As the fastest of the zodiac dragons, wǔ dragons take to their roles as messengers with pride and eagerness. Unlike their more secretive kin, they can frequently be seen zipping across the sky, though catching them in one place long enough to have a conversation is challenging enough that few mortals truly make their acquaintance.

Seventh to Cross. The horse was ecstatic when it heard Yu Ling’s song. It was the first animal to hit the road, leading the charge towards ascension, but its rapid pace wasn’t sustainable for long, and it soon exhausted itself. While it had hoped to be the first to reach the Gate, heroically proving itself worthy to lead the others, the horse recognised its limits and settled for a different type of heroism: helping others along the path. Its back was the seat of many smaller creatures along the trail. It hummed to the rat’s songs, laughed at the monkey’s jokes, let the rooster stand tall over its flock, and speculated with the cat about all they might become as dragons. Few stayed for long, as the horse preferred to travel by daylight while others walked through the night. When it reached the river, it was eager to rejoin all the friends it had made along the road and sprinted boldly across the river, failing to notice the stowaway on its leg. Startled by the snake springing from its ankles, the horse reared back at the last moment in surprise. Though momentarily embarrassed, the first wǔ dragon still smiled as it crossed the threshold, knowing that it had carried yet another unexpected friend to the Gate.

Messengers Above. With their incredible speed, wǔ dragons make excellent couriers. Other zodiac dragons often entrust them with important messages or vital deliveries—a fine arrangement for the wǔ dragons, who prefer to be in constant motion. When not flying at the behest of their kin, they’re eager to aid even mortals in matters of consequence: spreading warnings from a wizard’s watchtower, bearing news of distant wars back to waiting homes, or carrying life-saving supplies to those in desperate need. The greatest wish for many wǔ dragons is to aid mythic heroes in eras of great strife, hoping to one day hear their names mentioned in the folktales and legends whispered around far-off campfires.
