out something small.
A silver lighter.
Elias froze instantly.
Daniel’s lighter.
Their father had given it to him years ago.
Elias remembered the exact scratch near the bottom edge.
Because he’d accidentally caused it.
The thing noticed his expression.
“See?”
Its voice softened.
“He wanted you to stay away.”
Elias felt his resolve cracking.
That lighter was real.
There was no way a random creature could know—
The radio on Elias’s belt suddenly screamed with static.
Daniel’s real voice burst through violently.
“DON’T LET IT TOUCH YOU!”
The creature’s entire expression changed instantly.
Anger.
Pure hatred.
The lights exploded overhead.
Darkness swallowed half the room.
The figures on the road stopped walking simultaneously.
Every head slowly turned upward.
Like listening to something far away.
Then came the sound.
A horn.
Deep.
Massive.
Somewhere infinitely far down Route 9.
The Returned reacted immediately.
Fear.
Real fear.
The creature wearing Daniel stepped backward toward the road.
“No…”
Evelyn’s face lost color instantly.
“Oh God.”
Elias looked at her.
“What is that?”
She whispered only one word.
“Collector.”
The horn echoed again.
This time closer.
The road itself trembled violently.
Streetlights flickered red.
The Returned began panicking.
Some ran deeper onto the highway.
Others simply vanished into darkness.
The thing wearing Daniel stared down the road with visible terror.
“It found this route already…”
Then the asphalt split open farther.
A pair of enormous headlights appeared in the distance.
Not a car.
Too high.
Too wide.
The horn blasted again hard enough to shake the entire basement.
Maya covered her ears instantly.
“What IS THAT?!”
Evelyn grabbed them both.
“Move. NOW.”
They sprinted toward the Anchor Chamber.
Behind them—
the highway expanded violently through the operations room.
Concrete shattered apart.
The road wanted more space.
Elias risked one glance backward.
And immediately wished he hadn’t.
Something massive moved between the distant headlights.
Too large to fully comprehend.
Its shape kept changing.
Train.
Truck.
Building.
Something impossible trying to wear familiar forms.
The Returned scattered before it like terrified animals.
The thing wearing Daniel screamed at Elias:
“IF IT SEES YOU, YOU BELONG TO THE ROADS FOREVER!”
Then the headlights suddenly focused directly onto Elias.
The world stopped.
Everything froze.
Sound vanished instantly.
Elias couldn’t move.
Couldn’t breathe.
The massive shape deep within the highway turned toward him slowly.
Watching.
Recognizing him.
Then—
a whisper filled his head.
Not spoken.
Felt.
RETURNED DETECTED
Pain exploded through Elias’s skull.
Images slammed into his mind violently.
Endless highways.
Cities consumed by roads.
Entire oceans split apart by glowing lane markers.
And standing at the center of all of it—
Daniel.
Older.
Broken.
Crying blood beside a massive black intersection stretching infinitely in every direction.
Elias gasped and collapsed hard onto the concrete.
The vision vanished instantly.
Maya grabbed him.
“Elias!”
Blood poured slowly from his nose.
Evelyn yanked open the massive Anchor Chamber vault.
“Inside!”
They stumbled into the chamber.
Evelyn slammed the vault controls.
The steel door began closing slowly.
Too slowly.
Outside—
the headlights were getting closer.
The horn shook the facility again.
Then a giant shadow crossed the vault entrance.
Elias only saw part of it.
An enormous wheel.
Rotating sideways through empty air.
Covered in human hands pressing outward from inside the metal.
Maya screamed.
The vault door slammed shut just as something massive hit the outside.
BOOM.
The entire chamber shook violently.
Dust rained from the ceiling.
Then—
silence.
The chamber lights flickered on dimly.
Elias slowly looked around.
The Anchor Chamber was circular.
Old machinery lined the walls.
And at the center—
a glowing crystal-like structure floated above a steel pedestal.
Road lines moved slowly inside it.
Like trapped highways.
Evelyn breathed heavily.
“That’s the Core.”
Maya stared at it.
“…That thing is keeping the road contained?”
“Barely.”
Another impact shook the vault door.
This time something scratched slowly across the metal outside.
Patient.
Deliberate.
Elias wiped blood from his nose.
“What was that thing?”
Evelyn looked genuinely afraid.
“The Collectors transport lost roads.”
“That explains absolutely nothing.”
She hesitated.
Then:
“When a route fully dies… something comes to harvest what’s left.”
The scratching outside stopped.
Then came a voice through the vault door.
Daniel’s voice.
Soft.
Weak.
“…Eli.”
Elias froze.
No static.
No distortion.
Just Daniel.
“I’m still here.”
Maya looked at him nervously.
Evelyn slowly reached for her revolver again.
And outside the vault—
something began knocking gently.
