“Dragon? No, I wouldn’t know anything about a dragon. My research project is on humanoid behaviour within the upper circles of civil government. Out of curiosity, why do you ask?”
— Ren Zheng, Secret Sì Dragon
Sì dragons are a strange blend of caution and curiosity. They relish wisdom and learning, especially through observation of other creatures, but hate being seen or acknowledged, guarding their privacy with obsessive care. These conflicting drives have led them to devise methods of blending in with mortals by wrapping themselves in layers of deception.
Sixth to Cross. The snake was faster than it looked, and so low to the ground that it escaped the notice of the other beasts. Arriving early to the riverbank, it witnessed many others try and fail to cross. The cat, the fox, the lizard, the frog, the scorpion—all of them were washed away by the current while the snake peered out from the grass. It even watched, wide-eyed in the dark, as the rabbit struggled until it was saved. Day and night the snake waited for the right moment, knowing it couldn’t hope to cross on its own. The thundering of hooves announced the arrival of the horse, and the snake knew its chance had arrived. Silent as the breeze, it slithered up onto the horse’s leg, holding tightly as both plunged into the water. When they finally emerged on the other side, the snake leapt from the horse with elation, crossing the Gate at last to become the first sì dragon.
Cautiously Curious. Sì dragons hold a unique ability among the zodiac dragons: the power to shapeshift into a humanoid form. They use this gift to walk among mortals, involving themselves in mundane affairs far more readily than their kin. These infiltrations are born not from malice, but rather a desire to learn and understand every aspect of existence. In their humanoid guises, sì dragons gravitate towards places of learning and counsel, engaging with scholars, teachers, and advisors, all the while protecting their own identities. Nothing mortifies a sì dragon more than exposure, and those who discover a dragon’s true nature often choose to keep that information to themselves so as not to scare it off.
