Quick-witted and eager, zǐ dragons are masters of working smarter, not harder. They face every challenge with a unique perspective, finding opportunity where others see only trouble. Gaining the aid of a zǐ dragon is a sure way to find success, so long as you’re alright with the dragon finding a little more success than you.

Gateway. Any zodiac dragon can recount the tale of their ancestors’ ascension, though the specific details tend to vary with each telling. In the land of beasts, the jade bard Shi Yu Ling played her strings and sang the tale of the Nameless Gate to an audience of enraptured animals at the edge of the world. Any creature that passed through the gate would leave their old life behind and ascend to become a mighty dragon. Her song came at great cost, however, for by singing it, she had revealed the gate’s secret, and exactly one year from the fading of the last note, the doors would close forever. As the melody dissipated, the beasts sprung to action, some jumping straight into the journey while the others connived the best way to reach the gate in time.

First to Cross. While others ran, the rat listened. It memorised every note of the song, took every word to heart, and made a clever plan. Knowing itself to be slower and weaker than the other animals, it offered to sing for them in exchange for a place on their backs. Day after day, the rat travelled, sang, and slept on the grander beasts until all had fallen behind or given up, forcing the rat to walk on its own four legs. The final stretch was a grand river that stood before the gate, and with no way to cross it, the rat found itself stranded and alone. That was, until the ox approached, plodding along the bank determined but lost. Finally seeing a way to succeed, the rat offered to cross the river together so as to guide the ox to their mutual goal. The ox agreed, and the rat leapt from its head at the threshold, crossing the gate to become the first zǐ dragon at last.

Friend to Opportunity. In the generations since the rat ascended, zǐ dragons have continued to prove their quick wit and resourcefulness. They’re excited by interesting problems and pride themselves on their creative solutions. Many go so far as to try to solve the problems of others, especially if there’s something to be gained in the process. Without a novel conundrum to tackle, a zǐ dragon will either move on to a more interesting place or start creating problems of its own to occupy itself. This drive to unravel issues and conflicts finds most zǐ dragons living on the outskirts of large settlements or cities, where interesting puzzles are rampant.----------------------------------------------------
