π Unboxing the Mystery v1.3.0: Roll Checks, Rune Matching & Module Compatibility
Version 1.3.0 adds a dice-check layer to any puzzle, a brand new card-matching mode with stone-carved runes, and native compatibility with Monk's Active Tile Triggers and Item Piles.
π² Roll Check
GMs can now require a dice roll before a puzzle starts. The result shifts the puzzle's difficulty β pass and the puzzle gets easier, fail and it gets harder.
D&D 5e and Pathfinder 2e: pick an ability check, saving throw, or skill from a dropdown. The module calls the system's roll API directly.
Other systems: set up a chat-based trigger. Four detection methods are available β keyword matching, roll-value comparison, roll-specific keyword filtering, and a custom JavaScript formula using roll data.
Success and failure each have their own difficulty multiplier. Lockpick mode also supports adding or removing pins based on the result.
A manual success/failure/cancel button is available on the waiting dialog when automatic detection falls short.
Works with Dice So Nice β the module waits for the 3D dice animation to finish before showing the outcome.
π Rune Matching Mode
A memory card game where players flip cards to find matching pairs. Cards are styled as stone tablets with Elder Futhark runes carved into the surface.
12 rune characters rendered with the Noto Sans Runic font. Each rune has an engraved look with a warm amber glow, sitting on a real stone texture.
Grid size adjusts automatically based on the number of pairs (4 to 12).
An optional memorization phase flips all cards face-up at the start, giving players a few seconds to study the layout.
Card backs, card fronts, and symbols are fully customizable β swap in your own images, emoji, or text.
Set a maximum number of attempts to add pressure. Difficulty also scales the peek time when two cards are revealed.
Full spectator support so the whole table can watch.
π Module Compatibility
Two popular modules now work directly with Unboxing the Mystery.
Monk's Active Tile Triggers: A "Trigger Puzzle" action is registered automatically. GMs can wire puzzle activation into Monk's tile workflows β trigger on token entry, chain it after other actions, etc. When a Monk's trigger is configured, the module's built-in click-to-open is disabled to avoid conflicts.
Item Piles: Containers and loot piles can require solving a puzzle before the loot UI opens. Configure it via the π button on the Token HUD (Item Piles tokens only). All puzzle modes work. After solving, Item Piles opens automatically. GMs can relock via the π button.
ποΈ Tile Highlight Toggle
A new per-tile option hides the yellow hover border while keeping click interaction intact. Useful for tiles that need to blend into the scene without a visible highlight giving them away.
π Bug Fixes
Fixed tile-based puzzles not closing their window when the player fails (e.g., exceeding max attempts in matching mode).
