THE STATIC ROAD - Chapter 6
DESCRIPTION

“Knocking”

Three knocks echoed against the vault door.

Soft.

Patient.

Human.

“…Eli.”

Daniel’s voice sounded exhausted.

Broken.

Like someone speaking through years of sleeplessness.

Elias stepped toward the vault instinctively.

Evelyn immediately blocked him with one arm.

“No.”

“That’s him.”

“No, it isn’t.”

Another knock.

This time weaker.

“Please…”

Maya looked between them nervously.

“How can you even tell anymore?”

Nobody answered her.

Because nobody could.

The lights inside the Anchor Chamber dimmed slightly.

At the center of the room, the floating Core pulsed brighter.

Road lines twisted inside the crystal structure like living veins.

Elias noticed something strange.

The Core reacted every time Daniel’s voice spoke.

Flaring brighter.

Almost responding.

“…Evelyn.”

She kept her revolver trained on the vault.

“What?”

“The Core recognizes him.”

“That’s not a good sign.”

Outside the door—

a wet cough echoed softly.

Then Daniel whispered:

“I don’t have much time.”

Elias clenched his fists.

“What happened to you?”

Silence.

Then:

“I crossed too far.”

The chamber temperature dropped another few degrees.

Frost crept slowly along the vault walls.

Maya wrapped her arms around herself.

“This place gets worse every minute.”

Daniel continued speaking quietly through the steel door.

“The roads aren’t places.”

Evelyn’s expression darkened immediately.

“Stop talking.”

“You know it’s true.”

“STOP.”

The entire vault trembled violently.

Something enormous moved outside again.

Metal groaned under pressure.

The Collectors were still there.

Waiting.

Daniel’s voice lowered further.

“The roads are alive because they remember.”

Elias frowned.

“What does that mean?”

A pause.

Then:

“They were built from people.”

Silence filled the chamber.

Maya stared blankly.

“…Excuse me?”

Evelyn slowly lowered her head.

Like she already knew.

Elias looked at her sharply.

“You knew?”

“We suspected.”

Daniel laughed weakly beyond the vault.

“You always called them transport systems.”

Another knock echoed.

“But they’re nervous systems.”

The Core pulsed violently.

Images flickered briefly inside the crystal.

Crowded highways.

Accidents.

Cities.

Millions of people moving endlessly across roads.

Elias suddenly understood.

All those years.

All those travelers.

All those disappearances.

The roads had been feeding.

Evelyn finally spoke quietly.

“The first manifestations started in the 1950s.”

Maya looked horrified.

“You mean this has been happening for decades?!”

“Longer.”

Evelyn walked slowly toward the Core.

“The roads grow stronger with movement. More highways. More traffic. More connections.”

Her voice became colder.

“Humanity built the perfect circulatory system.”

Outside—

something scraped slowly across the vault door.

A giant metallic sound.

Like enormous chains dragging across asphalt.

The Collectors were circling.

Daniel whispered again.

“They know Elias crossed.”

Evelyn immediately looked at Elias.

“What exactly happened at Black Pine?”

Elias hesitated.

Then explained everything.

The impossible exit.

The wrecked car.

The creatures.

The road ending in black emptiness.

As he spoke—

Evelyn’s face gradually lost color.

When he finished, she whispered:

“…That shouldn’t exist.”

“What?”

“Black Pine was sealed eleven years ago.”

Silence.

Maya exhaled shakily.

“Okay, I officially miss normal problems.”

Evelyn walked toward an old terminal beside the chamber wall and powered it on.

Ancient monitors flickered weakly to life.

File archives scrolled across the screen.

Then one image appeared.

BLACK PINE INCIDENT — CLASS SEALED

A photograph filled the monitor.

A highway swallowed by darkness.

Emergency vehicles abandoned along the roadside.

And standing near the center—

a teenage boy.

Elias froze.

“…Daniel?”

No.

Not Daniel.

Himself.

At sixteen years old.

Elias stumbled backward.

“What the hell is this?”

The photo timestamp read:

APRIL 17, 2008

Elias stared at it blankly.

“That’s impossible.”

Evelyn looked equally confused.

“You were there.”

“No, I wasn’t.”

“You’re literally in the photo.”

Elias’s breathing became uneven.

He remembered nothing.

Absolutely nothing.

Daniel’s voice came softly through the vault.

“You forgot.”

Elias slowly turned toward the door.

“What?”

“They made you forget.”

Maya frowned.

“Who made him forget?”

No answer came immediately.

Then—

every monitor in the chamber abruptly switched to static.

A loud piercing tone filled the room.

Emergency alarms activated instantly.

ROUTE CASCADE DETECTED

ROUTE CASCADE DETECTED

ROUTE CASCADE DETECTED

Evelyn cursed loudly.

“That’s impossible!”

“What now?!” Maya shouted.

Evelyn rapidly typed commands into the terminal.

New roads began appearing across the digital map.

One after another.

Route 12 — Active

Route 44 — Active

Route 81 — Active

Dozens.

Then hundreds.

Routes all across the country suddenly lighting up simultaneously.

Maya stared at the screen.

“…That’s not normal, is it?”

“No.”

Evelyn looked terrified now.

“This has never happened before.”

The Core pulsed violently.

Cracks spread slowly across its glowing surface.

Daniel’s voice became urgent.

“They’re waking up.”

Something massive slammed into the vault door.

BOOM.

Metal bent inward slightly.

Maya screamed.

Another impact hit immediately after.

BOOM.

Dust rained from the ceiling.

The chamber lights flickered rapidly.

Elias looked toward the vault.

“What happens if that thing gets in?”

Evelyn answered honestly.

“We stop existing.”

Great.

Another impact hit harder than before.

The vault hinges groaned loudly.

Then—

the scratching stopped.

Complete silence followed.

Too complete.

Daniel whispered softly:

“It sees the Core.”

The floating crystal structure suddenly changed color.

From white—

to deep red.

The roads moving inside it became chaotic.

Fast.

Violent.

The chamber floor trembled.

And then the Core spoke.

Not through speakers.

Directly into their heads.

RETURN THE RETURNED

Maya collapsed to one knee instantly, clutching her ears.

Evelyn nearly dropped her revolver.

Elias froze completely.

Because the voice wasn’t mechanical.

It sounded ancient.

Infinite.

Like millions of travelers speaking simultaneously.

RETURN THE RETURNED

Outside—

the Collectors screamed.

The sound shook the entire facility.

The Core cracked further.

And through the growing fractures—

Elias could see roads.

Real roads.

Stretching endlessly inside the crystal.

The chamber lights died completely.

Darkness swallowed the room.

Then a final crack split through the Core.

And a hand reached out from inside it.

Human.

Bleeding.

Alive.

Daniel’s voice whispered from both the vault door—

and the Core itself.

“…Eli.”

The hand slowly opened.

Revealing the silver lighter.
