A chǒu dragon values nothing more than hard work and consistency. While the whirlwind of change whips around them, these majestic creatures remain sturdier than stone. Life flourishes under each of their heavy steps, and tranquility blossoms in their path. While some call them stubborn and inflexible, there’s no arguing with results—once a chǒu dragon sets its will upon a task, it is as good as done.

Second to Cross. Like many others, the ox set out shortly after the bard’s song concluded, maintaining a slow but steady pace. It helped those it passed when it could, but none could keep it from the path it had chosen for long. Many beasts exhausted themselves by running, burning all their energy at once, and the ox led them to water and rest. Others struggled to endure the dull and hopeless road, and the ox kept them company on their journey. Some faltered in their task, unable to overcome the obstacles in their path, and the ox congratulated them for making it as far as they did. Eventually, the old dependable road ran out, and the ox found itself at the edge of a river, lost and alone. As despair began to seep in, the silence was broken by the small voice of the rat, offering guidance, and the helpful ox was helped in turn to reach the gate and become the first chǒu dragon.

Unyielding Focus. Determination has been the legacy of chǒu dragons since the ox’s ascension. Once committed to a task, a chǒu dragon will continue to work at it until it’s complete. Distractions are ignored or, when necessary, removed. Their legendary work ethic rarely changes the world in the same way heroes of myth do, but it creates grand boons for communities of ordinary people: an entire town’s fields plowed in two short days, a new trade route cut through the mountains, a weak and sickly traveller carried home before the onset of winter. Wherever a chǒu dragon works, the land and its people prosper. When a task is complete, the dragon allows itself a brief respite before seeking a new trial to overcome. Finding a chǒu dragon as it prepares to take on a new task is akin to gaining a wish for many—one granted through hard work and dedication.----------------------------------------------------
