Hi Legends! It's finally here — the Unified Player is out!
After so many months, it's done. I spent whatever time I had after work coding this up, and I'm really happy with how it turned out. It's still a little buggy, but I wanted to get it into your hands as soon as possible rather than gatekeeping it. I figured it'd be faster to hear your thoughts and keep improving in public than to sit here guessing what everyone wants. So here it is — I hope you enjoy it!
Features:
Spectator (non-VR) mode for Windows & Mac
Spectator mode is now the default, with the ability to jump into VR from any page
Switch between experiences from within VR
Hide actors (transparency / "ghost mode" coming in a future update)
Faster animation load times with Full Streaming and Partial Preload modes (Full Preload is still the default)
Experiences now download in the background
Play / pause and rewind (backward and forward)
Quick actions on the controller for play/pause and bidirectional scene switching
Dominant hand setting
Auto-update functionality
Less edge flickering in VR — you can get closer to the actors without that awful flicker
Important: Meta Link might have issues
If you encounter issues with Meta link please let me know. I'll try to address those asap.
Seriously though — I'd recommend Virtual Desktop regardless, since it has image sharpening and colour vibrancy options that look amazing in VR.
Auto-updates & feedback
I've built in auto-updates, so from now on I'll be pushing frequent incremental updates based on your feedback. Please get active in the Discord "Feature Requests" and "Bug Reports" channels — the more feedback I get, the better the player gets for everyone. Don't be shy; let's build something amazing together!
A quick note on streaming modes
Full Preload — loads all actors into RAM. I'd recommend 32 GB of RAM to run everything this way. Some animations may not fit, and you'll get an error if they don't; if that happens, restart the app to clear any floating assets.
Partial Preload (N) — preloads every Nth frame into VRAM and streams the rest from the drive. This one's for drives that are just barely too slow for full streaming.
Full Streaming — plays animations straight from the drive. This is the best option if you have a fast SSD: loading into RAM takes time, so with full streaming you should be able to switch between experiences with minimal delay.
TLDR: fast SSD → use Partial Preload or Full Streaming. 32 GB of RAM and you prefer preloading → Full Preload is there for you.
One more thing
Not all animations are available from the start — I'll be releasing them gradually as I port them over to the new Unified Player.
Anyway, give my new baby a go and let me know what you think! A few things are already on the roadmap — handy scripts, world scale and rotation settings, anchors, and more — but feel free to throw in your own ideas. Enjoy!Download Link: Link
